Welcome to National Ice Cream Sandwich Day!

The original ice cream sandwich sold for a penny in 1900 from a pushcart in the Bowery neighborhood of New York. The vendor, who was never identified in the article printed in papers across the nation, sandwiched the ice cream between milk biscuits. Soon, push carts popped up around the city and country during the summer months selling the portable treats.

The modern version of the ice cream sandwich was invented by Jerry Newberg in 1945 when he was selling ice cream at Forbes Field. There are pictures from the early 1900s, “On the beach, Atlantic City”, that show Ice Cream Sandwiches were popular and sold for 1 cent each.

There are alternatives to the classic ice cream sandwich using chocolate cookies, oatmeal cookies or a rice crispy wafer in place of the original chocolate one.

Ice cream sandwiches are known around the world by a variety of names including the Monaco Bar, Giant Sandwich, Maxibon, Cream Between, Vanilla Slice and many more.

Dimon Carrigan’s shot-blocking continues to turn heads - The Boston Globe (bostonglobe.com; Weitzer)

He is a game-changing shot blocker. But there’s a lot more to former Cambridge Rindge & Latin School star Dimon Carrigan than his defensive presence.

Standing 6 feet 9 inches with a 7-foot-3-inch wingspan, Carrigan powered the Falcons to 45 straight wins and back-to-back MIAA Division 1 state championships, dominating the paint on both ends of the floor to the point that he drew comparisons to another Cambridge great.

Yet while the local community anointed Carrigan as the second coming of NBA Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, college programs were less sure of his ability.

That is until Carrigan turned heads with his play as a member of the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) in April.

With a number of Division 1 coaches in attendance, Carrigan blocked 16 shots in a four-game span to earn Defensive Player of the Session in Hampton, Va..

Soon after, he received verbal offers from Washington, Miami, Houston, and Connecticut, among others.

Carrigan plans to spend a postgraduate year at Woodstock Academy (Conn.), but as the offers continue to pour in, Carrigan hopes to narrow his options to five top colleges following BABC’s participation at this week’s Peach Jam tournament.

“The college coaches are presently seeing on the AAU circuit what we’ve been seeing for the last three years,” Cambridge coach Lance Dottin said.

“The young man continues to develop on and off the court and with that basketball ability comes maturation.”

But it is not all about basketball. Carrigan is determined to heighten awareness of racial inequality in America.

Hoya Paranoia Back? Georgetown Pulls Out Of PK80 (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Georgetown hired Patrick Ewing in April but waited until August (or nearly at least) to pull out of Nike’s PK80 Phil Knight Invitational.

The tournament has 16 teams in two brackets that won’t intersect so it won’t affect Duke as the Blue Devils are on the other side.

It’s kind of a stupid thing to do. There’s no question Georgetown is going to have some struggles, but really, it’s better to take your lumps and learn. There’s really no other way to improve.

DePaul, now coached by former Virginia coach Dave Leitao, will take the spot.

A Reaction To The UNC Scandal (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Over at the Virginian-Pilot, Harry Minium does a really solid job of breaking down the case against UNC and what he thinks the NCAA should do.

Here’s the best part of his article:

“I’d feel some sympathy for UNC officials if they had earnestly tried to get to the bottom of all this. But instead of opening up, they lawyered up and stonewalled investigators. They blamed a false ‘media narrative’ for forcing the NCAA to investigate and have distanced themselves from the Wainstein report...[h]ad Carolina officials fallen on their collective swords in 2011 and made an honest effort to atone, they likely would have gotten off with minimum NCAA sanctions...Carolina is as defiant as ever as it heads into an NCAA hearing...Yes, there were academic problems, UNC has told the NCAA. But since these classes were also available to regular students, they didn’t violate NCAA rules, so this is none of your business, they’re arguing.”

That pretty neatly sums it up. The arrogance is just amazing.

Next question: if the NCAA does hammer the Heels, are they going to sue?

ACC Recruiting: The Son Also Rises (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

Here’s one we didn’t see coming: BC has offered Chris Herren, Jr (2019).

His dad, Chris Sr., started at Boston College before an early injury ended his season. BC didn’t appreciate the failed drug tests and kicked him out. After that he transferred to Fresno, where he played for post-Vegas Jerry Tarkanian.

Duke had also offered him and his picking his hometown BC saved Duke from a terrible situation: he would have probably failed drug tests at Duke during the year Coach K was forced to sit out due to his back situation.

Anyway, after a long and terrible struggle with addiction, Herren’s life is back on track. It’ll be interesting to see how his son does, wherever he ends up.

NC State’s Kevin Keatts rebuilt the Wolfpack basketball roster. Now what? (newsobserver.com; Decock)

Somehow, Kevin Keatts pulled it off. N.C. State leaves for its tour of Italy on Wednesday with 13 scholarship players on its roster, only seven of whom were around at the end of last season, only four of whom played any kind of a significant role for the Wolfpack.

Anyone in Keatts’ position would have had to do the same thing, and it’s easy to imagine different coaches having varying degrees of success. Time will tell on that. But with the addition of two graduate transfers, two regular transfers and two incoming freshmen, the most recent added on Friday, the Wolfpack will have enough players to actually get something done on its trip, even without Omer Yurtseven, who’s on international duty with Turkey’s under-20 team.

Adding six players isn’t uncommon in college basketball – Duke has a six-freshman incoming recruiting class that could yet grow to seven with the addition of Marvin Bagley – but it is unusual to be done during a period of time that’s usually pretty quiet other than the odd transfer here or there. There was no guarantee Keatts would be able to keep the ratio of ACC players to warm bodies high enough to field a roster. It looks like he got that done, although the exact degree of success remains to be seen – and will depend somewhat on whether Braxton Beverly, who enrolled in summer school at Ohio State before Thad Matta was fired and then was granted a release, will be given a waiver to play immediately.

East Syracuse Mayor Robert Tackman, in search of his fifth-straight Taste of East Syracuse cook-off crown, will look to defend his title against Wegmans chef Damian Price.
The cook-off is one of many events at tonight's 12th annual Taste of East Syracuse, held from 5 to 9 p.m. outside the East Syracuse Municipal Building. The cook-off is slated to start at 6 p.m. at the main stage.

Several local restaurants, including Tony's Family Restaurant, Oompa Loompyas, Twin Trees and Trappers Pizza Pub will be on hand selling samples.

Syracuse-based acoustic duo The Noisy Boys will perform and for the kids, there will be games, face painting, a dunk tank and more.

Temperatures in the mid 70s are expected this evening with a chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm.
