Flagrant Foul Rule

The refs need to also have some discretion for the severity of the blow. The initial intent of the rule was to stop the viscous throwing of elbows during rebounding where some guys were being hit by powerful and dangerous blows. Many of these out on the floor incidents involve grazed touches and frankly a lot of acting in many instances and the penalty is out of line. They are also penalizing the mere swinging of elbows without any contact at all.

The Gerald Henderson Rule!!! After he had a hard foul on Hansbrough and got ejected, the NCAA wanted to setup rules to eliminate all elbowing without ejecting the player.

I have a hard time saying it was a flagrant foul when you really dont see much of any reaction by the player getting hit. did he even hit him ? hard to tell. the contact could also have been bwteen the elbow and the shoulder under arm area, not even the elbow. if the replay doesnt really show contact the player doesnt react to it why call a foul. and if you are going to call those as flagrant fouls then start calling the viscous fouls under the basket more often that have way more intent.

cooney may have hit him, but he also looked to be trying to swing the ball thru without causing contact, shouldnt the point of replaying it mean you want to help in the decision of whether it was really a bad play..

If they don't want to retroactively call fouls on the defender in these situations via replay, they need to change the rule so that even if space isn't allowed, the defender cannot touch the offensive player and still get the flagrant 1 called. In other words, you don't have to allow space, but if you're making contact you're infringing on the space the ball carrier is occupying. That should negate the flagrant foul call. Ideally they'd correctly call the foul on the defender, too, but I'll take the middle ground.

Otherwise, coaches would be smart to tell their players to trap a guy where he can't pivot without whacking you in the face, then lean on him, since it's always going to be 2 and the ball.
