Welcome to Opera Day!

If you have a passion for opera, then you probably know The Magic Flute by the famous Mozart and Fidelio by Beethoven. Or perhaps you’re not really a fan of operas. But have you enjoyed watching Sweeney Todd, Evita, The Phantom of the Opera, or Les Misérables? Did you know that these musicals have been written with operatic structures? Operas have been entertaining the audiences since the late 16 century. Opera Day is a chance for those who love operas to celebrate and an opportunity for others to begin to like opera too!

Brownell takes blame for Syracuse loss (theclemsoninsider.com; Shroat)

Clemson lost another close game, this time to Syracuse on a buzzer beater three-pointer. This is the second time the Tigers have lost a game 82-81 at home this year, adding another loss by five or less points to their resume, which now is at four.

The Tigers (13-10, 3-8 ACC) had 12 and eight point leads at different points in the game, but finishing is still a problem that has plagued them all year.

Speaking of finishing, what happened on the last play of the game?

After Clemson took the lead 81-79 on a Donte Grantham turnaround jumper, Syracuse came out of a timeout, drove toward the basket and dumped the ball out to a wide open Tyus Battle, who drained the game-winning three-pointer as time expired.

Clemson head coach Brad Brownell put the loss on his shoulders, saying there was a mistake on the final play.

“There was a mix up on the last play,” he said. “I don’t if it was the scorers table or my staff made a mistake. Obviously, it’s my responsibility.”

Brownell said he only had Sidy Djitte in the game to guard a player that was not actually on the court for the final play. When Djitte saw Syracuse center Tyler Lydon go towards the basket for what looked like a game-tying shot, he dropped off of Battle, something a perimeter player would not have done, and left the shooter wide open for the winning shot.

“I thought (Tyler) Roberson was still in the game for them, and he’s their best offensive rebounder so we had Sidy in their to make sure he didn’t tip it in,” said Browned. “Then you look out and he’s not in the game. We’re in trouble because he’s not used to guarding perimeter players and he leaves the shooter and you lose on a last-second shot.”

Clemson drops another home contest as Syracuse escapes at the buzzer, 82-81 (shakinthesouthland.com; Gordon)

There isn’t a whole lot that you can say about Sunday afternoon. It happened. Just ask Jay Ingles who had the misfortune of having to recap one of the worst losses in Clemson Basketball history. (We love you Jay) But one thing that you can say, is that blowout losses like that can bring out a team’s true character. Clemson managed to be competitive, but would throw away (literally) a chance at a badly needed home win as they fell to the Syracuse Orange 82-82, thanks to a buzzer beater three-pointer from a true freshman. Here is how it all unfolded.

Clemson would start out the game with a sense of urgency and a solid offensive game plan. The Tigers attacked the zone from the inside out utilizing Blossomgame from the baseline and Thomas in the paint and passing out to the perimeter. Clemson would open the game with an 11-5 run with three pointers from Donte Grantham and Avry Holmes off of post passes. Syracuse couldn’t seem to find the basket early, starting 2-of-7 from the field as the Clemson defense seemed to get the message about the importance of their effort on the defensive side of the ball.

As the first half progressed, it began to develop into a two-person game. Avry Holmes continued his red-hot shooting, starting 3-for-3 from the field, including 2 three pointers as the Tigers were clicking on all cylinders early. Syracuse followed the recipe that has led to its recent success in the past 4 games, as Andrew White III continued to shine. White hit consecutive three pointers to trim the Tiger lead to 24-17 with 8 minutes remaining. Despite shooting less than 30% from the field, White managed to keep the Tiger lead to less than 10 points.

Don’t Trust the Crooked, Man-to-Man Media (TNIAAM; Wall)

After a tremendous victory over the Clemson Tigers, the Syracuse Orange have now won five consecutive games to raise their record to 16-9 (8-4 in the ACC). This streak has pushed the Orange up to fourth place in the deepest conference in America. It’s a tremendous turnaround from December when Syracuse was talked about as one of the most disappointing teams.

However, since it’s February and certain man-to-man media members have to drive listeners to their radio shows, or clicks to their websites, we get the annual distortion of the facts. Sad! I mean just look at these:

#Cuse has softest in conference schedule in #ACC play #GT #Pitt #BC 2x for UVA/FSU/Duke all at home

— Doug Gottlieb (@GottliebShow) February 7, 2017
Oh I guess it was nice of the ACC to let Syracuse choose their opponents this season. At least that’s what the alt-zone media wants you to fall for. Then, when Syracuse wins with a great shot, I mean it really was a tremendous shot from Tyus Battle, who is doing some really great things and getting more recognition.

