Class of 2023 DT Sydir Mitchell (NJ) Portal to LSU

Is there any smoke here or is it all just hopeful speculation?

If ERob wants to keep running the same defense, he needs to bring in more and better DL talent. Several times during the season I thought, if he wants to keep his job, he needs to get the right pieces in place.
This and upgrade the run cover safety position. Up the gut 70 yards plus shouldn’t be a consistent thing.

Part of the problem was injuries imo. Not a talent issue.

I should add that in addition to injuries, scheme and tackling were subpar. I don’t know that throwing a big bag at this cat is going to fix it but hey, to each their own!

Injuries were certainly a part of it. We did lose 3 DL for the year. At the very least it impacted depth. That being said, improving the talent at any position is never a bad thing.

He needs to get in shape because he's way too heavy. If he can lose 20-25lbs he'll be cooking.

I don't know -- he's huge, but he's also 6-6. Spreads the weight a little differently than if he was, say, 6-2 at that weight.

I was going off pictures I saw. Maybe he moves well but it looked like he could trim some.

I'm not saying you're WRONG. Defensive tackles are huge, and anyone weighing 340 is a massive, massive human being.

I'm just pointing out that taller people carry the weight a LITTLE differently.

But you might be right about effectiveness [if he could lose 20 pounds]. Not sure, never watched him play.

If you have limited bags, why would you invest it into a run-stuffing dt? I think it would be better spent on premium positions and areas where we have depth challenges like QB, edge, lb?
DT's are a premium position. The bigger a players body needs to be to play at the college level, the smaller the reservoir of talent. The difference between the best SEC/Big 10 teams and the rest of college teams are the size, skill, and depth of the DL's. I want to say it was Lou Holtz, who once said that after watching an opponents game film, he could tell how good an opponent was by watching the DT's

Texas DT Sydir Mitchell plans to enter transfer portal

The big nose tackle from the East Coast, Texas redshirt freshman Sydir Mitchell, reportedly intends to enter the transfer portal this December.

Per On3's Hayes Fawcett, redshirt freshman Texas football defensive tackle Sydir Mitchell plans to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. Mitchell spent two seasons at Texas and has three years of eligibility remaining.

Sydir Mitchell is Texas football's fourth defensive tackle to enter the transfer portal

Mitchell played nine games over the past two seasons at Texas. He registered seven combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and four defensive stops.

The big 6-foot-6 and 350-pound defensive tackle avoided burning his redshirt for his true freshman campaign in 2023 since he only played four games. He saw action in three regular season contests and the Big 12 Championship Game in 2023.
This season, Mitchell took three dozen defensive snaps over five games. Most recently, he took a few defensive snaps for the Longhorns in the SEC Championship Game against the Georgia Bulldogs. He also played in SEC regular season games for the Longhorns against the Kentucky Wildcats and Florida Gators.
He racked up four combined tackles, one tackle for loss, and two defensive stops in the 2024 season.

I say it all the time.

We lost 3 starters
