Correct. Only conference champions can get the byes. Notre Dame will top out in the 5 v. 12 game when they have a great season and that's perfectly OK w/them.

Doesn't that lead to a future problem because of divisions? Say a 9-3 USC beats 12-0 OSU 21-20, they get the bye over OSU even though OSU won over the regular season 42-10? Or a bye over 12-1 Alabama who only lost to 13-0 Georgia?

Aren’t divisions a thing of the past because they want the 2 best teams in the CCG.

ACC really benefits from the P12 going away here.

Yeah no more divisions. It will have very little impact on the B18 or SEC. Their CCGs will be between two Top 10 teams. Where it could get interesting is in the ACC and B16. Those conferences the #2 team will likely be outside the Top 10. Which means to get a 2nd team they actually want the #2 team to win for the $, as long as it does not also knock out the #1 team. For instance this year #14 Louisville winning a close game vs #4 FSU gets both teams in.

If 3 schools in the ACC were playing at the level they were in the 90's when they were in the Big East, the ACC wouldn't have these problems. Somehow Miami, Virginia Tech, and Syracuse need to get their Mojo back.
Hopefully Fran is our answer.

Agree. I think most years we can have 2 top 10 programs nothing standing in the way of it. Stars can align for 3 teams but that would require a perfect storm situation and we also now have the fewest teams.

Reality is the ACC hasn’t done it’s part we should all thanks Loserville for ending Notre Dames humiliating 30 game winning streak vs the ACC in regular season games.

The winner getting a bye is huge because I feel like the 5-12 winners are gonna be mince meat in the QFs vs teams off byes.

The ACC, SEC, and B1G have scrapped divisions. The two teams with the best records will play for the championship. The restriction is what the SEC pushed in order to get the expansion actually passed and keep ND from joining the B1G or ACC. No one outside the SEC was going to vote in favor of expanding the playoffs and allowing non-champions to have a bye. The B1G probably thought that they would be in a position to have two teams be in consideration less often than the SEC would, so they were willing to establish the restriction.
