They don't need to tie up the team's progress for another aging player who is already showing signs of decline. Use his money demands for building up the team. Getting rid of Stewart is a good move. Make more . Dump Wells and other deadwood on the roster. The NY Yankees will be just fine without Robinson Cano. Start the process now. Tell him to get lost and sign with Seattle. Keep the payroll fluid and dynamic rather than locked up with no room for change.

I haven't seen signs that Cano is in decline, but then again, you see a different game. He's a durable and elite offensive and defensive player with perhaps four more years of high level performance in him. You pay the man for 7 years and hope for the best on the end of the contract.

As far as your last statement, we're taking about the Yankees and a sport with no salary cap, so there is always room for change, regardless of their payroll.

Cano has already backed down from his $310 million demands.

Now looking for a 9 year deal @ $250 mil.

Yanks up to 7 years @ $170 mil.

They'll keep dancing until the music stops.

Show me his decline, show me where he has shown signs of it. Also fill us in on his replacement...oh wait he is the best 2nd baseman in the game, so you cant.

Oh god..no. If Ellsbury warrants 7 years, how the hell do you expect Cano to settle for 8 even?
