Fire Autry

This is the issue. There should be all of the reverence and celebration for what JB did for SU basketball and SU overall (and his charity work, etc). But he was paid millions, has the court named after him, put a statue up if you want and he'll always have a home at SU, as he should. He's in the HoF as he should be and the guy should be able to eat for free at any diner he wants in the 315 area code.

But at this point, it's time to look forward.

He was given runway at the end of this tenure way past what it should have been imo, but one can reasonably argue that he earned it. I would never argue it, but you can.

Then he apparently had so much sway over the admin and BoT that we *had* to hire Red or else we would have endured a thousand years of drought and plague. I don't think that would have been the case, but what do I know.

At this point, I don't want anyone that has ties to JB as HC or even on staff, really. We've paid the pied piper and then some.

Respect the past, but we need to forge a new future.

Phenomenal post.

100% on point, across the board.

100% agree.

Reneging on Hop when JB was supposed to retire was the beginning of the end. He never should have been allowed to do that considering how things were starting to turn and decisions he made on the recruiting trail, overruling Mike, that turned out to be huge mistakes. Then hiring Autry hired after allowing JB to hang on a handful of years past his time should have been administrative malpractice. Hate saying it, but we deserve everything we’re getting by screwing over Hop.

He should have been let go after the second violation

I haven’t gone through all the “fire Red” threads (there are many) so forgive me if this has been covered, but how are we not totally screwed next year either way? We don’t have big recruits coming in and assuming most guys don’t come back we’re gonna need to construct our roster through the portal. How do we do that if a new coach and presumptive staff isn’t in place by March?
forget about high school recruiting, teams are built by the portal, you build your team year-by-year through the portal. High school recruiting has never been less important unless you land a one and done.

Hypothetical question. A number of posters in this thread have made statements that JB did or is holding the basketball program hostage. As I've ready said, I'm not sure what that means. I don't know about the past but I don't understand what it means that he's holding the program hostage now. One poster said or alluded to the possibility that JB has sufficient donors agreeing to not fund a buyout for Autry. Hypothetically, if that it so, could JB keep his hands on those ropes unless he approves of Autry's replacement. So the hypotheical question for those who have posted on or read this thread -- if you have only one choice, what would you chose for after this season, regardless of what our record is -- keep Autry for at least another year (or maybe longer) or replace him with Gerry McNamara? No other choices presented. Although I love GMac and thought he should have gotten the job 3 years ago (and still believe that's what JB wanted), I am not advocating for that now. I think it's a potentially interesting hypothetical question for us to discuss. [I'll duck and wait for the incoming.]

Would you rather eat dog poop or cat poop? Is that a potentially interesting hypothetical question for us to discuss?

I've posted a dozen times I cannot imagine there's much of a buyout after year 3 of Autry's contract. Can anyone confirm it's not much of a (self-inflicted) hurdle?

I don’t believe any of the “holding hostage” stuff is true. I wouldn’t worry about it.

If one pays attention to certain posters here who know what’s going on, it sure seems that Autry is as good as gone, barring something totally unforeseen occurring.

If there is the AD needs to be looked at.
I’ve said it numerous times last year when we had this discussion, how in gods name do we allow Autry to have a buy out when there was no capitalistic competition to hire him? Not a single other power program would have even provided him an interview. If we truly agreed to a buy out, the whole Atheltic department needs to be scrutinized. Pitiful negation skills if so.

Maybe we could actually determine if there is a meaningful buyout before we fire everyone in the athletic department?

I’ve seen zero evidence that there’s any buyout that would impact the school’s ability to remove Autry as HC.

I was wondering how that got determined as credible. Feels like the online version of the telephone game.

Because JB demanded it? Think George Burns pulling strings.

After ardently following football and basketball my entire life (and I was a fan who sat in Manley as kid and watched the dome be built) the reality is setting in that the true glory days of sustained success probably are over in this new world and it is time as Buzz Shaw once encouraged to go get a life. You need a great coach and deep pockets for any sort of sustained success and some form of roster stability. Even Duke with all of their resources just had their 2026-2027 football season trashed.

My sentiment as well and for a while now. For me, what puts the icing on the cake, is that the players on our roster (not homogeneous to SU) could really give two shites about Syracuse University, et al. Nowadays, it's all about the name on the back of the jerseys vs. the front and simply pimping yourself to whomever has the capacity to provide the biggest load.
