football continues to be so stupid

in that case, kicking deep is just as much a death sentence

But kicking deep doesn't give you a chance to potentially get the ball back immediately. I don't follow you.

if you're down a lot with limited time, you might as well try onside kicks because you're not going to have any chance to win if you give up multiple first downs. you need three and outs. so try the onside kick and if it fails, well now you just need to force a three and out anyway. if you kick deep and force a three and out, they boot it fifty yards. if you go onside and force a three and out, they have to pooch it and your firled position isn't that different

there's not that much downside to onside kicks when you need three and outs to have any chance regardless

Shambolic play calling from Atlanta. Their defense is terrible. Why give NE the ball with so much time.
To give me 3 minutes to accept the fact the Pats were going to win.

Putting a higher value on potential field position than potential possessions, SSA SDRAWKCAB.

it helps that after the onside kick Atlanta didnt get a Fg there either when just 5-6 yds of offense would have done it.

The real stupidity started when they were up 16 with 8 minuets left and have 3rd and 1 and try to pass the ball and get sacked and fumble. If they run the ball and get it 1st down the game is over. If they don't get it and punt, Pats would have used up most of the time on that drive and would not have that surge of energy. Kyle Shanahan is a goof.

The best part of that play was Freeman was in the backfield but he was lined up a full two years ahead of Ryan. so with the exception of a direct snap there was no real threat to run. Basically asked the Pats to bring 5

Probably to decrease the amount of time a physically stronger rusher has to gain momentum. It's okay if the whole stadium knows you're passing as long as you execute your protection.

Regardless, none of it mattesr if Freeman executes his assignment, that was a terrrrrrible effort. I mean, at least try to cut him. If you're only going to give him a half hearted chicken wing, stay on teh sidelines.

I was wondering if that's a situation where Coleman's usually in, but, because he was banged up they had to go with Freeman.

Basically what happened was this- Atlanta had to actually do everything they could to lose the game, and they did.

It was a remarkable collapse. Was there any person in the entire country who didn't think NE would tie the game if they got the ball back down 1 score? Was there any person in the entire country who didn't think NE would win if they got ball first in OT?

This is what happens when the little things like running for a yard or simply not LOSING 12 YARDS are somehow overlooked. There was absolutely nothing the coaches needed to pull from their playbook once that game went to the 4th quarter. Just use logic. Understand who you are playing, understand the cost/benefit associated with calling certain plays, understand your RB had been having big runs all game, understand you have the most physically gifted wide-out in the league (who should have won them the game). And they failed.

i wasnt sure if Freeman was supposed to chip and release or actually make a block. ryan could have just tossed it to him as well.

To reiterate:
Run it 3 times up the gut.
You use clock, or you make them use their timeouts, and even with a loss of yardage, you kick a gimme FG...GAME'S OVER!
Why...for the love of everything holy, would you NOT do that? :bang:
