Expectations in Year 1

I think anything short of an NCAA tournament team is going to be viewed as a failure by a lot of fans. Because of how the end of JBs career went and that Red didn’t work out at all, the margin for error here is incredibly small. It’s on the school for putting themselves in that situation due to previous decisions - but GMac has to deal with that situation.
Uconn has 9 to 12 million maybe a scotch more. Duke up to 14 million so if SU has 11 or we should be able to compete for talent. That said, consider this, you are a top 10 portal player. Duke, UCONN and SU all offer you a very similar deal. Do you go with rookie head coach with a team that hast not been to the tourney in years or one of the teams we just saw play tonight.

Having a good exciting well coached team that improves through the year and that I want to watch instead of turning to watch Siena games like I have for the last two seasons. Making the NCAAT the first year is not essential to me but showing the promise of getting there by year two is.

I would agree with this but if the nil is as good as I’ve heard we need to make the tourney

Now that we have the NIL money and the coaches, we should be able to compete at the highest level.

What is the expectation for next season? 25 wins? 22 wins?
The orange standard is about 19-12. However, if you look at the shot chart from the Duke/sienna game, McNamara is playing in the analytics clearly. Can Gerry get Cuse back to the old standard? There is little patience if he does not, but he appears to be the right hire.

Probably a 8-9 seed and then have to play UCONN in the second round game. At least it shouldn’t have to be on their home court. 😆

Your point about UConn/Duke/Syracuse is why making the NCAA tournament in year one is vital. It won’t be easier for a second year coach of a non-tourney team to recruit compared to being a first year coach. It’s been a decade since Syracuse has been relevant -kids being recruited today do not see Syracuse as a basketball power. If Syracuse doesn’t make the tourney in year one, it just tells those kids Syracuse still doesn’t matter.

Improvement over what we have seen the last couple of years.

That is it.

Hopefully, GMAC can coach.

And, hopefully, we have enough NIL to put together a solid roster.

Way too much talk on here of 'We have plenty of money" before November and 'We don't have nearly enough" in February.

Literally gotten to the point where I believe nothing that I read on here and wait to see what actually materializes.

Making the tourney as a P4 program is going to get easier and easier the next few years. The deck is being stacked more than ever.

Next year the tourney is going to be 76 teams too. The ACC at minimum should be a 9 bid league.

Being in the botton half of the ACC is not really negotiable anyway but that would mean we lose to the West coast teams, Wake, VT, the Florida teams, ND. Given how the NCSt and UNC coaching searches are trending too they may be fighting for the bubble instead of the top of the ACC next year.

Everyone is entitled to their expectations, but I can't picture how a "good exciting well coached team that improves through the year" doesn't make the tournament. Especially with $12 million invested in its roster.

Not making the tourney means, at best, a 20-13 type year with almost no Quad 1 wins. That doesn't seem good or exciting to me, but I guess YMMV.

Syracuse has to make the NCAA tournament, and not the play in game.
That is the bare minimum expectation EVERY year, and now especially true with new coach GMAC.

This.

NCAAT. No play-in game.

I can't imagine GMac wouldn't minimally have the same expectations.

If we truly did a national search and GMac won out and we are even remotely within the rumored money we'll have, this should be the bare minimum.

I'll note again that this year 38 Power Five teams made the tourney between at large and auto qualifier bids. That means 49% of Power 5 teams made the tourney. If the field is expanded to 76 next year then it's likely that ~55% of Power 5 teams will make the tourney.

I think people need to take this math into account when setting their expectations. It's likely that it'll be more difficult to NOT make the tourney next year than make it for P5 teams.
