FIFA U20 World Cup

A massive upset for the Baby Yanks against France! Their goalkeeper alone had more professional appearances than our whole squad and they’ve got players from PSG, OM, Leipzig, etc. A huge win for the boys!

How did we look? I had the game up on one of my monitors on mute, but couldn't really follow closely. I saw a couple of individual moves by France's right winger/forward that were just beautifully executed -- it certainly looked like we were up against an extremely talented team.

When they went down 2-1 they finally stopped being scared. Played some with confidence. Dest, Soto, and Richards were superb.

France's goalie with a huge error spilling the ball and Rennicks (MLS) got to it first.

They looked overmatch a few times but on the whole it was very good.

Moussa Diaby is going to be a star for PSG and we made him look like Arjen Robben cutting in from the right. We went toe to toe with them as soon as we got comfortable in the second half. Richards has absolutely made the most of his experience at Bayern so far and I look forward to him in the senior squad. Pomykal (sp?) was fantastic in the second half and closed down a ton of plays in defensive midfield. The athleticism of Dest and Keita on the wings was impressive and turned the game when they pushed up. Rennicks was the biggest difference maker and his energy won us this thing. A pretty huge day for the USYNT.

Pomykal has been fun to watch in the MLS -- I think I've seen 4 or 5 games that he's started in. I think he can be a good one for us - great skill with the ball at his feet. Will be interesting to see where he ends up in a few years. Dallas has had a lot of success finding landing spots for their youth overseas.

Glad to see Rennicks surprising people -- I know he's a NER product, but I honestly never remember seeing him play. Hopefully we see more of these MLS academy players bloom to give us a hint we are at least headed in the right direction with player development.

Weah tore up the French defense on the game tying goal.
Soto looks legit as well. Only 18 and playing in Germany.

This team has prospects we will need for the home WC in 2026.
France had more shots and possession but our squad really held their own. Hope they can finish this off. France was the pre-Tournament favorite.

Olympic qualifying coming soon for 2020 in Tokyo. A lot of these guys could play a part there first as well. (It's U23 so Pulisic, Adams, McKennie also eligible for that).

What's different now are the first two goals. Beautiful weight on the pass, crisp timed run from Soto. Clinical finish.
Was really high on Soto coming into the tourney but his quality and touch is impressive for someone his age. Unfortunately for Hannover they were relegated from the Bundesliga this year but hopefully that means he can get first team action in the second division where attacking football is prevalent. Really excited to see what he and Josh Sargent will bring to the table going forward.

That's shaping up to be a pretty good team. We could really use a good showing in the Olympics. What is it, two in a row that we've failed to qualify for?

The French players were very chippy as the US tied and then took the lead. There were a couple certain yellow cards from rough play by France that did not get called.

They did not qualify for 2012 or 2016. The 1997 age group is fairly strong so I would hope they qualify this time around. (The big names most likely won't be involved in qualifying games)

No doubt, the African influence has turned France into a powwerhouse at all levels.

Diaby is the real deal.

We still don't have that first touch and 1-2 combos that the best countries in the world can do in their sleep but we do have a few players on this team with those abilities and I thought we were really good on the counter...

Both their centerbacks made crucial errors on the first two goals and, as was pointed out above, their goalie made the error on the 3rd goal. It was a helluva pass by Weah and a helluva touch by Soto on that second goal. Not sure who gave the through ball to Soto on the first goal but it was also a great pass that was perfectly weighted...

Defensively, I actually thought we were pretty solid. We did a pretty good job tracking runners. Our biggest issues occurred when we pressed and they would find either Diaby or their #6 between our lines and they would turn and run at us...that was discomforting...Diaby has some serious pace...

Richie Ledesma (just signed with PSV) got the assist on Soto's first.

Yeah, I liked our defense, too. Especially that one kid playing left center back. I lost count of how many good plays he made. We seemed pretty good in midfield, too. I thought we had several kids who had good skills on the ball. It seemed like mostly we are lacking quality in the final third.

Yes, good recall. 18, right? I remember being disappointed when he was subbed off but Tab definitely pulled the right strings in inserting Rennicks and the other kid looked dangerous, as well.

Yeah he's 18 i think.

Baby Yanks lose to Ecuador 2-1. Had some chances but ultimately were overrun in midfield.

Most likely to become consistent senior team guys: Richards, Weah, Mendez.

I’d rather have Weah on the wings right now than a retread like Arriola (who I know has been playing more of the wing back role recently). Mendez needs to just get a bit stronger but he’s already so promising as a free kick specialist. I’d add Soto to this list. He’s been one of the most clinical finishers in the tournament. Richards speaks for himself and I expect Bayern to send him on a loan spell soon like they do with most of their young blossoming players. He’ll get consistent time at a club like Düsseldorf or Mainz and come back and contend for a spot in the team.

Yeah for a CB like Richards, he reads the game so well and doesn't go to ground unless he has to. Positioning is flawless. Just needs first-team games. FC Augsburg, Dusseldorf, or even Hoffenheim would be good spots.

Future nationals back to front-

Ochoa, Richards, McKenzie, Dest, Gloster, Durkin (only because of ggg), Pomykal, ledezma, Llanez, Weah (I like him more as 9 but he is wing at the moment), and Soto.

Méndez has to really up his work rate. He is a pure luxury player now, and we don’t have the talent to compensate for what he doesn’t do. Frankly, the pure #10 is really out of style everywhere.

Champs.

Can’t even put into words what this means for the country of Ukraine right now.
