Expectations in Year 1

Obviously making the tourney is of paramount importance, but another thing that is extremely important to me is to STOP GETTING BLOWN OUT. It's humiliating how many times under Red I literally would turn the game off mid-second half because it wasn't worth watching anymore. I obviously don't expect to win every game, but I do expect to at least compete in every game.

This past season, it always felt like the minute the lead got to like 8-10 points, we would suddenly be down 20 in the blink of an eye and just gave up.
I'm thinking the blow out thing is unique to Red's coaching, but yes, definitely a huge red flag if it continues.

Initial accomplishments for me:
  1. a disciplined, hardworking, defensively tenacious, intelligent, prideful and balanced team
  2. a HC will an adaptful in game stategy
  3. more fannies in the dome - bringing back the LOUD HOUSE
  4. a 20+ win season
  5. a >0.500 record on the road
  6. winning games on primetime venues
  7. a top 5-10 finish in the ACC
  8. quarter to semifnal placement/finish in the ACC tourney at a minimum
  9. a 10-16th seed in the NCAA
  10. return to national relevance
Afterwards we can debate success, since that is always winning the NT - but I expect GMAC to evolve to create a successful SU BBall foundation. Who knows, maybe but more hopefully he'll pass JB in NTs

The coaching staff, Euro guy, and Sadiq coming back have my expectations trending up. Gotta wait until the roster fills out to predict anything, but it's been a good few days.

144% THIS.

I’ll happily admit that I was 1,444% on team Outside Hire for this HC search.

And that it very much seemed like we had to “settle” for GMac,
after whiffing on our top 2 options.

Gerry has CRUSHED IT (so far) with filling out his staff, and the portal & retention to date.

He absolutely must land an impact PG and C from the portal now.

I’m all aboard the Scranton Express.
We *have* to be.
Cannot even imagine if this doesn’t pan out, so only gonna envision success.

Crushed it still feels over the top. With how crazy this place went when he was announced, I’d argue that so far he has met expectations. If he gets the kid from BYU and a high level center, then we can say he crushed it.

I do worry that we always say we crush the offseason, we say we got good dudes, etc. Yet year after year we do not have a field general on the court and we get worse as the season goes then our gameplans are easily scouted and exposed by other coaches. Our highest paid players continue to be soft and when they meet a little bit of adversity midseason they just dial it in. Expectations for me are:

-GMac brings in leaders and puts people in their roles. Through the season he shortens the lineup and the best 7 guys play. For real this time.

-GMac teams finally gets better as the season goes on. We should be playing our best hoops in March not in November. He showed that at Siena which likely won him the job.

-Tourney year one is not negotiable especially with expansion. ACC will be a 9 bid league, Cuse cannot be missing the tourney because we can't finish in the top half of the ACC.

I'd argue he's done the bare minimum so far. He brought in the expected Siena kids, retained a few SU players, and got a highly regarded (but unproven) Euro. MMM is the only surprise so far.

The coaching staff HAD to include new blood from outside the SU tree. I'm happy that he did that, but again it was almost required.

To say he's "crushing it" would require proven starters coming in at the PG and C positions as well as two or three other high upside guys.

Ahhh, Bnoro, you rui... never mind.

It's a day ending in a y.
You do you!!

Not sure why everybody seems to be missing the SO FAR part.
We were very unlikely to land a premier PG or C in the first few days of the portal being open.
So if that was your expectation...

Seems like a 'you' problem.

I was just trying to say that, given I was very skeptical going into the McNamERA,
that SO FAR I'm very pleased with how it has played out.
YMMV.

But how exactly do you see him “crushing it”? What has he done that you haven’t expected, other than signing MMM. I’m not, by any means, saying he's been a disappointment. But I also wouldn’t describe doing what most people anticipated to be crushing it.

So by your standards he has not yet failed his probationary period of the off season. Fair enough;)

He’s working down the checklist of our expectations. When he completes the list and starts in on the stuff none of us saw coming, I’ll give him Exceeds Expectations on his quarterly review.

The only he’s crushing it part in my opinion is the monetary increases that he brought in over some other candidates.

Not like we get an expense report to see where that money is spent though.

When the roster is set and we actually see what the extra millions were spent on then maybe more judgements on the offseason go be made
