Welcome to Cyber Monday!

Cyber Monday is a marketing term for the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States. The term "Cyber Monday" was created by marketing companies to persuade people to shop online. The term was coined by Ellen Davis and made its debut on November 28, 2005 in a Shop.org press release entitled "'Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year".[1]

According to the Shop.org/Bizrate Research 2005 eHoliday Mood Study, "77 percent of online retailers said that their sales increased substantially on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a trend that is driving serious online discounts and promotions on Cyber Monday this year (2005)".

In 2015, Cyber Monday online sales grew to a record $2.98 billion, compared with $2.65 billion in 2014. However, the average order value was $128, down slightly from 2014's $160.[2]

The deals on Cyber Monday are online only and generally offered by smaller retailers that cannot compete with the big retailers. Black Friday generally offers better deals on technology, with nearly 85% more data storage deals than Cyber Monday. The past Black Fridays saw far more deals for small appliances, cutlery, and kitchen gadgets on average than Cyber Monday. Cyber Monday is larger for fashion retail. On the past two Cyber Mondays, there were an average of 45% more clothing deals than on Black Friday. There were also 50% more shoe deals on Cyber Monday than on Black Friday.[3]

Syracuse basketball players get 'a wake-up call' in loss to South Carolina
(PS; Ditota)

It had all been so easy.

Syracuse cruised through its first four games, outscoring opponents by an average of 86-53 in building its 4-0 record.

None of those teams ranked in the top 85 of Ken Pomeroy's advanced metrics. None of them offered any real Orange resistance.

South Carolina, coming off its 61-46 thrashing of Michigan, would be different. South Carolina would be a completely alien 2016-17 test.

"We met a good, tough team and we got punched in the face," SU point guard Frank Howard said. "At some point, I think every team needs that. And today, it was us. For the new guys, for me, for the old guys — we can't get comfortable. I think we got a little comfortable. We definitely, clearly weren't prepared. We've gotta come in watch film, come back and just get better."

Syracuse shot 32 percent in its 64-50 loss to the Gamecocks. The Orange was outrebounded 37-30 by a team that starts three guards and crowded Syracuse from the offensive boards. SU committed 17 turnovers. The Orange shot 16-of-26 (62 percent) from the free-throw line. South Carolina outscored SU 30-8 in the paint.

Syracuse Basketball: John Gillon & Frank Howard see floor together (TNIAAM; Szuba)

In the first half of yesterday’s game against South Carolina, Syracuse was having trouble getting dribble penetration against the Gamecocks’ defensive pressure. When an on-ball defender is in your shorts, the first thing any player worth his salt will do is blow by his man off the bounce. Similarly, off-ball offensive players who are overplayed by the defense should cut back door. This is basketball 101 — but easier said than done.

Syracuse struggled mightily against South Carolina’s defense. Make no mistake, this is a tremendous defensive team — the Gamecocks held No. 25 ranked Michigan to just 46 points on 19.2% shooting on Wednesday. That’s not a typo, Michigan shot just 19.2% from the floor against Frank Martin’s team.

With that in mind, as Syracuse struggled turning the ball over in the first half, Jim Boeheim elected to run Frank Howard and John Gillon together after the under eight minute media timeout. Once he did, the Orange went on a 5-0 run before Howard picked up his third foul and was forced to sit.

For most of the second half, Boeheim again opted to play his two point-guards simultaneously.

An early season loss can help Syracuse basketball in long term - The Juice Online (the juice; Dagostino)

Does Jim Boeheim have their attention now?

After coasting through the likes of Colgate, Holy Cross, Monmouth and South Carolina State while averaging 86 points per game, the Syracuse basketball team got throttled by a tough, defensive-minded South Carolina squad in what should serve as a wake-up call.

Before Saturday, it was easy. Too easy. And for a team with a lot of new parts looking for a new identity, it’s games like Saturday (not the first four) where teams find that identity. After scoring just 50 points, it seems they are still searching.

Now, let’s preface this by saying that Syracuse may or may not have the kind of talent to make a deep run in this season’s NCAA Tournament. But, previous Syracuse teams that have made long runs in March have had these kind of “wait, what just happened?” games.

As recently as last season, the Orange had a stretch of games that caused people to look around and wonder just what kind of team they had. Boeheim served his 9-game suspension for NCAA violations, leaving Mike Hopkins to take the helm. In what many (myself included) thought would be a seamless transition resulted in a 4-5 stretch that left the team scratching and clawing just to make the tournament. After sharpening their nails, they dug in and became the first 10-seed to reach the Final Four.

