Welcome to National Tattoo Day!

The practice of tattooing is almost as old as humanity. Frequently observed by archeologists studying ancient Egypt as an art form popularized by many women of the time, The Smithsonian reported that tattoos have been discovered on human remains that date back as far as 3000 B.C., largely believed to serve therapeutic purposes in a similar vein to acupuncture today.

However, it wasn't until centuries later that the practice made its way to the U.S. by way of Europe. PBS tells us that 18th century explorers to Polynesia discovered natives who practiced the art, and many returned to their home continent with unique souvenirs inked into their skin. The Civil War was a prime breeding ground for the art of tattooing, and many of the first modern professional tattoo artists originated during this time.

Syracuse Orange Basketball: Darius Bazley scouting report | isportsweb (isportsweb.com; Carpenter)

Darius Bazley, the number 32 recruit in ESPN’s top 100 2018 recruits, has committed to play for Jim Boeheim. Bazley is a 6-foot-8 foreword from Cincinnati, Ohio, who was originally committed to play for the home state Ohio State Buckeyes. After decommitting from the buckeyes, schools such as Florida, Louisville, Georgetown, Saint Louis, and Toledo jumped at the opportunity to have Bazley play for them.

Bazley fits the mold of a typical Boeheim recruit, he is a long, athletic wing who will make an impact immediately on defense and has the potential to be an impact offensive player. Bazley is a similar player to Jerami Grant in the amount of physical talent he has, but is raw, and will need time to develop the finer parts of his game.

Bazley sees himself as a long guard, or a forward at Syracuse, and believes he can be impactful on both offense and defense. The four star recruit decommitted from Ohio State looking for a “bigger stage”, and for a place that will help him reach his goal of making it to the NBA.

Bazley is considered to be an all around player, as he doesn’t do anything great, but he does just about everything well. If Bazley can extend his jumpers range to behind the arc, he could become a problem to guard for opposing teams, due to his size, athletic ability and his ability to pull up from mid range. He is a prototypical Syracuse recruit, as Boeheim continues to focus on players to fit his 2-3 zone, more than conforming to the new brand of high scoring, three-point shooting basketball.

Another 2018 SU Football Commit Wants To Play Basketball – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Over the past month, we have seen a lot of crossover between the Orange football and basketball teams. It started when 2018 SU football commit Taj Harris announced he also wants to play for Jim Boeheim. Dino Babers said at this week’s ACC Media day that he wants to “play basketball on turf” and showed off his hoops knowledge by comparing his offense to the Showtime Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. Babers also praised Boeheim at ACC Media Day and even said that the Hall of Fame coach helped him out earlier this year by meeting with a football recruit while Babers was away.

Now, there is a new development in the relationship between the two sports. 2018 football commit Trill Williams told the Fizz that he intends to try out for the Syracuse basketball team when he arrives to campus. This would be an interesting twist for the Orange’s 2018 basketball roster. Not only would Harris and Williams not count against the scholarship limit (granted their playing time would be sparse at best), but Boeheim’s son, Buddy, is on Syracuse’s radar and also would not put a dent in the scholarship numbers.

Looking at Williams’ case, it is a little different at the moment than Harris’. First off, Williams told The Fizz that he has not been in contact with the Orange’s basketball staff, while Harris has met with SU assistant coach Adrian Autry about joining the hoops squad. Williams has not talked to Harris about playing basketball, but says it “would be cool if we both made the team.”

•RECRUITING PROFILE• Jalen Carey- CG Harlem native. Quick, explosive combo guard that plays on both ends of the floor. Knows how to attack the rim and can shoot the ball, too.
➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ How does he fit?
Carey would step in and play the point guard role off the bench along with Howard Washington. Frank Howard would be in his senior season and Geno Thorpe would have exhausted his college eligibility, so minutes will be open for Carey's freshman campaign. Even more so, if Frank Howard decides to transfer there will be a starting point guard spot available (Howard recently thought about transferring after last season). If he wants to be taken under Coach Boeheim's wings and the rest of the coaching staff, it could help for a successful college career, and hopefully reach the NBA. He recently took an unofficial visit to Syracuse about a month ago, so it'll be interesting to see if he wants to stay close to his hometown of Harlem.

Pitt AD Heather Lyke: ACC Network calls for ‘major investment’ (post-gazette.com; Batko)

As preparations take shape for the ACC Network, Heather Lyke envisions that Petersen Events Center will soon have a new look, too.

During the second half of the ACC’s annual football kickoff event Friday morning, Pitt’s athletic director shared some insight on her department’s planning process for what the conference hopes will be a boon of a new linear television channel.

“It’s a massive undertaking, and also incredibly exciting,” Lyke said of Pitt’s role as one of 15 campuses readying for the launch of the ACC Network in 2019. “We have a major investment. There’s infrastructure costs, there’s infrastructure pieces to it, there’s personnel pieces to it.”

While the channel will debut in fall 2019, each individual school must be ready to go by fall 2018. For Pitt and its ACC brethren, that means putting money into new or upgraded studios and figuring out how to best produce original content in-house.

That also means creating space for those new facilities, and Lyke and her staff see an area where it makes sense to expand. Currently, they’re designing the “back-of-the-house studio” but plans for the “front of the house” place it in the main atrium at Petersen Events Center, near the escalators and next to the team merchandise store.

“The renderings are drawn up pretty sharp. I think it’ll give the public and our fans and our students and our community an opportunity to see what goes into the production of the network,” Lyke said. “And to have a studio where — I don’t know that it’s going to be ‘The Today Show,’ but something similar — where people can feel connected and a part of it is going to be something that’s a unique feature of the new Petersen Center.”

All smiles for closing day of the Syracuse Nationals 2017 Gomez)

As the 18th Annual PPG Syracuse Nationals Car Show came to a close Sunday afternoon, many were glad the weather held up for most of the weekend.

While it only rained for a few hours on the event's opening days, the heat and humidity put a damper on much of the first day.

Norm Snyder, who sells wine slushies at the event, says he thinks some people stayed home on Friday, but that the rest of the weekend went really well. "The weather we had on Friday hurt us," he said. "Other than that, it was a phenomenal show. They do a good job."

Others like John Carnowski from Brewerton missed the rain completely. He's been coming to the show for about 15 years and brought his 1957 Chevy Bel Air that he bought in 1976 for only $35 with him. Like many others who avoided the first day's bad weather, he arrived on Saturday and enjoyed seeing all the classic cars scattered throughout the NY State Fairgrounds. "It was great. The weather held up about as nice as it could, for Syracuse anyways," Carnowski said.

Overall aside from Friday's heavy rain and the very light drizzles the rest of the weekend, the event went without incident.

While many with canopies and lawn chairs lounged on the grass, others spent their down time seated at any of the more than dozen food vendors. The deck at the West End Bar & Grille, which will be open for 2017 despite an unclear future, was filled with visitors enjoying drafts throughout most of the weekend.
