FBI arrests Assistant Basketball Coaches in Corruption Scheme

It's greed, plain and simple.

If they're paying $100k under the table, then they would have to pay 5-10x that above the table. There's a reason the schools and the NCAA collude to avoid paying players. More money for the schools and NCAA.

Edit: This was a reply to General20

Why would schools care if these kids have to pay taxes on the money they earn?

This is a huge story. Heading to Card Chronicle now for their take ...

First comment: "I'll look back on the years we had a basketball team fondly.
We are absolutely getting shut down for this. 100k bribe for a recruit while on probation for hookers.

Bravo Pitino. You slimy egomaniac dumbass"
I'm going to miss Louisville. They actually have good, seemingly knowledgeable fans.

Pacino is already playing Joe Paterno. He can only play one scumbag coach at a time.

On a related note, Pacino, Paterno, Pitino sounds like a carting company.

This is one of the finest posts I've ever laid eyes on.

Not worried about Syracuse.
All of our assistants have been alumni and JB has stayed out of agents stuff.

Lydon had an agent before JB knew.

JB is a pro wiTh stuff like this he wouldn't steer his players to any agency.

This is going to be schools with shady AAU connections and if it's HOF coaches I would guess world wide Wes and Calipari are involved.

I'd think Pitino is the HOF coach involved?

If Kentucky isn't named initially then they're only going to get in trouble when people start rat-ing everybody out to get a deal.

Wasn't referring to taxes. I was talking about market value.

If Player A is worth $100k under the table, then he is worth $500k-$1M in the open market.

We know the Miami coaches flew in on a Jet, but did they also leave on that jet or was that a leave behind?
They blew their recruiting budget already. Had to resort to collages.

Interested to see what comes from this...

My take away from all this . . . people are going to get arrested, athletic programs decimated, people are going to lose their jobs, and fans are going to be upset . . . and the crazy thing is that nobody actually did anything wrong! These kids deserve to be paid for the money they generate and the schools want to pay them.

The real "crime" here is that all the high major D1 schools just can't agree to come together, separate from the NCAA (and all the smaller schools) and come up with a set of rules everybody can agree on and follow. If they just do that, everything will be above board and everybody will be happy (and rich). If not, each and every school runs the risk of being taken down, and which school it happens to is nothing more than luck of the draw.
amen

To be fair, the NCAA doesn't have 1% of the investigative tools that the FBI does. The NCAA is not going in with surveillance and undercover agents. Nor do they have subpoena power or a bevy of other legal tools. As far as I know, the NCAA can interview (willing) witnesses and request documents and that's about it.

Right, they were too busy running a 10 year investigation of Syracuse and found what essentially amounts to nothing compared to this.

Please don't be Syracuse please don't be Syracuse please don't be Syracuse please don't be Syracuse

That said... how did they figure this stuff out? Seriously... this stuff always fascinates me.

If dasher is correct and Kansas may be the other school, Bill Self was inducted to the Basketball HOF in 2017. That would make "HOF coaches" from bees post plural.

Was Adidas a possible player in our pending apparel negotiations?

Yeah I don't think people should just take the list right now as a be all and end all. With the FBI involved and leading this and not the NCAA, there will be further schools as people take deals to save their own asses. This is going to get really, really ugly.

It describes the one university as a private research university in Florida with the same number of undergrads and grad students as Miami. They're involved and dirty. Both coaches should be resigning by end of day. This stuff is all on tape.

How?
