Florida State 2-9

I bet we start seeing coaching performance clauses and less guaranteed money.
I think there's almost no chance of this. Coaches have all the leverage, particularly good ones who have had success at their school.

yeah, that is why your handle says VTAaron. Because you are a tepid Va Tech fan. You took a shot at Syracuse. Okay. I just pointed out that Va tech has never won anything.
He is an SU fan and actually goes to away games, Dasher when was the last time you went to an away game?

I suggest trying OrangeAaron. We could be brothers!

So make the upside bigger. There's always a way.

Theoretically, what you are saying works. It also explains why there is absolutely no chance it’s going to happen. “Making the upside bigger” would mean a coach would give up the guarantee in exchange for a buttload more money annually. Instead of making $13MM annually, a coach like Smart would make $35MM (or something way, way, WAY more than $13MM).

You really think that’s going to happen, that schools are going to massively increase what they paid coaches to “buy” their way out of guaranteed contracts?

Yes, there’s a way. That literally everyone involved would hate passionately. So - guaranteed contracts are going to continue to be the norm for a long time.

Why? Like what are you trying to accomplish here?
More equal distribution of risk. If Norvel fails, and it's highly likely he has, buying him out costs 85% of the remainder of his contract.

FSU is in the same position with Norvel that they are with the ACC, stuck.

At some point the risk the school is willing to assume is going to put a damper on aggressive contracts like that.

Most people wait until after a game to make comments. You will be here after our game if we win, right? Oh, and what does this have to do with your school? Have you guys ever, ever, won anything? We have national titles in football, hoop, Lax and soccer? What have you won?

You forgot the cross country and field hockey championships.
VPI not only has not won a single NCAA team championship, but no VPI team has ever been ranked #1 nationally at any time in any season in any sport. They did win the unofficial bassin' championship, though.

The problem with that hypothesis is supply and demand is a real thing. First, the bigger schools with more ability to buy out contracts will maintain a massive competitive advantage with the only access to the best coaches by guaranteeing contracts if schools like Syracuse don’t. It effectively forces guaranteed contracts to be the standard. Additionally, if the NFL contracts are guaranteed and college isn’t, colleges would need to pay a premium for coaches over the pros. No matter how much revenue college football brings in, it is dwarfed by the NFL - there is no way colleges will pay a premium for head coaches.

Right now, this very moment - colleges could offer non-guaranteed contracts. They don’t because they can’t without reducing their applicant pool to an unacceptable degree. The only way to get there is for all colleges and the NFL to collude to eliminate guaranteed contracts for coaches - but that’s a prisoners dilemma where the incentive to break the agreement to get a high end coach is so great that it would inevitably happen - almost immediately - and the market would go back to guaranteed contracts.

Yup. All of this.

Agreed

That's the problem with the current system in college sports. If you're the next AD at FSU, that doesn't have the resources of an ATM, UM, etc, you will not have the risk appetite to do this again, and will likely become a feeder program in terms of players and coaches.

So what you’re saying is that Hartwick College, a school in Oneonta, New York with about 1300 students, has more division 1 national championships (1977 Men’s soccer) and number one rankings than Virginia Tech?
