Welcome to National Bratwurst Day!

National Bratwurst Day is dedicated to bratwursts—sometimes simply known as brats—which are sausages made from pork, veal, or beef, that contain sweet spices and seasonings such as nutmeg. They originated in Nuremberg, Germany, in the 14th century, and their name is derived from the German words "braten", meaning "to fry" or "to roast", and "wurst", meaning "sausage". There are over forty varieties of brats made in Germany, and they are many times served on a roll with mustard. They are also quite often accompanied by sauerkraut and potato salad. They were introduced to the United States in the mid-19th century by German immigrants, and have become especially popular in Wisconsin.

Syracuse Basketball Recruiting: Key Updates On 2018 Prospects (itlh.com; Adler)

A handful of recruiting nuggets here to discuss as it pertains to the Syracuse basketball squad and its promising class of 2018

Day by day and week by week, an abundance of recruiting activity has unfolded as it pertains to the Syracuse basketball program.

Four-star guard Jalen Carey, who recently included the Orange in his final six, has scheduled four official visits, per a article. Carey, down to Connecticut, the ‘Cuse, Kansas, Miami, Rutgers and Villanova, will travel to Central New York on Sept. 8, says .

Carey, who also took an unofficial visit to SU in June, attends the Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J. He is regarded as a consensus top-75 prospect by the four main recruiting Web sites.

For the moment, the 247Sports Crystal Ball pegs Syracuse as the front-runner for Carey. However, we all know that this means virtually nothing. See Quade Green. Or Jordan Tucker. Or … you get my drift.

Interestingly enough, four-star forward Darius Bazley, who has already pledged to don an Orange uniform beginning with the 2018-19 campaign, will have an official visit to the ‘Cuse on Sept. 8-9, according to Syracuse.com.

So, both Bazley and Carey, who is a high priority for head coach Jim Boeheim and his staff, will reside on the SU campus during the same weekend. Coincidence? I venture absolutely not.

Let’s hope that Bazley, who has shot up to No. 13 nationally via Scout.comand is from Princeton High School in Cincinnati, will get in Carey’s ear about joining him on the Hill. Those two studs would make one heck of a 2018 class.

Syracuse Cannot Recruit Against the ACC Blue Bloods, and That’s Okay – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Grossman)

Another big name in the college basketball recruiting game made his decision Thursday night and to nobody’s surprise, Duke added another five-star commit to their ranks. Marvin Bagley III, a five-star forward out of Arizona and the consensus number one high schooler in the country, took to ESPN to announce that he will play his college ball at Duke and that he is taking steps to graduate high school early and play for the Blue Devils this fall.

The following should be prefaced with the fact that the Orange were never in for Bagley.

Now for the point of the article. When Syracuse joined the ACC, some said that this move would not only bring in more money to the program, but also make them a more attractive school for recruits coming out of high school in both football and basktball. Everything about that statement is true. Since Syracuse joined the ACC, the conference announced a mega-deal with ESPN for its own network and both programs have been thrust even further into the national spotlight. However, just because Syracuse is in the ACC doesn’t mean that Syracuse can, or will ever be able to compete with some of the schools in the ACC when it comes to recruiting. And that is just fine.

Syracuse has never, and may never, be a school that a player like Bagley would feel that he has to consider. A certain caliber player, like Bagley, almost always begins his list with the likes of Duke and North Carolina, and seldom the likes of the Orange. Syracuse fans should not panic when they read headlines about top players choosing to go to Durham. This is nothing new and was never something that was going to stop just because an historic program like Syracuse joined the conference that they have been bossing for decades.

A Comprehensive Look at ACC Basketball Recruiting Since 2003: Part 2 (bloggersodear.com; Foster and Harwood)

Analysis of this set of Data:
In looking at the year-by-year analysis of each recruiting class, along with the coaches recruiting these players to these schools, it is pretty obvious that two schools have the upper hand on the rest. Legendary Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski consistently brings in the best recruiting class across the board, nearly every single year. He has a total of 27 (with the recent addition of Marvin Bagley III for 2017) 5-star and 25 4-star recruits over this 15 year period of data. In second place is North Carolina coach Roy Williams who has 17 5-star and 23 4-star recruits over a 14 year span.

Check back later this week for Part 3 to see how this recruiting data correlates with
the success of teams in both the regular season and conference tournament.

What will the solar eclipse look like in Upstate New York? (PS; Eisenstadt)

Upstate New York is not in the "path of totality" for next week's eclipse. That means the magical moment when the sun is completely blocked out by the moon's shadow won't happen for us.

But the the eclipse still will be noticeable, said Sam Sampere, who teaches Physics at Syracuse University. You just have to know what to look for and when to look for it.

In Syracuse and most of Upstate New York, the moon will block between 70 and 75 percent of the sun. The eclipse will start about 1:15 p.m., reaching its peak around 2:35 p.m.

At the peak, the sky will get darker, but not black like along the path of totality. Sempere said the temperature will also drop a few degrees because the sun is being blocked.

To watch the eclipse, either use special eclipse viewing glasses, a pinhole camera or another method. While the eclipse will not be total here, the sun is still too strong to look at directly without damaging your eyes.

To see what the eclipse will look like in your zip code, you can look it up in this link from Vox and watch the animation.
