I was at SU during the McNabb years and thought it was pretty entertaining to see McNabb on the bball team. Just seemed to bring more buzz to both teams. Why doesn't this happen more often? Just logistics?

Why couldn't we go after someone like Ricky Seals-Jones? How well do DM And JB get along, anyway?

Every coach wants the player to focus all of their time and energy on one sport.

Because it takes a very mature athlete to be able to endure the demands of two D1 sports and maintain good academic standing. It wasn't as hard in the old days where the off-season was truly an off-season when the coaches would tell you to go to class and stay out of trouble for the next 8 months. Athletes are expected to participate in year-round programs. Coaches didn't use to get fired for back to back losing seasons like they do now, so they are less likely to entertain the idea of one of their top athletes risking injury in another sport.

Only ones i can remember in my time were Charlie Lockwood, Melvin Tuten and McNabb? Am I missing anyone?

Greg Paulus (grad asst b'ball)

Honestly, I'd rather my star athletes concentrate on one sport. What if McNabb had torn his ACL during hoops practice?

Two of the best dual athletes of the modern era were Art Baker and Jim Nance. Both were outstanding football players. Art won one NCAA heavyweight national championship. Jim won 2. It is unfortunate SU dropped wrestling, or Arthur Jones might have joined them a few years ago.

Vic Hanson and Jim Brown are arguably the top 2 dual athletes in the history of college athletics. Both certainly rank in the top 5 all time (All4SU tells me Jim Thorpe was pretty good too).

There are many on the list of top dual athletes: Bo Jackson, John Elway, Danny Ainge, Deion Sanders, Bill Fralic, Charlie Ward, etc (I know I'm forgetting some). I love the SU guys, but I'm not sure one can make a legit argument that SU should get 2 of the top 5 slots on the all-time list.

Hanson is the only player ever elected to the college football and college basketball hall of fames. Brown is considered by many to be the best football and lacrosse player ever. He was also a very good basketball player and a great track and field athlete, and was actively recruited by the USOC to represent the US in the decathlon while he was at Syracuse.

The other players you mention, with the possible exception of Bo Jackson, are IMHO not in the class of these two. They are a lot more like someone like Sadat-Singh, really good in one sport, good in another.

Thats probably because most people outside of Syracuse have ever heard of Vic Hanson because he did it back in the 20's. But when you really look at stats and reality Hanson is hard to argue with: 3 time All American in football AND basketball. Only player ever named to the Basketball Hall of Fame AND the College Football Hall of Fame. And oh yeah he played in the Yankees farm system for a couple years. Its easy to remmber the media age athletes you mention but that doesn't make them better. I gotta agree with tomcat.

I'm not trying to diminish their accomplishments, by any means, I just think that the overall competition was a lot lower, particularly when Hanson was around, than it has been over the past 30 years when sports specialization has reigned (basketball today is only remotely related to the game back in Hanson's days). To be elite in two sports nowadays is much harder than 55 years ago, which was the last time Jim Brown suited up for SU.

Btw, I still think Jim Brown is the best RB of all-time.

I never saw Hanson or Brown play in person, or even live on TV. In fact, I have never seen film of Hanson play any sport. I have seen film of Brown playing football. No doubt in my mind he would be a dominant player today in the NFL. He was far, far, far ahead of his time. I think we are in at least close to being in agreement on him and his football playing ability. Regarding lacrosse, I can only go by with people like Dick Schapp and Roy Simmons have said (he is the best player ever). I will go with their opinion on that.

I have seen all the players you mentioned play.

Ainge averaged 11.5 ppg in the NBA. I think he was even all pro one season. He was a good basketball player, but nothing special. Never even the best player on his own team. He was a borderline major league baseball player. I saw him try to play in Syracuse with the Chiefs. He was slow, awkward, clumsy and crappy. Was a 0 tool player. Lifetime batting average of .220. 2 home runs. I can't imagine you are serious trying to argue he was a better athlete than Jim Brown. Seriously? Danny Ainge? Seriously?

Sanders was a great cornerback. Outstanding in coverage, dinged hard for being a poor tackler and not being physical, but he had undeniable fantastic athletic ability for football. Loses some points because he was just a CB, not as important a position as RB. I say he was close to but not as dominant a football player as Jim Brown.

He was a good baseball player, certainly much better than Ainge was, but was never remotely a great one. Lifetime average of .263 with 39 HRs and 186 SBs. Forget that he was not remotely close to the best baseball player of all time. If he was a hall of fame baseball player, I might agree with you.

Don't have time to go through the others (Fralic an all time great two sport athlete because he acted in a few pro wrestling acting events). Let's agree to disagree.
