Is it too early? Deion got me thinking

I think we need to temper our expectations for 2025. A much harder schedule. An unknown quarterback. An offensive line that is improving but "not there" yet.I think you need to see how this upcoming season is going.
Yes its a tough schedule but we should be able to see some progress on the field.
If we are punching above our weight class come early to mid October, you sign him to an extension IMO with a pretty sizeable buyout.
We probably would give him three years from this season to correct anything so having a large buyout is not the worst thing in the world. A bit different than the Dino situation.
He who doesn't learn from the past...I have seen more than enough- extend him until he meets his maker or the world ends, whichever is longer.

There are enormous differences between Fran and Dino that are obvious to anyone paying attention.Exactly. How many were all over to extend Dino so fast. Have to see how it is without a experienced proven QB.

At the time, we all wanted to give Dino the keys to the city. Hindsite is 20/20There are enormous differences between Fran and Dino that are obvious to anyone paying attention.
It's all about the buyout, in two ways.
1) I haven't seen it reported what another suitor would have to pay to poach Deion. If it's not a lot, it's just a raise but doesn't ensure security. That's a key component.
2) We got stuck with Dino for too long because his extension after the 2018 season made it hard to buy him out. Need to make that reasonable or see results long-term enough to not have to fear a one-year wonder.
Dino never wanted to and was never going to make Syracuse his home. Dino wanted to go back West badly. He never invested in the community beyond the minimum. He was always out of here the minute the opportunity arrived. Fran on the other hand is from here. He has roots a few hours away. He is much younger and has a young family. He is invested here and in one year has done more in the community that Dino did during his entire run. I along with many on this board wanted Dino for life. He did great things in resurrecting our program and was by all accounts a very good man. He checked so many boxes other than the one that truly matters. He didn't and was never going to make Syracuse his home. That cannot be overcome. Fran as stated is the polar opposite. I believe that as long as he is supported by the community, he is all Syracuse. He doesn't want to leave. For him to leave would be very difficult. So, he checks the most important box for himself and his family. I hope that the administration realizes this and I hope that prior to whatever year JW decides to retire Fran is provided with a very long-term deal.At the time, we all wanted to give Dino the keys to the city. Not sure Fran would lock in for that long a term at only 4 million a year.If you cannot afford the buyout, you cannot offer the contract. That goes for every program.
Too many schools are stuck in these contracts. If a good HC wants to leave, your buyout won't keep him here. If another program really wants a HC, the buyout will not keep him here. The contracts do not protect the school, they protect the HC.
We need to reward good HCs with higher pay but at the same time protect the school. That is respecting the HC without hamstringing the program. If that means paying $1M more than you should short term to protect yourself long term, so be it. That is the situation we are in. So when the time comes, I rather offer Fran a $5M three year contract than a $4M six year contract.
Dino was at $4.5 million per when he got fired. Would assume Fran, as a bit of an outside-the-box hire, started at $3.5 million. If he’s here in 5 years and is winning consistently, he’ll be at $10 million minimum. Not sure Fran would lock in for that long a term at only 4 million a year.
That's probably true to an extent. But it was still only one (wonderful) season with a generational talent for our standards at QB. We need more of a sample size. It's just basic due diligence. There are enormous differences between Fran and Dino that are obvious to anyone paying attention.
All the planets aligned last season. So much that maybe even Red could’ve coached the team to a winning season. That's probably true to an extent. Which is why I’m perplexed that we didn’t - or couldn’t - bring in more portal help to shore up immediate needs on defense, like at linebacker. I agree that you don’t want an over reliance on transfers, but the roster is still not built up to where it can survive without bandaids. If anything I would think they’d overspend bringing in some star talent on D realizing the offense is going to come back to earth.Too soon.
Lost in the afterglow of 10 wins and the best passer in SU history was the fact that our defense ranked 12th in the ACC and special teams? No need to go there, right?
At the end of the day, it is true that it’s the wins that count and it doesn’t matter how you get there. If one unit more than offsets deficiencies elsewhere, it all works out just fine. Still, I want to see how Fran does in a year where he has to address those deficiencies while trying to keep the offense humming without McCord.
