Welcome to National Junk Food Day!

Each year on July 21 we observe National Junk Food Day. This day is dedicated to the foods everyone loves to snack on. Junk foods by definition are usually high in fats, sugars, salt and calories, and contain very little nutritional value.

Celebrate by consuming your favorite junk food. Post on social media using #NationalJunkFoodDay.

You can also celebrate by taking a walk or doing some yard work to burn off those extra calories.

SU Basketball update: SU offers another 2019 recruit, Marek Dolezaj excels in Romania – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)

Syracuse basketball is off the court (save Boeheim’s Army) for another five months, but the Orange continues to make noise on the recruiting trail as the summer rolls on. Last week, Jim Boeheim offered Tyus Battle’s little brother Khalif, and this week Syracuse gave another 2019 recruit a chance to play in the Dome. Overseas, incoming freshman Marek Dolezaj has been filling up the box score in the FIBA U-20 European Championships.

Wednesday, ’s Corey Evans announced that the Orange had offered 2019 guard Jalen Lecque. Lecque still has two seasons of high school ball to play before heading to college, but he has already drawn attention from schools across the nation. Lecque’s other ACC offers are Miami, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, and he also has been offered by Florida, Georgia, Connecticut, USC, Rutgers and others. In total, he already has over 25 offers to his name.

247Sports’ composite rankings put Lecque at four stars and the No. 5 point guard in the 2019 class, No. 32 in the class overall. He lives in Arden, North Carolina and attends the Christ School in Asheville, but is originally from the Bronx. If Syracuse were to get into a battle with Duke or UNC down the road, the New York background could help the Orange keep pace. Lecque hasn’t announced any frontrunners at this point in his recruitment.

Marek Dolezaj has already pledged his allegiance to the Orange, but still has some work to do overseas before heading to the Hill this fall. Dolezaj is playing with the Slovakian team in the U-20 European Championships in Romania, and has been the silver lining in a struggle for the team. In four games, he has averaged over 18 points and four rebounds per game. He leads Slovakia, who went 1-3 and did not advance in the tournament, in those two categories as well as steals (1.8) and blocks (1.2). Against Russia Wednesday, he scored 28 points on 6-14 shooting from the field. He is clearly the star of the team.

Four-star guard Jalen Carey talks recruiting, Indiana (insidethehall.com; Bozich)

One of the nation’s top combo guards continues to hear from Indiana.

Jalen Carey, who plays at Immaculate Conception in New York and for the NJ Playaz on the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) circuit, was one of the country’s fastest rising players this spring.

Carey, a 6-foot-3 guard, added offers from IU, Kansas, Syracuse and several others due to his strong play in the two April evaluation periods.

After wrapping up EYBL last week, Carey is playing this week at the Oladipo Skills Academy at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.

It’s the latest stop on what’s been a busy spring and summer for Carey, who also played in the prestigious NBPA Top 100 Camp last month at the University of Virginia.

“I just learned I’ve got to be able to play with other people,” Carey told Inside the Hall’s Jacob Savage last week at the Peach Jam. “There’s always going to be people as good as me, so learn not to be selfish and be an all-around player. I learned so much from that camp (NBPA top 100). It has helped me throughout this (EYBL) session.”

The next step in the recruiting process for Carey will be setting up visits next month and into the fall. Carey told Inside the Hall that he plans to begin those trips in late August.

According to Carey, Indiana has remained in contact since extending a scholarship offer on April 24.

ACC Releases Men's Basketball Conference Match-Ups (nbc29.com)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has announced the 18 conference matchups for each of its 15 men’s basketball teams for the 2017-18 season.

The matchups released today designate the 18-game home and away opponents for the upcoming season. Specific dates and times for each game will be announced later this summer after selections by the league’s television partners are finalized.

The 2018 ACC Tournament is scheduled for March 6-10 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

In June, the matchups and dates for the 19th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge were announced. This year’s Challenge is to be played over a four-day span, November 27-30. The ACC won nine of the 14 games in last year’s competition and now owns an 11-5 advantage in the nation’s premier challenge event.

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games of the Challenge. All games will also be available via the ESPN app. The pairings and dates for the 2017 Big Ten/ACC Challenge can be accessed on the following link: Matchup Dates for 2017 Big Ten-ACC Challenge Announced | News

Last April, North Carolina claimed the 17th NCAA championship by a current ACC member school – and the eighth in the last 17 years. The ACC is the only league to have placed at least one team in the Final Four each of the last three years, and its 47 collective NCAA Tournament wins over that time span are 19 more than any other conference.

Led by Duke’s Jayson Tatum, the third overall selection by the Boston Celtics, the Atlantic Coast Conference set a record with 10 first round selections in the 2017 NBA Draft. Overall, the ACC tied with the Pac-12 with 14 total selections, followed by the Big 12 (6), Big Ten (4), SEC (4), American Athletic (3), Big East (3), West Coast (2) and the Horizon (1).

The regular-season ACC matchups for the 2017-18 season are listed below:

Shoppers continue browsing at MacKenzie-Childs Barn Sale despite rainstorm (PS; Williams)

On the first day of the three-day MacKenzie-Childs Barn Sale, spirits have been high, despite a brief rainstorm that passed through the area.

Reports of thunderstorms sweeping through Western NY, and even a tornado warning this afternoon, had the potential to shut down the popular furniture and home goods sale. But the line for the large-scale market, with bargains, food and drinks, only increased in size, even as the umbrellas came out.

Regina Boyle, from Massachusetts, is here for the first time with her daughter, Natalie, and her friend Geane Connor from Rochester.

"We left Boston at 6:30 this morning and drove here," Boyle said. "We stood out in the rain on line and it's awesome. It's a lot of fun."

Huge MacKenzie-Childs barn sale draws thousands nationwide

Boyle and her daughter, whom she called a shopper-in-training, are coming back early tomorrow morning. But after assessing the crowds and bargains today, they have a plan.

"It'll be just as crowded, so one of us will stand in the checkout line, while the other shops around," Boyle said.

The barn sale is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from July 20-23 in the village of Aurora.
