Welcome to National Root Canal Appreciation Day!

Tooth pain is not a laughing matter, and for anyone who has experienced that discomfort prior to having treatment from an endodontist, Root Canal Appreciation Day is a big, big event. For teeth that have been damaged or irritated to the point of infection, the root canal procedure not only prevents worsening or abscess, it also preserves the tooth and maintains the integrity of the natural bite. Don’t worry; there’s no need to rush out for an unnecessary root canal just to celebrate the day. Recognizing the importance of dental health and its connection to overall health is enough. Root Canal Appreciation Day can be honored by acknowledging the dental specialists who relieve tooth pain and take care of smiles, and by celebrating the resilience of our teeth and their enduring ability to keep on chewing and keep on smiling.

East Carolina transfer Elijah Hughes moves up visit to Syracuse (PS; Waters)

Elijah Hughes, a 6-foot-6 transfer from East Carolina University, has moved up his visit to Syracuse, according to a source.

Hughes will visit Syracuse on Wednesday and Thursday, the source said.

Hughes had previously been scheduled to visit Syracuse on May 16-18. The source did not know how this would affect Hughes' other scheduled visits to Seton Hall this week and Iona next Monday.

Hughes, a native of Beacon, N.Y., averaged 7.8 points per game for East Carolina as a freshman. He played 20.5 minutes per game for the Pirates.

As a transfer, Hughes would have to sit out the 2017-18 season. He would then have three years' of eligibility remaining.

Hughes played at Kennedy Catholic High School, but transferred to South Kent (Conn.) Prep for his senior year. At South Kent, Hughes played alongside current Syracuse forward Matthew Moyer.

Undecided forward Jordan Tucker to visit Duke (greensboro.com; Wilkerson-New)

It didn’t take long for Duke to step up its pursuit of another top recruit.

Days after the Blue Devils missed out on forward Kevin Knox, Duke extended a scholarship offer to Jordan Tucker, a four-star forward in the class of 2017.

Tucker took to Twitter on Monday night to announce the news, along with an official visit planned for Wednesday.

Tucker, a 6-7, 207-pound forward from Marietta, Ga., is ranked No. 40 in the ESPN 100 and No. 77 per 247Sports.

Before the offer from Duke, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Villanova were considered the leaders to land his services for next season.

He also shared his thoughts on the fact that Duke hadn’t offered until Knox announced his decision to go to Kentucky on Saturday night.

Several ACC teams covet UNCW transfer C.J. Bryce for his scoring punch - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

Everyone, get ready to know the name C.J. Bryce. The sophomore guard has been granted his release from UNC Wilmington and plans to transfer. Thanks to Bryce’s connection with new NC State coach Kevin Keatts, who coached Bryce for two seasons, and the program’s fluid roster situation, the Wolfpack seems like a logical fit.

However, NC State is not the only ACC team after Bryce’s services. Virginia, Georgia Tech, Miami and Wake Forest have all reportedly expressed interest in the first-team All-CAA performer. Here is why a handful of ACC clubs are eager to add Bryce to their roster.

Scoring Machine
The Seahawks finished the 2017 season in the top 20 nationally in offensive efficiency, per KenPom.com; that’s an impressive feat for Keatts. Senior forward Chris Flemmings was the only player to spend more time on the court than Bryce. The sophomore averaged a tidy 17.4 points per game on an efficient true shooting rate of 55.3 percent.

According to Synergy Sports, Bryce shot a solid 34.8 percent on catch-and-shoot opportunities. He was especially good, however, out of the pick-and-roll. As a shooter in pick-and-rolls, Bryce shot a sizzling 46.6 percent. He scored 0.9 points per possession, which ranks No. 74 in Division I of players who have recorded at least 100 pick-and-roll possessions.

Bryce is a quality distributor out of this action as well. When he was a passer in pick-and-rolls, Wilmington scored 1.15 points per possession and shot 55 percent from the field. Most of this was built on big man Devontae Cacok, who lead the country in two-point field-goal percentage (79 percent) and ranked No. 1 nationally in points per possession as a roll man (1.68).

The ACC is poised for a historically good NBA Draft in 2017 - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

In the latest DraftExpress 2017 NBA mock draft, nine ACC players are projected to go in the first round. If that does in fact come to fruition, it would be the highest number of ACC players ever selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. It would also be a single-season record for first-round draft picks from a basketball conference.

The ACC, which was founded in 1953, has produced at least one draft pick in every season of its existence. In total, the No. 1 overall pick has come from the ACC on 10 different occasions. The most recent example of this was Duke’s Kyrie Irving back in 2011.

Eight is great
The previous record for most ACC players taken in the first round stands at eight; back in 1995, eight of the first 29 picks all came from the ACC.
  • Joe Smith, Maryland
  • Jerry Stackhouse, North Carolina
  • Rasheed Wallace, North Carolina
  • Cherokee Parks, Duke
  • Bob Sura, Florida State
  • Randolph Childress, Wake Forest
  • Travis Best, Georgia Tech
  • Cory Alexander, Virginia

Son of Skaneateles golf star emerges as strikeout king in Section III baseball (PS; Webb)

The son of one of Central New York's most famous golfers is making his mark on a different sports platform - baseball.

Sophomore Cregg Scherrer of Skaneateles High School has blossomed into one of Section III's most dominant pitchers.

On Tuesday, the left-hander got his fifth win of the season, striking out 12 and giving up just two hits in leading the Lakers to an 8-0 victory over Solvay, the defending Class B section champion. The losing pitcher was Jake Dippold, the 2016 All-CNY Player of the Year. Dippold gave up one run in three innings of work.

Scherrer is the son of Tom Scherrer, a 1989 graduate of Skaneateles High School who won $4 million in prize money as a professional golfer between 1992 and 2009. Scherrer, who had one PGA Tour victory , was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

The Scherrers moved from North Carolina to Skaneateles before last baseball season. Cregg and his brother Tommy, a junior pitcher, are key reasons the Lakers (8-3 overall, 5-1 in the league) are contenders for the Class B Section III title this season.
