Euro 2020

This Czech- Denmark math has such an odd flow. Very little opposition/energy from either side in stopping the other getting chances in the final third.
Playing in the 90 degree, high temps will so that to a team. Not to mention both the teams had ridiculous travel schedules.

This whole concept of having the games in a bunch of cities makes no sense, especially when you consider that 3 out of 4 semi finalists played all of their group stage matches in their home countries. England will have only played 1 match outside of Wembley. Who the heck decided Baku would be a good place to stage matches?

Temps were low 80s but humidity was high. Baku being a site is curious at minimum.

It’s a horrible format that I never want to see again. There was a graphic about the distance travelled between Ukraine and England and it was an insane difference. I just feel like it’s a huge issue when it comes to fatigue in the late stages of the tournament. Specifically, with teams that don’t have as much depth as the top teams... Denmark today even looked extremely tired and they had games in Copenhagen.

next up... Qatar!!! A country well known for human rights and decency.....

Its also openly recognized that Qatar bribed FIFA officials in smaller countries to get the World Cup away from the US. It’s still not clear to me now having a tournament in the middle of the club season is supposed to work.

It will likely have detrimental effects on league play for several years. At the very least leagues are going to have to start a month earlier and play a month later than normal in order to fit in the 6 weeks required for World Cup in December and January. Add in other cup competitions around the world and players will be maxed out physically with little time for recovery between seasons.

That looked like a hand ball. Clear as day.

Edit: It was, but good no call judging by the replay. Happened so fast in real time, the official made the right call on the spot. Not an easy job.

My only problem with watching Euro Soccer has always been all the flopping. Watched too much Serie A with my Mother when she was alive.
I saw a guy from Spain fall like he got shot and no one was within 5 yards of him.

Clinical by Italy. ET was some of the most boring of any of the ETs in this tourney but Italy new they had them if it went to PKs it seems. I was really surprised this even went to ET.

Well a nice win by Italy. Harsh for Spain. But I say again, if England handles Denmark at home tmrw they get Italy again at... home... really fair...

Eh… Spain, Italy, and France have all won the Euros on their own turf. It happens.

Just did a deep dive… European Championship hosts are 3-2 in the final.

Portugal and France lost the final at home (‘04 and ‘16, respectively).

Wow. Spinizolla. I feel like crying too

There goes a big move. He was one of the stars of the tournament before snapping his achilles. That's rough.

It won't. Africa Cup years is always hard on European pro leagues, where the best players can miss about 5 weeks in January and February, the real dog days of the season. This is going to be like that, but with 3 times as many players gone. They have no choice but to suspend operations, plus probably 10 days afterwards for the ones who reach the semifinals or finals.

That will make 3 years in a row that the powers that be in soccer change the schedule on the players, wrecking normal summer recovery because they will be compressing the schedule again.

Yes but in a “neutral” tournament it sure has seemed they might as well remove that neutral tag.

Would be fine with it if the host was actually declared as England. Which is something they really need to do again. Not this 10293848 cities but England semi/finals during COVID thing. Guess they couldn’t have predicted that but still.

Yeah, I agree.

Oddly enough I feel England do better away from home. Although I have nothing statistically to back that up.

It's looking like England is going to finally end their inferiority complex about 1966 being their only major tournament victory.

Italy did not look as good without Spinazzola against Spain; in fact were lucky to get through via penalties. Prior to his injury, I think they would have won the tournament. They still might, but to me, it would signify a choke job by the English.

England still has to get past the Danish feel good story first. The Danes are playing really good football right now as well.

Idk. Emerson looked good to me in the limited time Italy was able to gain possession. He hit the crossbar on one run and had several nice combinations with Insigne before he was subbed for defensive reasons. Veratti and Barella were both “off” today being forced to chase Spain around the middle of the pitch. I thought Mancini may have waited about 10 minutes too long to replace them with Pessina and Locatelli. Immobile looks totally lost at this point but the replacement options are limited so I guess you roll the dice and send him out there. I was a little surprised Moise Kean was dropped from the squad before the tournament. I think he might have been a difference maker in this game and the game against Austria. Both goals scored today were magnificent. Felt bad for Morata on the pk miss. Del Piero mentioned that all of Spain’s games in this tournament went to OT which is pretty amazing given the amount of possession they had. Final should be wide open and fun game to watch. Home field advantage to England if they make it. Denmark and Italy both playing on the emotion of losing Eriksen and Spinazolla. Italy seems like a team of destiny. As Del Piero said they find a way to win and have been a little lucky as well.
