Welcome to Morse Code Day!

The History Of Morse Code Day
The year was 1836, and Samuel F.B. Morse was working on something with a pair of compatriots that would utterly change the way the world transmitted information. What they would develop would be the device and technology that would drive communication until the radio finally became fully developed years later. Even then, radio was often used to transmit Morse Code over long distances, as even weak signals could often carry a comprehensible message in Morse code. It also has the distinction of being a coded language that a human with the right experience can translate by ear, at speed, without a decoder.

While it was developed for English, the alphabet has frequently been modified for other languages, making its reach and use universal in nature. From then it has found its way into Aviation, Amateur Radio, and can even be transmitted by flashing lights, as any fan of media can tell you. Mirrors, flashlights, even bright spotlights have all been used to transmit information in this amazing and diverse code base. Perhaps the most amazing and unexpected use of this language is to help those with disabilities be able to communicate through simple tapping, or even through a simple skin buzzer. It truly is powerful and adaptive.

Syracuse basketball's Oshae Brissett officially signs his National Letter of Intent (cuse.com)

The Syracuse basketball program officially announced that it received a signed National Letter of Intent from Oshae Brissett on Tuesday, formally linking his future to SU.

The NLI officially binds Brissett to Syracuse, while guaranteeing him a full year of financial aid. It also prohibits other coaches from attempting to recruit him.

The 6-foot-8 Canadian is ranked from as high as No. 48 in the Class of 2017 by 247 Sports.com, while earning as low as a three-star rating from Scout. He becomes the third recruit to formally sign his NLI with SU for 2017, joining center Bourama Sidibe and point guard Howard Washington.

Brissett averaged 22.8 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists while playing for Athlete Institute Prep in Ontario.

While Syracuse's roster situation for next season remains in flux, with Class of 2017 members still being recruited, Brissett would currently be one of the leading contenders for playing time at small forward.

Who Will Replace SU Basketball’s Seniors? – Student Section Sports (studentsectionsports.com; Pollack)

After a rough end to the year, Syracuse men’s basketball finds itself optimistically looking towards next season with an urge to avoid heartbreak again. With many players departing from the team, ‘Cuse basketball is going to have a new look.

The departures from the team this year include graduate transfers John Gillon and Andrew White III, along with Tyler Roberson, Dajuan Coleman, and Tyler Lydon. With this group leaving, the team is left with a lack of depth at point guard, and a lack of size and physicality down low.

In terms of recruiting, ‘Cuse has secured players O’Shae Brissett, Bourama Sidibe, and Howard Washington. According to 247 sports, these three are all three-star recruits. Brissett is a long, athletic small forward with a high ceiling, Sidebe is a physical 6-9 power forward, and Washington is a skilled combo-guard. These three will add much needed depth to Syracuse, if not in the starting lineup.

While ‘Cuse has locked down three solid recruits, the recruiting process is still ongoing. Syracuse is targeting small forward Jordan Tucker and point guard Tremont Waters. Tucker is the more likely of the two to choose Orange, as he has supposedly narrowed down his list to a select few that includes Syracuse. Tucker’s game would complement Tyus Battle as his shooting capabilities would spread the floor for Syracuse. Waters is unlikely to join the team, but his addition would be valuable as Frank Howard may not be ready for the starting role.

With multiple rotation players departing from the team, the Orange will have a new, youthful look next year. So far, they have locked down three solid recruits, but it feels they are missing that “big-name” star; hopefully Jordan Tucker or Tremont Waters fills that void.

With Berry and Allen back, UNC and Duke in same position again – DeCock (newsobserver.com; DeCock)

Once again, Duke and North Carolina will be in the national-title chase, thanks in large part to the decisions over the past two weeks by Grayson Allen and Joel Berry to return in search of a second ring for each.

And once again, both teams will face the same questions:

Can Duke find a way to fit its veterans around a talented core of one-and-done freshmen?

Will North Carolina’s experience be enough to overcome the loss of some of its key players?

The decisions this week by Allen and Berry to return to school for their senior seasons dramatically changed both of those dynamics. And while both schools are still facing critical go-or-stay decisions by freshmen – Tony Bradley at North Carolina, Frank Jackson at Duke – and awaiting the college choices of some of the top remaining players – Kevin Knox at North Carolina, Knox and Trevon Duval at Duke – the landscape will be similar to last season regardless of those decisions.

Duke, with one-and-dones Wendell Carter and Gary Trent Jr. incoming, will once again try to find the right mix between talent and experience after a season that saw three players turn pro and two more transfer in the wake of an ACC title and second-round NCAA tournament exit. That scenario worked in 2015, with a truly unique freshman class that came in as a group and, minus Allen, exited as a group, but has been less successful otherwise, with the Blue Devils failing to make it out of the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament in 2012, 2014 and 2017 and making it to the Sweet 16 in 2016.

Clemson hoping new faces can help close the gap in ACC (espn; O'Neil)

Dabo Swinney, hot off a national championship, is a hero.

Brad Brownell kept his job.

Such is the disparate state of affairs at Clemson, where relevance comes with a complicated definition. Not that the Tigers are unique. Plenty of basketball programs across the country are fighting for air space and attention on their own campuses, dwarfed by the mighty shadow of the pigskin.

But this season the contrast is especially stark at Clemson. While Swinney basked in the after glory of that title, Brownell endured the scorch of the hot seat, keeping his gig only after athletic director Dan Radakovich put out a statement that included this sentiment: “We expect Brad to make changes in the program to better position us for success.’’

Take a look inside model hotel room, see progress at Destiny USA hotel (photos) (PS' photo gallery; Moses)

Hidden inside Destiny USA is a fully-furnished hotel suite with two queen beds, a bathroom and living area.

From the peep hole in the door to the towels on the sink, the room model shows what a hotel suite will look like at The Embassy Suites by Hilton Syracuse - Destiny USA, which is currently under construction.

The $48 million Destiny hotel is slated to open this fall and so far Destiny USA executives say the project is running ahead of schedule. A specific opening date will be announced later this year. The seven-story building sits at the southeast corner of Hiawatha Boulevard West and Solar streets, directly across Hiawatha Boulevard from the Destiny USA mall.

The 209-room hotel will be the first onsite at Destiny USA and will feature a restaurant, ballroom for events, an indoor-heated pool and a shuttle to transport guests to and from Destiny USA. A lighted walk will also be constructed and be connected to the crosswalk and the pedestrian bridge.

David Aitken, Destiny USA executive, said the driving force behind adding the onsite hotel was an increase in tourism, especially from international visitors, and repeated requests by local guests.

The hotel is being managed by Aimbridge Hospitality and is already booking events for later this year.

More than 350 windows, 120,000 pounds of glass and 94 miles of metal framing has been installed as construction continues.

To put some of the nervous Nellies' concerns to rest:

"It won't impact our deal with the ACC," Wildhack said. "Our deal runs through 2036. The ACC Network will launch as scheduled in 2019. I think ESPN will put all their muscle and support toward making sure the launch is a success because they are a partner and they have a vested interest in making sure the ACC Network is a financial success."
