Welcome to World Diabetes Day!

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated annually on November 14. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225.

Syracuse basketball recruiting: Forward Oshae Brissett becomes 1st member of SU's 2017 class (DO; Schwedelson)

Class of 2017 forward Oshae Brissett has verbally committed to Syracuse, he announced Saturday night. He chose SU over offers from Oregon, Memphis and Southern California, among others.

Brissett is the Orange’s first commit in the 2017 class. He’s ranked with four stars by ESPN, with three stars by 247Sports.com’s composite rankings and with three stars according to At their request, this network is being blocked from this site..

247Sports’ composite ranking lists Brissett as the 138th best player in the 2017 class.

Brissett is listed at 6 feet 9 inches and 190 pounds according to multiple recruiting sites. He’s a native of Ontario, Canada.

Next season, Syracuse has five available scholarship if all eligible players return. SU’s forwards eligible to play in 2017-18 are Paschal Chukwu, Tyler Lydon, Matthew Moyer and Taurean Thompson. The Orange will have 11 scholarships — rather than the typical 13 — as a result of the NCAA’s sanctions against SU.

Thornwell leads South Carolina to an 81-49 victory (nwitimes.com; Iacobelli)

Sindarius Thornwell doesn't feel like he's starting from zero, despite a South Carolina roster filled with newcomers.

Thornwell, a senior, scored 20 points including four 3-pointers to lead the Gamecocks to an 81-49 victory over Holy Cross on Sunday night.

Thornwell comes off a 25-win season with South Carolina that featured a starting lineup of upperclassmen. This time, the Gamecocks have seven first-time players to mix into games. So far, so good, Thornwell says.

"It's been good," he said. "Everybody came in focused."

South Carolina played a dozen people, 10 of them getting 10 minutes or more. Plan on it being the norm this season, according to South Carolina coach Frank Martin. "This team has depth like I haven't had since I've been here," he said.

Holy Cross stunned college basketball last March, winning the Patriot League tournament and earning an automatic NCAA bid despite a 10-19 regular season. The Crusaders went on to a First Four matchup win over Southern for the school's first Big Dance win since 1953. Holy Cross will try and build on that success with five of their top six scorers returning from a year ago.

FELDER DEBUT

South Carolina guard Rakym Felder saw his first college action, less than a month after he was arrested for assault among other charges. Felder played 14 minutes and finished with eight points, swishing both of his three-point attempts. Martin said he had talked with athletic director Ray Tanner, vouching for Felder's character. "Ra Felder played because it's my decision that he has accepted everything that came his way for his mistake," Martin said.

"He's a beautiful kid, not a good kid, a beautiful kid," Martin continued.

Recruiting Roundup: Oshae Brissett commits as Quade Green visits - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Tough loss, but it was still a great season for the women’s field hockey team. On to today’s recruiting links…

Syracuse picked up a commitment from Oshae Brissett, he announced during Saturday’s Knicks/Raptors game, and also tweeted over the weekend. He was also weighing offers from USC, Oregon, and Memphis, and becomes the first commit in SU’s 2017 class. “He is an amazing talent with great length and can score the basketball from every angle,” said CIA Bounce coach Tony McIntyre said to Adam Zagoria.

Perhaps more good news is on the way. With about a week to go before he makes his college decision, Quade Green took a trip up to Syracuse over the weekend. It is his fourth trip since late August, and other schools involved in his recruitment include Kentucky, Duke, Villanova and Temple.

Green was joined by another 2017 prospect, big man Bourama Sidibe, tweetsSyracuse.com’s Mike Waters. The St. Benedict’s Prep star is rated three stars by 247 Sports, and is also considering Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, among others.

At their request, this network is being blocked from this site.’s Chad Simmons writes that Syracuse was the first school to offer 2019 Georgia offensive lineman Wanya Morris. “It feels great knowing that I am able to go to college and get an education for free,” said Morris about his first offer.

