Kersey: Technology makes ACC basketball officials more accountable (dailypress.com; Teel)

After working Duke’s last-second victory over Virginia in 2016, veteran ACC basketball official Bryan Kersey joined his son and others for dinner at a sports pub. It didn’t take long for the game’s provocative finish to flash on the big screens.

Did Grayson Allen travel before his game-winning shot? Was he fouled? Referees called neither.

As the replay showed Allen in mid-air, then his toe touching the ground with the ball on his fingertips, Kersey turned to his son and suggested a hasty exit out the back door.

“It’s easy to referee when you’re slowing everything down,” Kersey said Monday as he wryly recounted that evening to a seminar at the National Sports Media Association’s annual convention.

This is basketball’s alleged offseason, but officiating has become as year-’round as recruiting.

Oregon tournament alters ACC-Big Ten routine (journalnow.com; Wilkerson-New)

The made-for-television ACC-Big Ten Challenge is expanding, but it’s not all about television.

Once a two-night series of games televised by ESPN, the challenge was expanded to three nights in 2014 and a fourth night was added this season.

A major reason?

Four teams — Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina and Ohio State — will need two days off after playing in the PK80 tournament in Portland, Ore., Nov. 23-26. A tournament years in the making, 16 of college basketball’s top programs will play in two separate brackets in honor of Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday and his contributions to college basketball.

According to Paul Brazeau, the ACC’s associate commissioner for men’s basketball operations, a two-day window for preparation is standard for the conference.

That means the four teams participating in the PK80 won’t be available until Nov. 29.

SummerCuse Day 33: Take a bite of Cazenovia at the 20 | East Night Market (PS; Pucci)

Today looks like the only dry day this week in Central New York, so you'll have no problem shopping and dining outside at the 20 | East Night Market in Cazenovia.

The market runs from 6 to 9 p.m., the perfect time to grab dinner from the Stockyard Bar-B-Q and seafood food truck and browse from local vendors including Peaks Coffee Company, Cazenovia Cut Block, Syracuse Salt Company and many more.

See the full list of participating vendors.

In addition to the food and crafts, the market will feature live music by Jimmy Golub and Kia Worell.

Temperatures will remain below normal much of the week with only Wednesday expected to be dry.

Where: 4157 Midstate Lane, Cazenovia.
When: Wednesday, June 28, from 6 to 9 p.m.
How much: Free to browse.

What to know:

  1. The market is held on the last Wednesday of each month. Future markets are scheduled for July 26 and August 30.
  2. Head back to Cazenovia Friday night for Friday Night Lite, a kick-off to Fourth of July weekend held at 20 | East's downtown location at 85 Albany St.
  3. For more info, visit 20-east.com.
Back-up plan:

The good weather will surely be a relief for Beak & Skiff Apple Orchards, who host progressive bluegrass band Yonder Mountain String Band tonight. The band got its start in Colorado, but are frequent guests of Central New York, having played concerts at the F Shed, Westcott Theater and Paper Mill Island, as well as three trips to Utica's Saranac Brewery as part of the brewery's summer concert series from 2011 to 2013.

The concert is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Advance tickets are $25.
