Welcome to National Creamsicle Day!

In 1905 in Oakland, California, 11-year-old Francis William "Frank" Epperson (1894-1983)[1]was mixing a white powdered flavoring for soda and water out on the porch. He left it there, with a stirring stick still in it. This was probably on accident. That night, temperatures reached a record low, and the next morning, Epperson discovered the drink had frozen to the stick, inspiring the idea of a fruit-flavored 'Popsicle'.[2] In 1922, he introduced the frozen treat at a fireman's ball. It was a sensation. In 1923, Epperson sold the frozen pop on a stick to the public at Neptune Beach, an amusement park in Alameda, California. Seeing that it was a success, in 1924 Epperson applied for a patent for his "frozen confectionery" which he called "the Epsicle ice pop".[3] He renamed it to Popsicle, allegedly at the insistence of his children.

Rutgers Basketball Continues To Change Narrative On Recruiting Trail After Making Final Six For 4-Star Jalen Carey (Breitman)

The Rutgers men’s basketball program, coming off a huge week right after the conclusion of the July live period, continues to build major momentum on the recruiting trail. Sunday night, consensus 4-star point guard and Top 100 recruit, Jalen Carey, announced the final six schools that he is considering and Rutgers made the cut.

Carey, the holder of over two dozen offers, included Rutgers among a group that includes traditional northeast powers Villanova, Syracuse, and UConn, as well as Miami and blue blood program, Kansas. This is significant for many reasons and signals a true change in perception within recruiting circles.

Carey had a great month on the Nike EYBL circuit and only improved his stock during the live period. Typically, when a recruit this highly ranked picks up offers from current powers like Arizona and Villanova, which Carey did in late July, Rutgers would get knocked out of the running. In fact, Steve Pikiell gambled by continuing to make Carey a priority during this past live period and it paid off.

You have to applaud the Rutgers staff for making the most of their time during the live period. Although they watched a bunch of prospects and made a dozen or so offers during July, they focused on Carey, 4-star guard Montez Mathis, and 3-star point guard Mac McClung the most of any other recruits. They were successful in landing Mathis and McClung less than a week after the conclusion of the live period. Just a couple of days later, Carey includes Rutgers on his final list. The tired narrative and negative perception of Rutgers on the recruiting trail, due to past failures with top local recruits and a history of losing, is quickly fading away. Steve Pikiell and his staff had to make waves with their 2018 recruiting class and certainly have in a major way. The best part is it’s only August and Rutgers can enter the fall having security with their current class and serious momentum with future classes.

Marvin Bagley to announce college decision Monday night on ESPN | Zagsblog (zagsblog.com; Zagoria)

The Marvin Bagley III Sweepstakes will come to a close Monday night when he announces his college decision and reclassification plans on ESPN.

Marvin Bagley III will announce college decision tomorrow night on the 11 pm. @SportsCenter. Where will he go — and will he reclassify?

— Jeff Goodman (@GoodmanESPN) August 13, 2017

The 6-foot-11 Bagley out of Sierra Canyon (CA) has now taken officials to Duke, USC and UCLA after opting out on an Arizona visit. The family had initially planned to visit Kentucky and Kansas as well, but those visits apparently won’t happen.

Bagley is looking to reclass and enroll in college this fall, making him eligible for the 2018 NBA Draft, where he could be in the mix for the No. 1 overall pick along with Missouri freshman forward Michael Porter Jr..

One quick note on Marvin Bagley, who was on his visit to UCLA today. One random thing UCLA can offer him other schools can’t? Quarters.

Bagley is still taking classes to finish his degree to reclassify. Both Duke and USC start school at end of August. UCLA starts end of Sept.

ACC Preview #2 - Wake Forest (dukebasketballreport.com; King)

You have to feel a bit for Wake’s Danny Manning. He’s done an underappreciated rebuild at Wake Forest. He has been putting together a roster which should have hit a high point this season. That was made more difficult when John Collins had a breakout season last year and far more difficult still when Dinos Mitoglou, after saying he wouldn’t, took a big offer and headed back to play professionally in Greece.

If they had both been back Wake could have been great.

Wake also loses grad student transfer Austin Arians who was smart and didn’t hurt his team. He was an excellent passer and three point shooter. He was a great glue guy.

Now the Deacs have some serious challenges but that also means some guys get a chance to step up.

The first guy on that list would be Doral Moore.

Although Collins surpassed him, Moore has had his moments at Wake Forest. Last season, as Collins’ backup, he averaged 8.4 ppg and 2.6 rpg in 8.4 mpg.

As a freshman, he had 19 points and seven rebounds in 20 minutes against Boston College.

We’re sure Wake has designed a program for him to work on agility and probably would like him to drop some weight too. He’s not a mess like Beejay Anya was - the guy is 7-1 and 265 - but a more agile big man would certainly help.

Hip-shaking Luke Bryan delivers high-octane Lakeview Amp sellout (review) (PS; Tulloch)

Luke Bryan is not the best singer to grace the Lakeview Amphitheater stage, nor is he is the most passionate musician or most fascinating storyteller.

However, he's the hardest working showman I've seen this year.

In terms of energy, Bryan never really dips out of the red zone. Whether he's spinning his microphone like a baton or belting every ba-ba-ba on "Sweet Caroline," he gives his all to every song and gimmick, maintaining the powerful momentum laid down from the start.

Bryan's simple lyrics are pure bro-country, praising women on tractors, fishing, whiskey, and so on. His pleasing voice elevates his predictable content, though, to megawatt levels of charm and catchiness.

As the son of a Georgia peanut farmer, Bryan often credits his work ethic to his relentless father. There's determination in his face as he plinks on piano or bellows a baritone note -- he doesn't want to disappoint his fans.

But hard work alone doesn't cut it. Bryan has tons of heart, humor and hips that don't quit. That winning combination takes him far. He invited an 11-year-old onstage, just to sign his T-shirt and hug him twice. (The women around me melted like butter.)