Syracuse Basketball: Three Takeaways From The Orange's Opener | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Godnick)

The season is officially under way, and with a win against Colgate, the Syracuse Orange are off to an expected hot start. Friday night’s victory over the Raiders convinced any and all doubters who didn’t take the Orange seriously this year; with a complete performance, the Orange now boast a deep roster with an endless amount of possible breakout performances every night.

The point guard play is as elite as it gets
The Orange are as privileged as it gets this year with their depth at the point guard position. The position includes the athletic Frank Howard and the complete John Gillon. Howard, the starter, got things going verse Colgate, setting the pace and creating for himself and his teammates. The 6’4” guard finished with 11 points on four of four shooting, while also tallying nine assists. If this kind of play stays consistent, the Orange are in good hands.

On the Panthers: Pitt makes quick switch to zone (post-gazette.com; Meyer)

For the greater part of the past eight months, Kevin Stallings and the Pitt men’s basketball team have worked endlessly to get accustomed to one another. The players, many of whom operated in the same system for at least the past two years, have had to adjust to new schemes offensively and defensively, and their new coach has had to get acclimated to his personnel, almost all of whom he didn’t recruit.

If Friday’s double-overtime victory against Eastern Michigan proved anything, it’s that any preseason talk of a set-in-stone system might have been misguided.

After spending much of the game in a man-to-man look predicated on switching, Stallings shifted almost exclusively to a zone defense as the game continued. That look runs counter to the way he has coached and his players have played defense much of their respective careers, but it proved to be a shrewd move that neutralized the Eagles late and helped the Panthers escape with a closer-than-expected win to open the 2016-17 season.

As the transition to a new coach continues with a game against Gardner-Webb tonight, flexibility, particularly on defense, will be a consistent theme.

“I’m not married to playing defense just one way,” Stallings said Friday. “I think we probably played four different defenses tonight. We’ll hunt and search if we have to. If we’re not having success with one, we’ll go to another.”

For the Panthers, it presents a glass-half-full or half-empty situation. Is the change a sign that the new coaching staff made savvy and necessary adjustments to help get the team a win? Or is it disconcerting that, in just the first game, the defensive blueprint was already abandoned, even if just briefly?

Entering the game, Pitt’s primary defensive concern was containing reigning Mid-American Conference freshman of the year James Thompson, a player with the kind of talent to lure scouts from multiple NBA teams to the Petersen Events Center to watch him. As it turned out, Thompson was the least of the Panthers’ problems defensively. Eastern Michigan’s guards, especially in the first half, routinely blew by defenders and got to the basket with relative ease against a team lacking rim protectors.

BOZICH | My weekly AP college basketball Top 25 ballot (wdrb.com; Bozo)

...
1. Duke (2-0) — The Blue Devils averaged 95 points in their first two games without several of their top young players.
2. Villanova (1-0) — The Wildcats didn’t get special treatment for winning the national championship. They’re playing at Purdue Monday night in the Gavitt Games.
3. North Carolina (2-0) — I’m already looking forward to watching Roy Williams bring the Tar Heels to Bloomington at the end of the month.
4. Oregon (1-0) — Dana Altman just got a contract extension. Maybe he can fix the Ducks’ floundering football program, too.
5. Wisconsin (1-0) — Another Gavitt Games bonus takes the Badgers to Creighton Tuesday.
6. Kentucky (2-0) — The Wildcats head to New York City where I expect them to handle an undersized Michigan State team without much fretting.
7. Virginia (1-0) — What’s new? The Cavaliers held UNC-Greensboro to 51 points.
8. Louisville (1-0) — How good is William & Mary? Better than Evansville, I hope.
...
...
19. Michigan State (0-1) — I’ve tried to warn people the Spartans don’t have a post player and Tom Izzo will need time to work this out.

20. San Diego State (1-0) — Let’s see what the Aztecs do at Gonzaga Monday.

21. Cincinnati (1-0) — Mick Cronin doesn’t have a Kenyon Martin or Sean Kilpatrick but he gets his guys to play together.

22. Syracuse (1-0) — We’ll find out what Jim Boeheim has when the Orange visit Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
