FBI arrests Assistant Basketball Coaches in Corruption Scheme

None of this is the least bit surprising. The only surprise is that there’s not more schools and Kentucky isn’t one of them.

This isn't a laundry list of schools that cheat in recruiting. This is simply the ones that are currently implicated in violating federal criminal statutes as a result of actions taken in furtherance of the cheating.

The allegations of cheating that come out of the criminal prosecutions will likely be staggering, but the FBI isnt charged with enforcing NCAA rules, just federal law.

To be fair, the NCAA doesn't have 1% of the investigative tools that the FBI does. The NCAA is not going in with surveillance and undercover agents. Nor do they have subpoena power or a bevy of other legal tools. As far as I know, the NCAA can interview (willing) witnesses and request documents and that's about it.

I understand this 100%, but the NCAA sets the standards of operation for their sports and develops the environment that allows stuff like this to go on. I know they don't have the investigative tools for this sort of operation but there has to be something between "we're gonna hammer Kent State", and "we're gonna turn a blind eye to what's going on at 'Zona, Kentucky, etc".

SOP for the FBI is to offer deals for any information that would implicate other individuals, or in this case schools. Put on some popcorn and enjoy the show. I can't believe that someone won't sing like a canary and implicate UK.

Reminder: We're still down scholarships because Fab Melo got help on a paper and a few kids got paid to speak at the YMCA.

If our "scandal" came out at this point, would we even be punished? Comparing our sanctions to what the punishments for this corruption should be will be insulting.

I'd be very very surprised if it was Syracuse, we were under investigation by the NCAA for a decade so there's no way during that. Could we have engaged in such activities. That and as other posters have stated, we bowed out a number of times four big time recruits because money was perceived to be involved per our board Insiders. Think we're good here. And thank you Jimmy for that!

This all confirms what insiders have said for years. The fact that they have people on wires / on tapes just makes it so much more real for the casual fan. The reality is this is just a tip of the iceberg and many other schools do the same things. They just got the ones they did because of whichever HS player or other individual involved flipped first and agreed to wear a wire or participate in the video taping.

My hope is that the attention makes it a LOT harder for other schools to cheat now and it balances things out for us since we only cheat in horrendously stupid ways (e.g. our AD helps a kid write a paper).

Sounds like the NCAA is guilty of a lack of institutional control.

I heard JB had him over his house for dinner numerous times, and took him on vacations. Also paid for all of his medical bills for years.
worse, I think SU might have paid those medical bills. :(

couldn't agree more...this all shows you how awful the NCAA has been run for years and years. Either have a body that will actually police things fairly and evenly or don't even bother and pay the players.

My take away from all this . . . people are going to get arrested, athletic programs decimated, people are going to lose their jobs, and fans are going to be upset . . . and the crazy thing is that nobody actually did anything wrong!

Well, they all accepted money presumably without declaring it as income which would be felony income tax fraud. That's pretty wrong.

Don't forgot a coach gave a kid a ride and some kids weren't suspended for smoking weed.

I'm kind of excited.

It really makes you wonder about the NCAA - with the nonsense that we were penalized over compared to this. I mean, how does activity like this on a large scale go on under their noses not detected? I can't imagine that there hasn't been a single complaint to the NCAA about this type of activity.

Nope, Joe Blow can get paid $150k to go to school X but we don't know anything about it, but if some Syracuse player gets paid $50 to coach at the Y then blammo!

I sincerely hope the NCAA gets implicated.
