Dungey - Productivity

You're assuming nothing but upside and no downside. IF he can keep playing like that, great. More like than not his performance will fall back instead of improve from that.

Doesn't solve the macro problems of not running enough plays, doing better on third down, and the yards the defense has given up.

As pointed out in that other thread I wasn't trying to predict future state, I was pointing out that if there wasn't significant improvement more than 5 wins was not likely. I never said improvement couldn't or wouldn't happen.

It's hasn't taken me 5 days, I put that disclaimer in the original post. When you are ever right about any of this stuff let me know.

Wrong again, Go--I'm not assuming anything of the sort. I suggest as much a couple of posts above. The macro problems you keep clinging to will all solved by having this kid under center full time, with a full compliment of weapons at his disposal. Moving the ball better and retaining possession more will also reduce the amount of time the defense is on the field.

For the record, I'm letting you know now that I was right about Dungey, and his impact on our offensive production. You're welcome.

Feel free to also thank CIL, Chip, Rocco, and numerous others who pointed this out to you respectfully on Friday, while you were too busy having a temper tantrum about anyone having the audicity to politely disagree with one of your precious posts to notice.

Agreed. We'll be playing some tough defenses, and Dungey [like all frosh] will struggle at times. But his capabilities are exponentially greater than anybody we've had post-McNabb. Sometimes in tough games, a big play or two can be enough to swing the outcome. Dungey is capable of making those type of plays.
My eyes tell me he has the physical tools to be a good one, plus he looks like a natural playmaker fully capable of improvising even at this early stage in his career. That's a nice package.

Great analysis. This is why I love Lester's approach to finding smart kids to run his offense. Dungey doesn't make any glaring mistakes and even on the busted plays, he picks up 1st downs (ie. that pass to Moore in the Wake game when Lester called a completely different play). He can adapt super quickly to what is around him and can also pick up positive yards with his feet.

I cannot wait to watch him play this weekend. The kid is a stud, no doubt.
If you haven't taken a look at the tape on Lindsay Scott (the QB) that just verballed from Louisiana, you should. I don't know why no one else (8 offers - no P5) was looking at this kid. He fits the new offense perfectly. Just shows that Lester knows what he wants. Reminds me of Boeheim, he finds kids that fit his particular game system.

I just want to go on record that Dungey has been an encouraging find on a lot of different levels, but he'll have a hiccup at some point, and that's totally OK and normal and something he can learn from and not something we need to freak out about.

I'm not going to back this up with any statistical analysis or breakdowns. This is just my baseline opinion on Eric Dungey.

The kid is going to be special. And it's a combination of a couple factors. The majority of those factors are driven by Eric, but some are because of the guidance and coaching he's receiving as well.

I'll say this one more time, enjoy the ride Syracuse.

What assumptions about the future.

You gave all the stats and then said if these things don't improve we'll be in trouble. The way you presented it and then responded to people afterwards (heads in the sand) gave us clues as to what you thought would happen.

In this thread you presented the stats and said the kid has been unbelievable.

Hence the positive response.

I was truly impressed by Dungey. He looked to me like the best first year QB SU has had since I started watching SU football in the 1960's.

His field awareness, his vision and his timing (on the pitches) have been tremendous.

That being said, a little voice keeps telling me, "He just can't be that good". Now he may end up the best SU QB ever. But the probability is that he's going to come back down to earth.

"The Sunshine Boys" or "The Sunshine Club" or "Rays of Sunshine" or...like...something to do with, I'm thinking, Sunshine?

"The Sunshine Boys: We suffer from excessive bouts of ED!"
Sorry Jek...not your best work...:)

Nobody in the last twenty years has gotten me more interested in watching our program more than Eric Dungey.

Having said that, I have to acknowledge that the guy is a young player who has only played in three games - less than three games - and who will have to mature a great deal to become a great college player.

So, I at least have to temper my enthusiasm for this very impressive young man.

That philosophy is eventually going to lead to my wife divorcing me for continuing to be annoying at every opportunity.
I've lasted over 3 decades of making horrible jokes for the sake of making horrible jokes.

(funny how there is less responses complaining about sample size when we like the results)
Given the situation and that we're all armchair quarterbacks at heart, I myself am going to continue to exercise cautious optimism on Dungey. We haven't yet seen how he responds to an "off" day, nor how he responds when the team is backed into a corner. The next 4 weeks should tell us a lot.

"Backed into a corner"...maybe not to a big extent, but remember, we were down 17-13 against Wake at halftime and he brought us out and made some huge plays to get us that win.

Agreed, but the sample size is too small to reasonably think that he can do that most times. Like I said, cautiously optimistic still. If this sample size holds true the rest of the season, I'll be on the Dungey for Heisman train the next 2-3 season. Lol.

Eric has had 22 full drives this year. Doesn't count when he came in for Hunt or end of half kneel downs.

Of those 22, 7 TD's, 5 FG's, 1 missed FG attempts. 60% of drives ended with scores or at least with a scoring attempt. 900 total yards on those 22 possessions.

Of 9 drives that ended in punts, 6 were three and out and 3 were after at least one first down.

Of 22 drives only 7 ended in SU territory, you add that efficiency with Dixon and SU is going to win the FP battle every game.

Not one negative drive, not one turnover, and only three started in plus territory.

For a true freshmen QB, and coming off of how bad the offense was last year, that's unreal.
Great post. If you extrapolate the potential numbers for Dungey for this next weekend, I think you'd be looking at four scores, two td's and two field goals. This year has a bit of an anomaly for SU with big plays by offense, defense, & special teams. One reason I'm feeling good about the game against USF is that it's not all on Dungey though he's been making his share of plays. The general approach by the coaching staff has been to be aggressive in all areas, to keep getting turnovers, gain yardage on the changes of possession, and getting a score by the defense or special teams in every game. . SU is a decent team because they don't rely on a single set of playmakers. SU's lowest point production so far is 24 against LSU with 24, 30, 30, and 47 in all games. USF has scored less than 17 points in their three most competitive games going 14, 17, 17, and 51. I think those numbers bode well for us. SU fans should represent well so there won't be a significant home field advantage. Their qb's have thrown 5 interceptions. SU has a +6 turnover margin and USF is turnover neutral. SU special teams should have a good day against USF as they've not been good on kickoff coverage. There are lots of opportunities for all parts of the team to contribute.

It's not about the size of the sample it's about how meaningful the data is. But since he excluded the drives that he did, it was more meaningful than, say, 4 games of data that included 50% of throwaway data.

I think he's the real deal as an OC, but I also think it helps that he seems to have found a legitimate QB in Dungey.
Remember, Lester was also the one who found and recruited Dungey.

Bad jokes are what God made kids for. Leave the wife alone. Unless, of course, you don't have kids.