College men's basketball: Hayes, Happ lead No. 16 Wisconsin over... (duluthnewstribune.com)

Senior forward Nigel Hayes attacked the rim early and often in No. 16 Wisconsin’s 95-50 rout against Prairie View A&M.
Hayes scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Badgers to the victory on Sunday at the Kohl Center. Sophomore forward Ethan Happ contributed 12 points and senior guards Zak Schowalter and Bronson Koenig added 11 each.

Hayes delivered 13 first-half points for the Badgers, who shot 62.1 percent (18 of 29) from the field and had 24 points in the paint in the first.

Hayes and senior guard Bronson Koenig combined for 24 first-half points against the Panthers (2-4). The performance is a marked improvement from the pair’s last game, when the veterans combined for 10 points on 4 of 24 shooting in the Badgers’ loss last week to No. 4 North Carolina.

College basketball rankings: Surging South Carolina moves into Top 25 (and 1) (cbssports.com; Parrish)

South Carolina won 24 games before Selection Sunday last season but was still left out of the NCAA Tournament - partly because the Gamecocks accomplished little in the non-league portion of their schedule. They went 13-0 vs. non-league opponents but played, and thus beat, zero top-40 KenPom teams.

Predictably, the selection committee punished them for it.

South Carolina played in the NIT.

But such shouldn't be the case again this season, as long as Frank Martin's Gamecocks do well in the SEC, and that's because South Carolina already has two top-30 KenPom wins - specifically last Wednesday's 61-46 victory over Michigan that was followed by Saturday's 64-50 victory over Syracuse. In other words, the Gamecocks are 6-0 with multiple quality wins, which is enough to get them ranked 22nd in the updated CBS Sports Top 25 (and one). As a result, there are now three SEC schools - Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina - in the Top 25 (and one).

South Carolina's launch into the rankings caused Cincinnati, Notre Dame and Michigan State to all drop one spot, no fault of their own. And it pushed Wichita State out of the rankings to what would amount to the 27th spot, if there were such a thing.

The complete Top 25 (and one) is below.

Is Cyber Monday sales frenzy losing steam to earlier online deals? (PS; AP)

Cyber Monday may be in danger of losing its online sales title.

The Monday after Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest online shopping day of the year, but stores are releasing internet deals earlier, stretching them through the week, as well as making them available in stores. Shoppers looking for discounts spurred online sales on Black Friday to a new high.

During the holiday shopping weekend that kicks off on Thanksgiving and the day afterward known as Black Friday, more and more shoppers decide to skip the mayhem in stores and buy online. Consumers spent $3.34 billion shopping online on Friday, a 21.6 percent increase from the same day last year, according to Adobe Digital Insights, which tracks online retail transactions.

Online sales have also been stretching out more and more. Cartwheel, Target's digital app, started offering holiday deals including 50 percent off one toy per day on Nov. 1. Amazon started offering 35 days of Black Friday deals on Nov. 16. And Walmart kicked off its Cyber Monday deals at 12:01 a.m. EST Friday for the first time as it aimed to grab customers ahead of its competitors.

Lea Bishop shops online starting on Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday, but this year found many retailers had extensive pre-Black Friday deals. She found an iPad at Bestbuy.com for $625, at $150 off during the week before Thanksgiving. To Bishop, the convenience of online shopping is worth more than finding the best deal.

"It may not be the exact lowest price but it was a really good deal," she said. "You kind of have to weigh the 'get up early, stand in line and hope to be the first person there' with the 'Oh I can go buy it now,' even though it may be a little bit more expensive," she said.

Syracuse at Wisconsin, 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

Word to Jim Boeheim: This will be the only road trip outside the state of New York for the Orange in nonconference play. The Kohl Center doesn't take kindly to visitors, especially with the Badgers needing to regroup after posting an 0-2 record against ranked teams this season.

Wisconsin 65, Syracuse 61

No. 22 Syracuse at No. 17 Wisconsin, Tues. 7:30 p.m.

Two teams trending in the wrong direction. Let’s start with Syracuse, who couldn’t find a way to run offense against South Carolina’s half court pressure. It was not a promising performance from the Orange, who mustered all of 50 points as the issues with their point guard play – Franklin Howard and John Gillon – rose to the surface.

On the other hands, the Badgers are still trying to figure out how they are going to be able to turn Nigel Hayes back into an efficient basketball player. A year after getting criticized for settling for too many threes, Hayes is shooting more three per game at a worse clip than he did last season, just 29.0 percent. Someone’s streak has to snap on Tuesday.

  • Prediction: I think Syracuse gets the win. The length of their zone is give the Badgers trouble.
