Welcome to National Gumbo Day!
National Gumbo Day celebrates gumbo, a stew that originated in southern Louisiana in the 18th century. Just as the word gumbo oftentimes today means a mix of cultures, the dish itself is a blending of culinary traditions of different cultures—West African (from which the name gumbo may derive), Choctaw, French, Spanish, German, and Filipino. There are many types of gumbo, and common ingredients are meats such as chicken or andouille sausage; seafood such as crawfish, crab, and shrimp; the "holy trinity" of vegetables—onions, bell peppers, and celery; and okra. It is often also made with filé powder, which is made from ground sassafras leaves. A roux, which is a thickener made from flour and fat, is also an important component of gumbo. The stew is usually served over rice, and the two main varieties are Creole and Cajun gumbo. Gumbo is the state dish of Louisiana, and originally was only popular in the Gulf Coast region, but started gaining a wider popularity across the country in the 1980's.

Experience with Syracuse basketball's zone can be indicator of defensive efficiency - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)
Last week, I wrote about whether collegiate playing experience had a direct correlation with overall win total. Not surprisingly, the answer was, with a relative degree of mathematical uncertainty, yes.
But it isn’t all just about collegiate experience, right? After all, last season, the Orange actually had a relatively experienced team, with two fifth-year players in the starting lineup in John Gillon and Andrew White III.
The issue wasn’t overall experience. The issue was experience with SU’s vaunted 2-3 zone.
In 2016-17, Syracuse’s adjusted defense according to KenPom.com was 102.3, or 118th in the country, which is about as bad as we’ve seen SU’s zone in recent memory.
Last week, I picked three random teams and came up with a multiplier to determine wins based on years of experience. This week, I tried to refine it a bit more by removing some players who, while they had more experience, were non-factors, and would skew the statistics.
In other words, a guy like Dajuan Coleman would have four years of experience playing the zone, but by the end of the year, he was an afterthought in the rotation. So I really only accounted for the six players that Jim Boeheim used in his rotation:

There are a few recruiting targets that the Wolfpack has a chance to get, and some are among the country’s top-100. Here’s who could end up at N.C. State from the Class of 2018:
▪ Saddiq Bey, a 6-7, 195-pound small forward, from Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C., is ranked No. 83, according to 247sports’ composite rankings. He made his official visit to N.C. State last Friday. Xavier, Miami, Pittsburgh and Princeton are also among the schools in contention for the four-star prospect.

▪ Jairus Hamilton, a 6-8, 209-pound small forward, plays for Cannon School in Concord. He is ranked No. 66 in the country. Hamilton has offers from Duke, N.C. State and UNC. He played well at the John Wall Invitational in Raleigh last December, scoring 25 points in one game and scoring 26 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in another.
