Syracuse moves up to 17th in AP Poll (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

The Syracuse Orange are 3-0 on the year, and the Associated Press has moved them up one spot in the polls as a result. They’re ranked 17th according to the poll released today.

SU moves up by way of some shifts all around the top 20 or so. While we were certainly impressed by what Syracuse was able to do to Holy Cross and Monmouth last week, the voters were more focused on what others did or did not do. Creighton moved up from 22nd to 12th after upsetting Wisconsin. But Purdue and Michigan State dropped due to losses to Villanova and Kentucky, respectively.

Syracuse is still one of six ACC teams in the top 25 this week. Duke fell from first to sixth after a loss to Kansas, North Carolina moved up to fourth, Virginia up to seventh and Louisville is now 10th. Florida State entered the poll at 25th. Aforementioned Orange opponent Wisconsin is now just one spot above us at 16th in this week’s rankings. Miami, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech also received votes.

With two games this week — vs. South Carolina State and South Carolina — SU has a chance to stay the course or even move up too, depending on what happens around them. That Wisconsin game is looming large, however. If they can take down the Badgers on the road next week, SU could be looking at a very strong non-conference start.

Syracuse basketball recruiting: 4-star 2017 big man Bourama Sidibe commits to SU (DO; Schneidman)

Four-star big man Bourama Sidibe has committed to Syracuse, he announced at his high school on Monday afternoon.

The Class of 2017 Saint Benedict’s (New Jersey) prospect took visits to SU, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech. He attended the Orange’s season-opening win over Colgate on his official visit. ESPN lists Sidibe as 6 feet, 10 inches and 225 pounds and the second-best player in New Jersey.

Former Syracuse point guard Tyler Ennis also attended St. Benedict’s, and current SU players Tyler Roberson and Tyus Battle also hail from the Garden State. Last year’s Elite Eight hero, Malachi Richardson, comes from the state as well.

Sidibe is the Orange’s second commit in the Class of 2017 after Oshae Brissett pledged to Syracuse on Nov. 13. The Orange lost out on five-star prospects Billy Preston (Kansas) and Quade Green (Kentucky) but are beginning to form a class after starting the cycle off slow.

Sidibe averaged around 13 points and 11 rebounds last season, guiding St. Benedict’s to a 35-2 record in his first year with the school.

Haley calls for church bells to ring, prayer at noon in SC (charlotteobserver.com; AP)

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is calling for prayer vigils and church bells to ring across the state.

Haley is calling for the vigils at noon Tuesday to ask for continued strength and healing as South Carolina recovers from Hurricane Matthew.

Haley is also calling for prayers as the murder trial of North Charleston police officer Michael Slager continues and the death penalty trial for Dylann Roof in the killing of nine black Charleston church worshippers gets ready to start.

Haley says faith, prayer and helping neighbors have helped South Carolina make it through tough times in 2015 and 2016. She says two days before Thanksgiving is a good time for people to count their blessings.

South Carolina State could close for two years and have its athletic department suspended (SI.com)

Wednesday February 11th, 2015

The budget committee of South Carolina's House of Representatives voted Tuesday to close South Carolina State University temporarily in an attempt fix the school's financial troubles, according to The State.

The move would close the school entirely for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years and the school's athletic department would be suspended.

The school has a $10 million budget deficit and lawmakers were disappointed with the school's reluctance to balance the budget. The university's debts could rise as high as $100 million, the Associated Press reports.

"We are looking at a bankrupt institution," Rep. Jim Merrill said, according to The State. "There seems to be unwillingness to make the cuts that are necessary. ... No one takes any pleasure in recommending this."

SCSU is a historically black school founded in 1896. Its athletic teams compete in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. The school's football team won a share of the MEAC title last season.
