Beware the Ides of March!

The Ides of March (Latin: Idus Martiae, Late Latin: Idus Martii) is a day on the Roman calendar that corresponds to 15 March. It was marked by several religious observances and became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC.

Syracuse men’s basketball game day: Everything to know about North Carolina-Greensboro matchup (DO; Schwedelson)

UPDATED: March 14 at 5:15 p.m.

No. 1 seed Syracuse (18-14, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) hosts North Carolina-Greensboro (25-9, 14-4 Southern) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome in the first round of the National Invitation Tournament. This year marks the Orange’s first NIT appearance since 2008 and just the seventh under head coach Jim Boeheim.

Here are answers to your most pressing questions.

How can you watch the game? SU-UNCG will air on ESPN2. Below are channel listings based on provider.

• Verizon Fios: 574 (high-definition) and 74 (standard-definition)
• DirecTV: 209
• Dish Network: 144
• New Visions: 760 (high-definition) and 74 (standard-definition)

Beat writers predict Syracuse to beat UNC-Greensboro (DO; Staff)

UPDATED: March 14 at 2:45 p.m.

No. 1 seed Syracuse (18-14, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) starts off its NIT run against eighth-seeded UNC-Greensboro (25-9, 14-4 Southern) on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome.

Here’s how The Daily Orange beat writers think the game will unfold:

Connor Grossman (19-13)
Daycation
Syracuse 79, UNC-Greensboro 71

Only days after Jim Boeheim indirectly removed himself from Greenboro’s mayoral race, the veteran head coach is rewarded with a ridiculously ironic matchup in the first round of the NIT. This is a game and tournament Syracuse wanted no part of, but so long as SU’s playing in the Carrier Dome, it will be business as usual. If there’s any silver lining, Orange fans get a chance to see Tyler Lydon play at home again before he makes a decision on his NBA future.

Matt Schneidman (14-18)
Troll job
Syracuse 81, UNC-Greensboro 60

First off, it is absolutely hysterical that UNC-Greensboro is flying to Syracuse after Jim Boeheim’s “no value” comments. I’m sure the 72-year-old is having a good laugh about the pairing, as much as he will after the game when Syracuse cruises into the second round. It may not be the NCAA Tournament, but the Orange still wants to win, and it won’t have a problem doing so on Wednesday

Paul Schwedelson (20-12)
Nothing but business
Syracuse 79, UNC-Greensboro 58

This game will only be fun because Jim Boeheim trashed Greensboro after Syracuse lost in its first ACC tournament game. Other than that, the Orange will trounce the Spartans. UNCG won nine straight before its loss in the Southern Conference championship game, but count on SU playing well because the game will be played in the Carrier Dome, where Syracuse is 16-3 this season.

UNCG's first-round NIT basketball game at Syracuse postponed (greensboro.com; Mills)

The snow deepens, and the plot thickens.

UNC-Greensboro’s first-round game in the NIT at Syracuse was postponed early this afternoon, a decision made while the Spartans practiced inside the Carrier Dome.

Outside, a Nor’easter ravaged the city. Central New York remains under a winter storm warning through 8 p.m. Wednesday, and blizzard conditions already exist. The forecast calls for total snow accumulations of 18 to 26 inches and wind gusts of up to 40 mph.

The game is now scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, the first of an NIT tripleheader televised on ESPN2.

It was cold outside, and yet UNCG coach Wes Miller had a difficult time keeping his cool.

“We’ve really been left in the dark here and felt left out of the decision-making and details of what’s going on,” Miller said. “I didn’t find out that (postponing) was even possible until I read it on Twitter after our shootaround. That’s how I learned this was even a thought.”

The No. 8 seed Spartans (25-8) were supposed to play the top-seeded Orange (18-14) at 7 p.m. today. They left Greensboro at noon Monday, flying on a 30-passenger plane to get to Syracuse ahead of the Nor’easter.

“Obviously, we’ve been hearing about the storm,” Miller said. “But it’s supposed to go on for a couple of days. If we were here, obviously Syracuse is here, and the officials are here — it just did not cross my mind it could be postponed.

'Bathroom bill' costs hoops-crazed state NCAA games (SI; Jones)

Duke and North Carolina will open the NCAA tournament in Greenville, S.C., instead of Greensboro, N.C., because of the controversial "bathroom bill" that caused the NCAA to move the games from the Tar Heel State. Will the Big Dance return anytime soon?

This year, as they have been so many times in recent decades, the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Duke Blue Devils are among the favorites to win the NCAA tournament. Often their path to a national championship has begun in their shared home state, which has hosted NCAA tournament games 30 times in the past 38 years.

This year was supposed to be the 31st time, but the paths for UNC and Duke took an unexpected detour last fall. In September the NCAA yanked the first- and second-round tournament games away from Greensboro, N.C., and one month later moved them 190 miles away to Greenville, S.C., in light of North Carolina’s controversial anti-LGBT law.

It takes the Tar Heels out of North Carolina, where their NCAA tournament record is 33-1 all-time, and places them in a state where they’ve never played a postseason game. Duke, which is 34-6 in NCAA games played in North Carolina, has played just two games in South Carolina, both in 2002, which was the last time the Palmetto State was able to host NCAA tournament games.

South Carolina is itself just two years removed from the lifting of a politically related ban on hosting NCAA events. For 13 years, the state was ineligible to bid on hosting because the Confederate flag still flew above the Columbia statehouse. After nine black worshippers were killed in a Charleston church in a 2015 hate crime, the flag was removed, and the NCAA lifted the ban and allowed South Carolina back in the mix for tournament games.
