Welcome to Giving Tuesday!

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable giving season. Coming just after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it was created in part as a response to the commercialism and consumerism of those days. It was started in 2012 at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that has focused on values such as service and giving since its founding in 1874.

Syracuse Basketball: Tyus Battle’s Status Is Huge In Terps Tilt (itlh.com; Adler)

The competition is intensifying for the Syracuse basketball squad, as the Orange gets set to host Maryland tonight in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

It’s my hometown team versus my alma mater on Monday evening from the Carrier Dome.

Ugh. Heartburn central.

Maryland (6-1) is squaring off with the ‘Cuse (5-0) tonight as part of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.

Although I’m an extremely proud SU alum, I also grew up about 30 minutes from UMD’s campus in College Park. My Mom went to school there; so did a ton of my friends. I wildly cheered on the Terrapins as a kid.

However, as much as I still root for Maryland, I bleed Orange. There is no doubt about which university I want to win in this juicy affair.

The Terps are a solid group, and I expect them to end up in the top half of the Big Ten after the 2017-18 campaign concludes. Their sole loss is to St. Bonaventure, whom Syracuse will duel with next month. UMD has a quality victory over Butler so far in this stanza.

Maryland men’s basketball comes up short at Syracuse in 72-70 loss (testudotimes.com; Johnson)

Maryland men’s basketball played a back-and-forth game in the opening of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, eventually falling on the road to Syracuse, 72-70.

This was a two-point game until two Maryland turnovers allowed the Orange to push the lead to four at the line. In front of a couple hundred of his family and friends, Clifton Park, New York, native Kevin Huerter stepped up and nailed his seventh three-pointer of the night to make it a one-point game, but a miscue on the ensuing inbound allowed Syracuse to walk away with a win.

Huerter was unconscious from beyond and finished with a season-high 23 points, going 7-of-9 from three, to lead the Terps’ scoring effort in the Carrier Dome.

Despite Huerter's hot shooting, Maryland loses to Syracuse, 72-70, in Big Ten/ACC Challenge Markus)

Ever since the matchup was announced last spring, Maryland guard Kevin Huerter was looking forward to Monday night’s basketball game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome.

It was a team he followed growing up 2½ hours east in Clifton Park and a program he might have committed to had Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim recruited him a little more seriously.

The homecoming turned out to be bittersweet for the 6-foot-7 sophomore.

Struggling with his 3-point shot for most of the season, Huerter put on an impressive shooting performance that led one courtside fan to yell, “Oh, my god,” when he threw in a 35-footer that barely touched the net on its way through.

Nebraska, Huerter’s season-high of 23 points that included hitting seven of his first eight 3-pointers weren’t enough as the Terps lost to the Orange, 72-70.

Maryland men’s basketball falls, 72-70, to Syracuse in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge (dbknews.com; Melnick)

After offering no answers for zone defenses last season, the Maryland men's basketball team fielded a bevy of questions over the past month regarding how it would attack those schemes. So it was only fitting the final minute of the Terps' 72-70 loss to Syracuse on Monday night came down to their ability to score against the Orange's historically strong 2-3 zone.

After guard Tyus Battle's 3-pointer gave Syracuse a two-point lead with 54.4 seconds remaining, the Terps turned the ball over on their following two possessions. While guard Kevin Huerter's seventh trey of the game with 7.5 seconds remaining brought the Terps within one, Battle's dunk on the next possession all but sealed the Orange's win.

"Syracuse slowed the game down, so we couldn't get out in transition," guard Darryl Morsell said. "Their zone, they have great length. They were able to play in passing lanes and still contest shots."

Syracuse basketball defeats Maryland 72-70: Brent Axe recap (PS; Axe)

NCAA Tournament berths are usually locked down with St. Patrick's Day decorations on the walls.

Make no mistake about it, though. If the Syracuse University men's basketball team is going to return to March Madness, that process starts now as you box up the Thanksgiving decor and make room for the Christmas tree in the living room.

Syracuse's absence from the NCAA's last season was due to a void of quality non-conference wins. An 18-14 overall record, that included a 10-8 ACC mark, wasn't enough to be on the good side of the bubble.

The Orange's 72-70 win over Maryland on Monday night at the Carrier Dome was a solid start to reverse the blemish of a season ago.

The No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks are next for Syracuse on Saturday in Miami.

That would be a really big fish to add to the net in non-conference play, but winning two of the next three (with UConn to come Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden) seems like a more reasonable goal to pad SU's NCAA resume.

City denies Bank of America's request to demolish Eastwood building (PS; Baker)

The vacant building next to the Palace Theatre in Eastwood will remain standing... for now.

The Syracuse Planning Commission denied a request from Bank of America to tear down the building it owns at 2366-2374 James St.

In its 4-0 decision, the commission cited the city's land use policy and Eastwood's overlay guidelines, which are intended to preserve the neighborhood.

The vote came at the end of a three-hour hearing at City Hall Monday evening, during which 19 Eastwood residents warned of the gaping hole the demolition would leave in a rebounding business corridor.

The building in question is situated between the Palace Theatre and Bank of America's Eastwood branch on the corner of James Street and Hickock Avenue.

Many speakers characterized Bank of America as an absentee landlord and a bad neighbor. Most said they were worried about Bank of America owning a vacant lot in the heart of Eastwood because they've seen how little the bank cares about the community and its existing property.
