Theoretically, what you are saying works. It also explains why there is absolutely no chance it’s going to happen. “Making the upside bigger” would mean a coach would give up the guarantee in exchange for a buttload more money annually. Instead of making $13MM annually, a coach like Smart would make $35MM (or something way, way, WAY more than $13MM).

You really think that’s going to happen, that schools are going to massively increase what they paid coaches to “buy” their way out of guaranteed contracts?

Yes, there’s a way. That literally everyone involved would hate passionately. So - guaranteed contracts are going to continue to be the norm for a long time.
