Fool's Gold

You must not watch other ACC games.

- UVa has put up multiple games like we played
- BC doesn't play offense
- NC State is a paper tiger and looks bad to mediocre
- Louisville is beatable
- Pitt has a good defense, but are not great at offense

Clemson and FSU look out of our league - but we are young and inconsistent - but have talent to make it fun on O.

Because of this debacle the season rests on the UVA game next week. Still think we gave up a must win game today. BTW I haven't seen another ACC team on our schedule lose like we did today. Closest was UVA-Boise but Boise is not USF.

Poor coaching and poor QB play. Tough to overcome and beat a decent team

Yep we can rationalize all we want. Edsall and his band of horsesh** players turned the ball over 5 times against these guys and still won by 2 TDs. They held USF to about 50 yards passing too. I like Shafer a lot but you can't have games like this against this kind of competition. I guarantee Coyle would agree. They didn't look prepared. Not one bit. Very disappointed to say the least. Still love my Orange but this one was tough to stomach

It was a terrible game for SU. I think they are a week to week team. Are they good? Ask me when the season ends...

Bingo. Games like this are becoming a theme under Shafer, its reminiscent of the last few years of the P era. To get blown out by USF, young team or not alarm bells should be going off.

We never had games like this under Marrone. Don't get me wrong--we lost plenty of games where we were just undermanned / overmatched, but unprepared? Nope.

The staff will determine their fate over the next 7 games.

I venture to guess we'll have better idea after the Pitt game.

As it should be. But it will honestly be funny if we win the next game or two, and the board pendulum swings completely the opposite way. Manic.

You are 100% right. This team just lost the casual/bandwagon fans today. Clark will be coming to a half filled dome to see us take on Pitt. Crushing defeat for the program.
Those fans were only showing up for the osu game regardless

If Whitner doesn't commit that silly late hit, we're only 7 down with 10:00 left.

Which means we could have tied it up.

As bad as the defense was today, we were still in it. Whitner's penalty, and Dungey's INT (plus 30 more penalty yards) caused the wheels to come off.

The numbers were horribly tilted in USF's favor, but we were a score and a stop away from being in position to win.

I dont disagree with any of that but we still gave up 35 second half pts to USF, not Clemson or FSU but 1-3 South Florida.
Your comments on Whitner are correct though, changed the game. Completely idiotic.

We lost the game because: young team first road game
Stupid play where ball hits SU player in back on fair catch
Quedtionnle penalty call against SU
Conservative first half call laying
Couldn't tackle USF player for a
Loss I. 4th Q and they get first down on 3 and 14

Plus bad defense

Feels like "road game" and "first road game" has been said 8,001 times on the front page. Come on. Our home/away splits the last few years are about as meaningful as the Dallas Cowboys. USF doesn't even have a stadium FFS. Baldwinsville is a more intimidating environment.

The consolation is that it's not a talent issue at least on offense. We lost this game in the first half due to poor play calling. SFU was crashing the edges to stop the option yet we kept doing it over and over and over. Lester needed to go deep off of play action in the first half but he was too conservative. We blew our chance to take the lead and left the d out there too long. Game over.

Given hoe poor our pass d is we need to score a ton of points to win games. The sooner HCSS and Lester recognize that the better. We can't rely on grinding out wins... We need to play every game like the 2md half.

1) I said last week we need to throw the ball 12-14 times a game to Ishmael. That doesn't mean zero times until you're down 2 touchdowns.

2) We have some good horses, but we don't have the horses to lead with the run game and use the run game to set the pass

Ok I bet 3-9 to 5-7. That's still two opportunities for wins vs an ACC schedule. Sorry that's what I see and really what I saw from the beginning. We all expected 3-1 vs this joke of an early season schedule. Other than keeping it close vs LSU what did you see that made you think differently? We beat CMU 40-3 last year and had to beat them in OT this year and you somehow thought this year was going to be different?

CMU last year has no bearing on this year.

Yeah, I didn't get to watch it, but following the play by play, the score makes this game look a lot farther out of reach than it was. We failed to get a stop when we needed to.

The defense was bad today, but the reason why I keep talking about offense is because it gives the defense more breathing room. They're going to get beat sometimes. A lot of times, even. That's college football today. If your offense is beating up the other defense, you've got a puncher's chance. We seem to wait a while to start punching.

We beat three teams this year that we would have beaten (did beat) last year by more points. We are currently getting exposed against a mediocre USF team.

This was my worry. Other than the LSU game that we expected to lose anyways, our toughest games were to come. Our "vaunted" run defense exposed. Our bad secondary confirmed.

Positivity sucked out of the season. Anticipating 4-8, maybe 5-7.

If we play on defense the way we played today we will lose the rest of our games. And we would have lost against Wake and maybe CMU. The great thing is that this is college football. Texas beats Oklahoma. Miami is beating FSU. Rutgers is tied with MSU. We are expecting 18-23 year olds to act more mature than we are.

This might be the worst loss coming out of a bye. For a defensive minded coach, USF had two weapons. The qb and Mack. To let them beat you is inexcusable. Gotta force him to pass. Shafers worst game to date... And very telling.
GA Tech was worse.
I was at both games... it's not even close.

Until the out of bounds hit, victory was still possible.
By GA Tech's 2nd score the game was over.

B.C. lost to Wake 3-0. N.C State and I guess maybe Pitt are winnable. I don't think we are this bad. Bad, but not this Bad.
Pitt will whip us with an effort like that. Whip us bad.

And I've watched other USF games where they looked easily beatable. Then we played them.

Inconsistent. Like us.

This teams highs are higher than last season, but the consistency game to game and sometimes play to play is wanting.

Hopefully over they grow through it enough to go bowling.

What have the highs been? Losing by 10 to a half-asleep LSU team?

This team hasn't really accomplished anything other than beating the worst ACC team and Rhode Island. They won't be favored in any of the remaining games and will be lucky to get four wins against FBS teams.

Sorry, but that's SU football indefinitely.

Gtech was at least a decent team, this team lost to Memphis.

we did not show up, simple as that. i believe its crucial that shafer handles this calmly with his young team. get them to learn from it and not go balistic. lots of football left
