The rare exception cited by the Times where basketball outdrew football was, of course, a bowl game involving Rutgers.

I totally get the point that they are trying to make but I think a few things are not being factored into this analysis, the biggest being that during the NCAA tourny games are played usually twice a week (so really you should add ND's audience for their game this weekend and the audience for the upcoming game against WSU) not just their first game in order to cmopare it to football. That to me would be a more accurate compairson. Also there is about a month build up in football to watch one bowl game. So its not exactly apples to apples.

It is sort of a meaningless comparison. You can only watch one game at a time. There are a lot more basketball games than football games and many take place at the same time. Comparing to a single bowl game for each team is not all that meaningful to me.
