Welcome to Great Lakes Awareness Day

The Great Lakes (also called the Laurentian Great Lakes,[1] or the Great Lakes of North America, French: les Grands-Lacs) are a series of interconnected freshwater lakes located primarily in the upper mid-east region of North America, on the Canada–United States border, which connect to the Atlantic Ocean through the Saint Lawrence River. Consisting of Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron (or Michigan–Huron), Erie, and Ontario, they form the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth, containing 21% of the world's surface fresh water by volume.[2][3][4]The total surface is 94,250 square miles (244,106 km2), and the total volume (measured at the low water datum) is 5,439 cubic miles (22,671 km3).[5] Due to their sea-like characteristics (rolling waves, sustained winds, strong currents, great depths, and distant horizons) the five Great Lakes have also long been referred to as inland seas.[6] Lake Superior is the second largest lake in the world by area, and Lake Michigan is the largest lake that is entirely within one country.[7][8][9][10] The southern half of the Great Lakes is bordered by the Great Lakes Megalopolis.[11]

How Sid Wilson Could Change Syracuse’s 2017 Season – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

The Brewster Academy pipeline to Syracuse could feature another player as soon as next season. Four star forward Sid Wilson has reclassified into the Class of 2017 and has dwindled his choices down to six schools, including Syracuse. Among the half dozen, UConn, Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech and St. Johns join SU on Wilson’s list. With Andrew White graduating, the Orange in pursuit of a pair of forwards, the other being Jordan Tucker. Wilson is widely regarded as a top 100 recruit in the Class of 2018 before he reclassified, something Syracuse is without for the upcoming class.

While it is getting late in the process, we saw SU snag players late in the process last year with Taurean Thompson (another Brewster Academy product) and Andrew White. Jim Boeheim has proven that he can win the recruiting game of chicken and secure players late in the process, while others will back out as the school year comes closer.

Wilson is an athletic player who is a great slasher to the hoop, similarly to Tyus Battle’s game. Wilson’s jumper is not as polished as Battle’s. But coming into college, Battle’s jumper was not one of his strengths, however he quickly changed that by establishing himself as one of the Orange’s best shooters from deep. Unlike Battle, Wilson thrives above the rim and could bring an element of excitement to the Orange that has been lacking in recent memory.

Duke moves forward after recruit Kevin Knox picks Kentucky (charlotteobserver.com; Wiseman)

Duke pitched big things, based on the program’s big history, to Kevin Knox yet still struck out.

The 6-8, 203-pound forward from Tampa, a five-star recruit with plenty of athleticism, could have fit right in with Duke’s list of one-and-done wing players like Jabari Parker, Justise Winslow, Brandon Ingram and Jayson Tatum.

All were forwards with perimeter skills. All stayed one season at Duke and were first-round picks in the NBA (except Tatum, who is projected to be a first-round pick next month).

But Knox passed on a chance to join that prestigious list, instead committing to play at Kentucky when he made his announcement on Saturday night.

Knox made his commitment news on Twitter. Later, on the same venue, Ingram posted his feelings.

“High school kid Knox would’ve been perfect in that role.. Position-less,” Ingram wrote.

NYDOT warns I-690 drivers of 'significant' travel impacts from bridge project (PS; Hannagan)

If you drive Interstate 690 on the east side of Syracuse you might want to look for an alternative route for the next two years.

The New York State Department of Transportation warns motorists that the $65 million Interstate 690 bridge replacement project will have a "significant impact" on travel on the east side of Syracuse during the project.

The state is replacing bridges that take the interstate over Teall Avenue and Beech Street. As a result, drivers can expect slow moving traffic on I-690, Burnet Avenue and Erie Boulevard for the duration of the project, the DOT warns.

The work will cost $11 million less than the original estimate of $74 million.

NYSDOT said its traffic signal crews will adjust traffic signal timing as necessary, but motorists should expect heavy traffic on detour routes during certain periods. Motorists traveling through the area should plan for extra travel time or consider alternate routes, the DOT said.

A few things will be missing when the work is completed. The DOT is taking three buildings by eminent domain for the project-- one at 828 Burnet Ave. and two at 204 N. Beech St. Five billboards will also be removed, four on the north side and one on the south side of the highway.
