Welcome to National Onion Rings Day!

National Onion Rings Day is an informal food holiday celebrating onion rings. The little-known, little-publicized holiday falls on June 22.1 It is not an official holiday recognized by governments or sponsored by a well-known organization or corporation.

Onion rings are a snack food, fast food, side dish or appetizer made from circles of sliced onion or onion paste, coated in a batter or breading, and fried.2 They are most well known in Western countries and a few Asian countries, where they are often served as part of fast food meals and sometimes restaurant meals.

It is not known who originally created onion rings or when. It is known that in 1933 a recipe for onion rings appeared in a Criscoshorteningadvertisement in ‘’The New York Times’’.3

Anonymous scouts offer brutally honest takes on top NBA prospects (campusrush.com; Davis)

Finch is getting sentimental in his old age. "The quality of these kids is unbelievable. There are very few bad kids anymore," he told me. "I think a lot of these kids have figured out that being a badass doesn't work anymore. Acting right has become more important. I'm telling you, it's mind-blowing the quality of people that are coming out of college basketball right now."

Note that Finch wasn't talking about the quality of players in this year's NBA draft class. He was talking about their collective character. That's a hopeful sign that college basketball is healthy, that the sport overall has a promising future, and that character still counts for something. Pretty good themes as we head into Thursday night's Draft.

Michael Gbinije, 6'7" senior guard, Syracuse: "He's good, but the guy is 24. He should be better than everybody else. I think he has some value on a good team but no value on a bad team. He's a really good straight-line athlete who can make a three, and he should be able to guard people. He's a good risk as a second round pick. He can fill a stat sheet."
...
...
Malachi Richardson, 6'6" freshman guard, Syracuse: "Hard one to get a handle on. Big kid, huge hands, inconsistent shooter. I don't think he's a pure shooter yet. If he can tighten up that jump shot he can be a prototypical two/three in the league. My question is, can he make plays with the ball in his hands? Seems like he's striking while the iron is hot because of his last 10 minutes against Virginia in the NCAA tournament. He played in that zone at Syracuse so you don't know if he can defend. He has broad shoulders so he'll fill out. My main concern would be whether he's athletic enough to play against starters eventually."

The Top 10 NBA 2017 Draft Prospects in the ACC (BR; slide show; Pedersen)

Youth will be served in the ACC during the 2016-17 season, as 11 of the top 30 players in 247Sports' recruiting rankings are headed to the league this fall. This influx of new talent comes as the ACC says goodbye to some big names, many of whom are likely to get drafted into the NBA later this month.

We'll probably be saying the same thing a year from now, in terms of the to-the-pros talent exodus, based on the number of ACC players listed on DraftExpress' early 2017 mock draft. And, not surprisingly, a lot of the best pro prospects have yet to start their college careers.

It's not entirely about the incoming freshmen in the ACC, though. Check out our rankings of the league's best 2017 NBA prospects to see what we mean.

5. Tyler Lydon, So., Syracuse

Position: Small forward
Height, weight: 6'9”, 205 lbs

A strong indicator that Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim has a “type” when it comes to the players he recruits is that 2015 additions Tyler Lydon and Malachi Richardson were essentially carbon copies. Each was a long-and-lean wing who loved to shoot three-pointers but could also hold their own on the glass.

Their freshman numbers were similar, too. The 6'6” Richardson averaged 13.4 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 35.3 percent on threes, while Lydon averaged 10.1 points and 6.3 rebounds and hit 40.5 percent of his three-pointers. The two main differences: Richardson did so as a starter and used his performance to jump to the pros, while Lydon came off the bench and is sticking around for at least another year.

Lydon will take Richardson's starting spot and figures to be a major focus of the Orange's offense. He'll also be a critical piece of their patented zone defense, coming off an initial campaign in which his 16.5 percent defensive rebounding rate was second only to starting center DaJuan Coleman's among regulars.

Lawyer turning century-old Syracuse building into stores, huge apartment (photos) (PS; Moriarty)

Lawyer Tom Cerio has dropped plans to demolish a vacant, 102-year-old downtown building and instead is turning it into new storefronts and a super-large apartment.

Work is well underway on the building at 431-441 S. Warren St., which has been around since 1914 and is known as the WFBL building because Syracuse's first radio station once occupied it.

Two of its three storefronts are already leased. Voltage Video, a video game shop, will relocate to the building from nearby East Jefferson Street later this month, and Cifra Barber and Beauty Shop will open in July, Cerio said.

No tenant has been signed up yet for the third storefront, an area of the building formerly occupied by Meltzer's III eatery. Cerio said it would make an excellent location for another restaurant.

At 3,800 square feet, the apartment he is building on the second floor is bigger than most homes in Onondaga County, let alone downtown apartments. Cerio said he is targeting it to executives or empty nesters who want to live downtown but still desire plenty of living and storage space.

"It's certainly going to be an executive-style apartment," he said. "It's going to have high-end finishes and private parking in back."

The apartment is expected to be ready for occupancy by the end of August. It will have two master bedrooms, each with its own full bathroom. The apartment also will have a half-bath, a walk-through pantry and a total of 700 square feet of storage space in multiple closets.

I'm feeling really good about this team. Young talent in Battle and Moyer, Chukwu with a year of practice anchoring the defense. Some veterans that will lead this team to the tourney and could be just as successful as last year, maybe better. Let's get this thing done.
