Pitt junior Jared Wilson-Frame grew up a UConn and Syracuse fan (post-gazette.com; Batko)

As a kid in Hartford, Conn., the heart of UConn Huskies territory, Jared Wilson-Frame lived through some glory years of the Big East Conference.

A self-proclaimed basketball “junkie,” Wilson-Frame liked UConn, sort of because he had to. He was an even bigger fan of Syracuse, the program about four hours away that played the same 2-3 zone defense as Wilson-Frame’s Windsor High School team. But he was also plenty aware and appreciative of the school he plays for now.

“Toughness is probably the first word I would use to describe the program,” said Wilson-Frame, now a junior-college transfer who figures to start on the wing this year at Pitt. “Big East basketball was at the top of its game when I was growing up, so just watching that, Pittsburgh definitely was the toughest team to me — Pittsburgh or West Virginia. Funny that they’re rivals, but those are the two teams that really just stuck out with toughness.”

Wilson-Frame hopes to add to that reputation at Pitt, where tenacious defense and grind-it-out offense haven’t exactly been the calling card for a long time. Like any athlete, he knows he has to take this rebuilding season one game at a time, but he does harbor a little extra anticipation for some of Pitt’s 2017-18 opponents.

Professors: First-year curriculum could have improved College of Law’s bar exam pass rate (DO; Fitzgerald)

About 92 percent of Syracuse University College of Law graduates passed the state bar exam this summer, the university recently announced, marking a two-decade high pass rate.

Seven years ago, in 2010, SU’s College of Law had the lowest bar exam pass rate in New York after just about 70 percent of graduates passed the test — 16 percent lower than the state’s average that year, Syracuse.com reported.

A new law curriculum could be part of the reason why the college’s pass rate has improved, two professors said.

“This is a point of pride in the law school, and it’s unfortunate that we have to flunk people, but it’s more honest to flunk them so they are not wasting their time and money, and then later they don’t pass the bar,” said Antonio Gidi, a teaching professor at the College of Law.
