Welcome to National Chocolate Milkshake Day!
National Chocolate Milkshake day is dedicated to the chocolate version of the frothy and thick drink, that is usually made with milk, ice cream, and flavored syrup. Milkshakes were first mentioned in print in Britain in 1885, and may have contained whiskey at the time. By the turn of the 20th century, they were seen as being more wholesome, and the alcohol was replaced with syrups such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Another version of the milk shake, the malted milkshake, was invented in 1887. This shake added malted milk, which consists of a mixture of evaporated milk, wheat flour, and malted barley. Other names for a milkshake include frappé, frosted, thick shake, and cabinet, which is the term used in Rhode Island. Milkshakes have traditionally been sold in many places: malt or soda shops, ice cream shops, diners, fast food restaurants, and other similar type of establishments. Many times milkshakes are made with a blender using a stainless steel cup. As not all of the milkshake always fits in a glass, the stainless steel cup with the extra mixture is brought to the table with a spoon.

Four-star guard Jalen Carey schedules home visit with Syracuse this week – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)
It’s been well-documented that the Syracuse basketball recruiting class of 2018 is shaping up to be something special. Darius Bazley is quickly becoming one of the most highly-rated prospects in his class. Meanwhile, late last week, Jim Boeheim’s son, Buddy, committed to play for his dad beginning in 2018. Now, the Orange may just be inching closer to another much sought after recruit.
Over the weekend, Bazley and guard Jalen Carey made their official visits to the Syracuse campus. The fact that Bazley and Carey visited Central New York in the same weekend is fantastic news for SU basketball fans. The idea behind the two recruits coming at the same time was that Carey would bond with Bazley and realize that a partnership with the 6-foot-9 forward could be mutually beneficial in the long run. To some degree, it seems that the pitch intrigued Carey and his family.
According to his father, Carey has scheduled a trio of in-home visits for this week and Syracuse made the cut. Jim Boeheim will visit the 6-foot-3 guard for an in-home meeting on Thursday. Carey’s other in-home visits will come from Miami on Wednesday and UConn on Friday.
Not only is it a good sign that Carey has scheduled an in-home meeting with the Orange, but his dad seems to be pretty excited about the situation SU offers for his son.
“He’s the only point guard they’re recruiting in his class right now,” John Carey told Zagsblog.com, “Basically he would come in, he could play right away.” The four-star guard’s father added, “With him (Darius Bazley), Oshae Brissett and Buddy Boeheim, it’s looking really, really scary over there.”
John Carey’s support of Syracuse is certainly a welcome change of pace for Orange fans after they saw Taurean Thompson’s mother possibly influence her son’s decision to withdraw from Syracuse in late August.

Matthew Leyva, who lost both legs in Afghanistan, gets 'smart home' in Pompey (video) (PS; Baker)
Matthew Leyva smiled as he rolled through his new home for the first time. He had at least one idea for the wide-open floor plan.
"I'm gonna roll around and do donuts," he said, grinning and laughing. "I'm gonna do all sorts of stuff, man."
As of 9:59 Monday morning, Leyva is the proud owner of a new, tailor-made "smart home" in Pompey, thanks to a not-for-profit inspired by a firefighter who gave his life on 9/11.
Leyva, 27, was a U.S. Army specialist in Afghanistan. During a foot patrol on Aug. 9, 2011 he triggered an explosive device hidden in a mud wall. He lost both his legs and several fingers on each hand. He spent two months in a coma, and was transported to hospitals in Germany and Texas. His recovery took more than two years.
Since then, Leyva, who uses a wheelchair, has been living in a small apartment in Cicero. There was no room to do donuts.
Eventually, he got connected with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a charity that builds accessible homes for people injured in service. The group chose him for a new house in the Town of Pompey on a lot he picked out. The charity partnered with more than a dozen sponsors locally, many of which donated services and materials to build and outfit the house.
