National-Candied-Orange-Peel-Day-May-4-1024x512.jpg

Welcome to National Candied Orange Peel Day!

National Candied Orange Peel Day is observed annually on May 4th. Candied Orange Peels are a boiled, sliced and sugared treat. They are very popular with chefs and bakers as well as often used during the holidays in cookies, fruitcakes and other snacks. They can also be eaten by themselves.

A look at Syracuse basketball's 2018 targets - The Juice Online (the juice; Auger)

The Class of 2018 is chock full of typical Syracuse recruits as well. If SU doles out its three remaining scholarships for this year and no one from next year’s team transfers or leaves for the NBA, Boeheim would have one scholarship to award that it gets back based on how the NCAA doled out scholarship restrictions. If Battle and Thompson erupt into the players they project to be, both could depart early for the NBA. So Syracuse could have anywhere from one to four scholarships assuming Battle and Thompson both leave and Syracuse saves a scholarship from the Class of 2017. Here are five names in 2018 to keep an eye on.

Cole Swider

A 6-foot-8, 3-star power forward with range from beyond the arc might remind a few folks of Tyler Lydon. It also helps that he plays at St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, RI; the same school that produced former players Demetris Nichols and Michael Carter-Williams.

Nate Roberts

Another 6-foot-8 power forward, Roberts already plays at Brewster Academy. He and Wright would be teammates if the latter does follow through on plans for a prep year. Roberts currently is listed with “high” interest in Syracuse according to CuseNation.com.

Prentiss Hubb

This 4-star, 6-foot-3 point guard from Washington, DC recently listed Syracuse in his final six along with Kansas, Villanova, Maryland, Virginia, and Notre Dame.

Louis King

Standing at 6-foot-8, King’s a 5-star small forward at Hudson Catholic Regional High School in Jersey City, NJ. He also lists “high” interest in Syracuse according to CuseNation.com.

Three Reasons Why Jordan Tucker Will Pick Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.nwet; Aki)

It’s May 4th, and Syracuse still doesn’t have a top 100 recruit. That’s the storyline that has taken over the majority of the offseason amid the Orange’s disappointing postseason. While we at the Fizz have taken an in-depth look at why this year’s recruiting class can still be good, but in a different way, SU fans have gotten used to getting top tier recruits year-to-year and should expect nothing less from Jim Boeheim and his staff. With that being said, the Orange is still in hot pursuit of four star forward Jordan Tucker, who is also a consensus top 40 recruit. It was reported earlier in the week by Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters that Tucker is picking between SU and Georgia Tech in a decision that is expected shortly after the unofficial visit to Tech today. However, recent events and history favors the Orange in Tucker’s looming decision. Here are three reasons why:

Georgia Tech Just Signed A Similar Player

The Yellow Jackets received a commitment from Evan Cole, a 6-foot-8 forward whose dimensions are almost exactly the same as Tucker’s. You have to wonder if Josh Pastner saw the writing on the wall that it would take a miracle at Tucker’s unofficial visit to land one of the best players remaining on the market. Along with this, Tech is very invested in MJ Walker, who is a more highly-touted player than Tucker. The Yellow Jackets may be focusing more of their attention towards the guard since GT already has a pair of forwards in their 2017 recruiting class.

Syracuse Is Communicating All The Time

Adam Zagoria reported yesterday that Tucker hears from Syracuse “every day.” The Orange is in desperation mode right now, and Boeheim realizes this is his best chance at landing a top 100 guy for the coming year. Tucker was also very active on Twitter about his SU visit by posting a number of tweets about it as well as a picture of him in an Orange uniform, which he had to clear up to Syracuse fans that it was not a commitment quite yet. Along with that, Tucker has interacted with Matthew Moyer on Twitter about Moyer wearing Tucker’s #2. Hey Matt, wanna take one for the team and switch it up?

ACC has a long history of basketball villains (newsobserver.com; Morris)

The talented yet annoying Grayson Allen certainly earned his stripes this past season as the latest villain of ACC basketball. The Duke guard checked off all the boxes in gaining villain status from his outstanding play to his bizarre tripping incidents.

Still, there is little doubting that Allen has a long way to go over his final one or two seasons to gain the mischief-maker stature of Dave Budd, Dan Wells, Art Heyman and John Roche in ACC lore.

If you were wondering why the likes of Tyler Hansbrough, Christian Laettner and J.J. Redick do not appear on that list, it is because they also fell far short of the standard barriers for both engaging in dirty deeds and being subjected to excessive fan abuse.

Mostly, the villains of later years were disliked by opposing teams fans because they were exceptional basketball players, All-Americans all. Duke fans taunted Hansbrough because they believed it might somehow take some of the aggression out of his aggressive style of play. UNC fans still shake their collective heads over Redick’s uncanny accuracy from 3-point land.

As for Laettner, frankly, his villain status was in great part an ESPN creation. The vile repugnance toward Laettner did not gain strength until near the end of his Duke career, and most of that was on a national level. Not until he kicked a Kentucky player, then hit the game-winning shot against the Wildcats in a regional final game did fans really ante up in their dislike for him.

As for Allen, no one seemed to much notice him until he became a budding star during the 2015 Final Four. He elevated his game further this past season and earned All-ACC first-team standing.

Another microburst confirmed in Chenango County; winds up to 90 mph (PS; Coin)

A second microburst has been confirmed in Chenango County during Monday night's severe storms.

The National Weather Service said today a microburst with 80 to 90 mph winds whipped through 3.5 miles of countryside northeast of the village of Oxford. The winds peeled off a roof of a home on Pratt Road and knocked down trees that destroyed a garage and damaged a house nearby.

The weather service had previously confirmed an even stronger microburstMonday night near Norwich. That one had winds of up to 100 mph, and sheared off or uprooted hundreds of trees.

Weather service investigations showed that the path of damage in both areas lay in a straight line, rather than in a curve, which would have indicated a tornado. A microburst is a strong blast of air moving downward, with a path less than 2.5 miles wide and a duration of less than five minutes.

The Oxford microburst hit about 8:20 p.m. Monday. The path was up to a mile wide and 3.5 miles long, the weather service said.

Severe storms ripped through Chenango and Otsego counties Monday night, knocking trees onto homes and cars. One pine tree nearly split a trailer in half, forcing a father to climb out a hole to pull his 2-year-old son from the trailer.
