Welcome to 44 Days Until SU Football Starts!

Number 44 at Syracuse University is one of the most fabled numbers ever associated with a college football program. Since 1954, 11 players have worn the number and three have earned All-American honors. Those three—Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, and Floyd Little—rank among the finest running backs ever to play the college game.

The number 44 came to mean so much to Syracuse University, that years ago it changed its phone prefix to 443 and ZIP code to 13244. Those numbers remain, but no Orange football player will wear 44 again. In 2005, SU retired the number and the jersey now proudly hangs in the Carrier Dome.

ACC off-season Power Rankings
1

DUKE BLUE DEVILS
RECORD: 28–9
The Blue Devils lose all five of their end-of-season starters, which would be a crippling blow to almost any other team. But Grayson Allen is back for his senior year, and Duke welcomes in the nation’s No. 2 recruiting class, including five-stars Trevon Duval, Wendell Carter and Gary Trent.

2

LOUISVILLE CARDINALS
RECORD: 25–9
Losing both Donovan Mitchell and Jaylen Johnson to the NBA draft hurts, but the Cardinals still have plenty of talent on board for 2017–18. Quentin Snider and Deng Adel return, and Ray Spalding and V.J. King could be breakout candidates.

3

NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS
RECORD: 33–7
Justin Jackson’s departure was expected, but losing Tony Bradley after one season was a significant blow to UNC’s frontcourt, which graduated Kennedy Meeks and Isaiah Hicks. All eyes will be on Joel Berry II to lead the offense.

4

MIAMI (FL) HURRICANES
RECORD: 21–12
The strong returning backcourt duo of Ja'Quan Newton and Bruce Brown will be joined by incoming five-star guard Lonnie Walker and four-star guard Chris Lykes. With Kamari Murphy gone, rising sophomore Dewan Huell will need to step up down low.

5

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
RECORD: 26–10
Bonzie Colson returning for his senior year was huge for the Fighting Irish, as he and point guard Matt Farrell form a strong offensive tandem. Top-50 guard D.J. Harvey is Notre Dame’s lone incoming freshman.

SummerCuse Day 54: K-Rockathon roars back into Syracuse (PS; Pucci)

After a one-year hiatus, K-Rockathon is back in Syracuse.

Metal groups Korn and Stone Sour headline the festival, which will also feature Skillet, YelaWolf, Ded and Red Sun Rising. Glen Street, a Utica-area rock band that won KRockathon's Battle of the Bands, will serve as the opener.

K-Rockathon got its start in 1996 at Vernon Downs Racetrack and included the likes of Butthole Surfers, The Verve Pipe, Poe, Seven Mary Three, Reverend Horton Heat, Howlin' Maggie, Toadies and Guster--who still went by Gus at the time.

Since then, K-Rockathon has seen the likes of Third Eye Blind, Sum 41, Papa Roach, Evanescence and many others.

Where: Lakeview Amphitheater, 490 Restoration Way, Geddes.

When: Wednesday, July 19, at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the parking lots open at 3 p.m.

How much: Both lawn spots and pavilion seats in the 300 sections start at $25. Four-packs of lawn seats are available for $75.

What to know:
  1. Avoid paying $5 for a bottle of water and bring your own. Each concert-goer is allowed one factory-sealed water bottle up to one gallon.
  2. Both the orange and pink parking lots will be open. Shuttles will run between the pink lot and the main gate.
  3. Phat Kat Foods, Toss 'n' Fire Wood-Fired Pizza and The Salt City Food Truck will be on hand serving food.
  4. Don't be stuck paying $12.50 for a 24-ounce beer. $4 12-ounce "value drafts" are available from at least one beer tent.