Thats a charge Mike Ortiz Jr. on Twitter

Look at that example of this biased viewpoint. Something goes well for the Orange and suddenly they are accused of cheating. Where’s the uproar for the calls that went Clemson’s way?

College Basketball ACC Power Rankings: Week 14 (fansided.com; Maikis)

FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES
Last week: 20-4, 8-3 ACC
Last rank: 7

The Seminoles got back on the winning track this week with blowouts over Miami and Clemson after dropping two straight bad ones. They looked comfortable throughout both games, as they won then by a combined margin of 66 points. They got balanced contributions against Miami, with four starters scoring in double digits. Against Clemson, star Dwayne Bacon got hot with 18 points in the first 15 minutes and led the way throughout as he finished by tying his career-high with 29 points on 10-14 shooting. Their defense was the star in both matchups, however, as they forced the two teams into a combined 36 turnovers. They play just one ranked team the rest of the way as they have an excellent chance to gain some serious momentum heading into the postseason. This week they play struggling NC State and Notre Dame teams, and if they keep up their recent form they will have a great chance to win both.

SYRACUSE ORANGE
Last week: 15-9, 7-4 ACC
Last rank: 5

Is anyone doubting Syracuse now? They have won four straight including two over top ten Florida State and Virginia teams. Their new pieces are finally starting to mesh together and they’ve got momentum on their side. Transfer John Gillon (43 points, 9 assists, 10-13 FGs, 9-10 3PT) lead the way to surviving Dennis Smith Jr.’s monster game for NC State. Fellow transfer Andrew White III added 28 against NC State and 23 in the win over Virginia. Freshman Tyus Battle chipped in 23 as well against the Hoos. All of this is without mentioning potential lottery pick Tyler Lydon, and with all that talent clicking, the Orange are a dangerous team going forward. They played at Clemson Tuesday night before this was written and then get Pittsburgh and Louisville later in the week. Picking up wins over lowly Clemson and Pitt will set the stage for a big-time showdown against a top-five Louisville team in the Carrier Dome.

Is The Syracuse Basketball Team Getting Love In Latest Mock Drafts? (insidetheloudhouse.com; Adler)

With an ever improving Syracuse basketball resume, the experts are changing their tune on whether the Orange are in the tournament picture.
The Syracuse basketball squad, following four straight wins, including two over top 10 teams, is starting to enter the conversation as it pertains to a possible NCAA Tournament berth.

What a difference two weeks make.

The Orange (15-9, 7-4 in conference play), heading in to its road showdown with Clemson on Tuesday night, finds itself projected to make the field of 68 in the most-recent mock brackets from CBS, NBC and USA Today.

Over at ESPN, meanwhile, Joe Lunardi has SU in his “Next Four Out” category, along with Georgetown and Michigan. I thoroughly dislike getting grouped alongside that pair of programs.

CBS’s Jerry Palm lists Syracuse in his “Last Four In,” along with fellow ACC counterpart Miami. Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are in the “First Four Out.” In total, Palm has 10 Atlantic Coast Conference representatives in his bracket.

Syracuse is a No. 11 seed in his field, and the ‘Cuse would square off in the East Region with Michigan, also a No. 11 seed, in the First Four. I actually welcome this match-up, as it gives the Orange an opportunity to exact revenge against the Wolverines for besting SU in the 2013 Final Four, a game which I attended. Sigh.

NBC’s Dave Ommen puts nine ACC members in his bracket, and Syracuse has one of the last four byes. Miami is among the “Last Four In.” Clemson is part of the “First Four Out,” while Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are in the “Next Four Out” grouping.

Rio Grande Opened in October 2016, Rio Grande is a newcomer to the Mexican dining scene in Central New York. Its spot on Oswego Street in Liverpool was a Carrols burger joint, before becoming a Burger King and later a pair of sub shops. In his review, dining critic Jared Paventi noted that while the service was spotty, the queso fundido appetizer "hit all the marks" and the house special fajitas, a mix of chicken, beef and pork, were wellspiced and tender.
