In case this gets missed from the other thread...

I was told the number Syracuse offered Frost was actually around $1.8-$2.0 million in base salary. Issue wasn’t money it was years. Frost wanted a 2 year contract, Syracuse wanted a 5 year contract. That was the impasse. Syracuse would not go to 2 years.

Which is kinda what we already knew this morning. Just like with the Ash "news" this entire day has been overreacting...and me not getting any work done but hitting refresh all day.

Just need a hire for a sense of finality so we can all direct our attention in an established direction.

If this extends until the weekend, it's going to be a long week.

The only surprise to me is that people don't know that that money plus whatever incentives is about what a first year HC should get.

Not really my point. SU will keep the compensation low - lower than most of the other D1 programs with openings - because that is the way they have always done it.

Some of these other jobs are inherently more attractive than the SU job so it just may be necessary for SU to whip out the checkbook. I don't see that happening.

Why is it that SU has to limit itself to first time unproven HCs?

Irrelevant.

The question was whether we were paying market value for the candidate in question.

Iowa State paid a proven HC 2m. We offered an unproven OC 1.8-2.

I wasn't responding to that question. I was offering my own observations after following SU football for a very long time. Any time there has been an opening they're looking for the cheap way out.

I've seen a lot of different #s floated around. Not sure what to believe particularly just because it's been stated on the internet. . I'm going by SU's historical track record. If they offered Frost $8-10 mil over five years then that would be a departure from past protocol.

I'd trust the 1.8-2 number at 5 years

It's really not

Like I said that would be a departure. Since SU hired Frank Maloney in 1973 they have ALWAYS looked to hire assistants. Every single time. Obviously they've had some hits and misses with that approach. But they've never hired a proven HC. I believe the biggest reason for that is the unwillingness to pay big $$$.

I'd be more inclined to believe the initial reports in the press but I admit I certainly don't know. Not sure anyone else here does either.

Can you provide some examples of where SU offered anybody $8-10 mil over five years?

Well, we offered a couple candidates some years ago $2 mil a year, so even at four years that gets to 8 without the extra year.

We also offered frost $1.8 for five minimum, which I'd guess was higher per year after the first and second.

Jekelish has contacts that are very reliable as does Mike M - and both corroborated the larger number as well as Frost asking for 2 years.

Which initial reports are you referring to? The ones that just came out tonight, out the ones being discussed yesterday?

They offered 2 experienced HCs $10m over 5 years. Edsall and Holtz.

Herman, Frost, and others would seem to dictate otherwise.

Huh?

Hermans first year was $1.5m. And we just offered Frost $1.8-2.0m

Why post something like that? Facts are irrelevant. Let's just complain, complain, complain. I swear if he couldn't complain orangeinjersey wouldn't even post on this forum.

I guess it's just a coincidence that in nearly a half century SU has never hired anybody other than an assistant coach.

Btw can you provide some proof of those $10 million offers to Edsall and Holtz?

This offseason there have been 3 high profile proven successful coaches that have circulated in the rumor mill as being candidates for P5 jobs- Campbell, Ruhle and Fuente. Do you get the feeling that SU ever considered any of those three?

Statements posted on the internet based on "what I was told" are now facts?

Then that would mean that both took less money to go elsewhere- Edsall as a former alum going to MD and Holtz going to USF.

Where is the hypocrisy? Has SU ever stated they are committed to spending big money to build and sustain a Top 25 football team?

Hypocrisy is in that they fire HCSS expecting him to win with second rate, no third rate monies to improve the program. Anyone think that just maybe HCSS hired all his friends because no one else was willing to take such a low pay grade.

You think the PS report was based on anything other than what they were "told"? Nice try though.

I would be skeptical in either case.
