Welcome to National Cheese Pizza Day!

National Cheese Pizza Day is dedicated to the pie shaped flatbread with toppings, first eaten in Naples in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. At the time, this coastal city was not part of Italy, but its own kingdom. The working poor, or lazzaroni, lived outside or in small homes, and needed cheap food. Pizza consisted of flatbread with toppings such as tomatoes, garlic, cheese, oil, or anchovies, and it was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants, and eaten for any meal. Naples became part of Italy in 1861, and in 1889, Queen Margherita and King Umberto visited Naples and tried pizza. Legend has it that she loved mozzarella pizza, which included mozzarella cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil—the colors of the Italian flag. The pizza then took her namesake. But, pizza didn't end up becoming popular in the rest of Italy until the 1940's.

SU Hoops: Loss Of Taurean Thompson Stings, But Orange Will Persevere (insideloudhouse.com; Adler)

Taurean Thompson is likely leaving the SU hoops squad is brutal, but not fatal. ITLH takes an in-depth look at the suddenly dire situation in CNY

Well, this is a bummer.

Just as the Syracuse community turns its attention to the upcoming college-football season, the Orange basketball outfit took a somewhat surprising gut-punch.

Per Syracuse.com, sophomore Taurean Thompson is not expected to return to the ‘Cuse for the 2017-18 campaign. The article said that Thompson is dealing with some family health concerns and wants to play ball closer to home.

Reports have surfaced this week that Thompson may transfer to Seton Hall, a school that he considered, along with Michigan State, before deciding on SU.

First and foremost, let’s wish Thompson well. Family and health are way more important than basketball, or any other sport for that matter. Now, I’ve read online that perhaps Thompson went ghost over the summer and didn’t return messages from Syracuse coaches and players.

If that is, indeed, the case, that’s not particularly cool. However, we don’t know what Thompson is

NYS Fair attendance 2017: Labor Day topples single-day record and overall record, too (PS; Dowty)

The New York State Fair toppled two attendance records Monday, setting new standards for single-day and total fair attendance.

A total of 124,819 people packed the fair on Labor Day, breaking the one-day record set a week ago Sunday by 1,613.

And the crowds easily broke last year's attendance record for the entire fair. Over its 13-day run this year, 1,161,912 people visited. That's up from 1,117,630 in 2016, or a gain of 44,282.

While a gaudy number, this year's fair was actually down slightly on a per-day average from last year, when the fair was only 12 days long.

This year, an average of 89,378 people visited per day. In 2016, that number was 93,136.

Both years set records at a breakneck pace.

This year set four different attendance records for specific days of the fair: on the first Sunday, the first Monday, the second Saturday and the second Monday (today).

Today's attendance, of course, set a new record for any single day in the fair's history.

The 2016 fair retains the record for attendance on the second Thursday and the second Friday.
