FHCDM and tension in Buffalo

You know, the only thing about this story that really bothered me was the part about him calling himself Saint Doug for the miracle of winning at Syracuse. If you are a Syracuse fan, and believe that he said that, it should piss you off. We all get the challenges, especially what he walked in to, but that stuff doesn't need to be said.

Glad he did what he did for us, and glad he donates money, but other than that, I'd rather he just stop talking about us altogether. With alums like that...

Outside of that, I hope he wins, and wins often, with the Bills. (as a Bills fan).

If Coach Marrone has any confidence in himself, he'd never denigrate his alma mater, former employer, and his current situation to elevate himself - he'd let others say it if it was really true and they would. It's demeaning to those who gave him the opportunities to be where he is and demeaning personally, pandering for kudos. When he succeeded at SU, he received the accolades that he capitalized on to get the Buffalo gig, a true saint would think that the accomplishment was reward enough, wouldn't he? My saints would :).

That said, good luck to him at Buffalo, hoping he wins there too and that he realizes that some people believed in him to give him his opportunity to become a "saint".

He is the patron saint of hubris.

I was just about to like this but then I read your last line. I loathe the Bills. A story not worth mentioning. I think the only time I rooted for Dallas was when they played the Bills in the super bowl. (I still feel dirty) ;)

I agree about the SU slam. Not called for.

We all say things in the heat of an argument - gotta cut him some slack.

According to the story, that wasn't part of the argument. They said he often referred to himself as Saint Doug because of one of the "miracles" he performed. Whether comedy or ego, it doesn't work either way. From the eyes of this alum anyway.

If he called himself Saint Doug in the heat of an argument, then he's horrible at arguing.

If he gets the Bills to the playoffs I will be happy to call him saint Doug.

Saint Doug needs to realize that he is burning bridges left and right with his attitude... Even if he has good year this year his mouth isn't doing him any favors for a long term job in Buffalo. The dude just needs to chill and go have a beer or two. I think he is a great football mind but being a great coach also means having people skills.

Doug is just horrible at handling media and scrutiny, he gets irritated by it and lashes out in a certain way. He's a good football coach. All that said, he just needs to win football games and people won't give a about his ly personality. He wins games, local media and fans will side with the coach when it comes to all these BS player personnel issues.

Didn't see the part where he often said it. Thought it was a one off.

He had to have said it sarcastically. That's the only explanation. Unless of course he is crazy. And I'd like to think he's not crazy.

Agreed, he's a lot of things but not crazy

I'd throw sarcasm in the attempted comedy bucket. I'm sure he had that little grin on his face when he was saying it. It's just not something I like our former alum head coach saying. The program doesn't need it. If it were an outside guy who led our program back to respectability, that's something else. But I'm not the law on this stuff, he can say what he wants.

The problem is that winning games answers the "what have you done for me lately" question... the cowhers of the world who had long term coaching careers were able to combine good coaching with a good personality which enable them to get by down years without having people call for their head. If Saint Doug has one bad year his personality his going to cause him his job. Unlike Harbaugh I don't think Marrone is cut out to succeed in a hostile enviornment.
