I'm not a runner but I always thought that the Ultra Marathoners were a strange breed. Isn't there one race through the Death Valley desert. I guess it's a different type of high.
Here is a book/story that I recommend. I recently read it and it is a great inspiration. It's Matt Long, "The Long Run", about a NYC firefighter/marathoner who got run over by a bus during training. The book is all about his recovery.
