Welcome to Beer Can Appreciation Day!

Beer Can Appreciation Day recognizes the great day in 1935 when beer was first sold in cans.

Credit for the first beverage can goes to the Krueger Brewing Company of Richmond, Virginia. Made of steel and weighing in at almost 4 ounces, these hefty canisters opened with a church key.

The first beer produced in a can goes to Krueger Brewing Company of Richmond, Virgina but it was American Can Company that made canning drinkable beer possible.

Krueger’s took the risk with American Can Company just weeks before the repeal of Prohibition.

Weighing in at 4 ounces, the hefty steel cans opened with a church key. Loyal Krueger’s drinkers favored the can over the bottle 9-1.

* 1935 -Cone-Top – G. Heilemann Brewing Company – La Crosse, WI – Introduces cone-top cans which fit existing bottling lines convenient for small brewers with small budgets.
* 1963 -Pull Tab – Pittsburgh Brewing Company – Revolutionizes the beer can when it introduces Iron City Beer in self-opening cans with pull tabs, also known as pop tops. With their sharp edges, the pull tabs became the feared litter at beaches, parks, backyards and anywhere beverages were consumed.
* 1975 – Stay Tab- Falls City Brewing Company of Louisville, KY introduces the Stay Tab removing the pull tab’s environmental impact.

Syracuse men's basketball opponent preview: What to know about Boston College (DO; Gutierrez)

After an eight-day hiatus, Syracuse (13-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) returns to the hardwood Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside the Carrier Dome for a matchup with Boston College (13-7, 3-4). The Eagles went 10-62 in ACC play over the previous four seasons entering 2017-18, yet they have already won three games in conference play. That includes wins against then-No.1 Duke, Florida State and Wake Forest.

The Orange, meanwhile, will look to build on its first win since New Year’s Eve, a home victory over Pittsburgh last week. Here’s what you need to know about Boston College for Wednesday night’s matchup.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 46-25

Last time they played: Two weeks after getting lit up for 96 points at Conte Forum, Syracuse secured a 23-point home victory over BC. Tyus Battle led all scorers with 21 points to go along with two assists and a trio of steals. Frank Howard scored four points in 16 minutes of action, while BC’s guards Jerome Robinson and Ky Bowman were held to only 12 points.

Jerome Robinson rising above North Carolina recruiting snub at Boston College (DO; Manning)

Jerome Robinson ventured to Chapel Hill basketball camps numerous summers growing up near Raleigh, N.C. His bedroom walls “had to be blue.” Tar Heels jerseys and shorts filled his drawers.

Jeremy, his younger brother, rooted for Duke, fanning the flames of their one-on-one games. When his father, Jerome Robinson Sr., unloaded shots at the Dean Smith Center alongside his UNC friends, Robinson tagged along.

The father and son assembled a highlight tape and sent it to an assistant coach at UNC early in Robinson’s high school days. Though he was slender, lacking flashiness and had yet to rise to his current 6-foot-6 height, his father said he thought he had a chance. Robinson’s favorite team told him no.

“We see you but you’re not quite there yet,” Robinson Sr. said, remembering the reply. The two printed it out. Robinson’s motivation for life had been dropped directly in his inbox.

Robinson now leads a rejuvenated Boston College (13-7, 3-4 Atlantic Coast) program in scoring with his 18.3 points per game into BC’s game against Syracuse (13-6, 2-4) on Wednesday. The Eagles boast a win over then-No. 1 Duke, a massive stride in proving his home state wrong for snubbing him in recruitment. Duke once represented Robinson’s dream of playing in “The Triangle” of NC State, Duke and UNC.

Syracuse Basketball Looks to Keep Momentum in the Dome Against Boston College | CitrusTV (citrustv.com; Staff)

Syracuse Men’s Basketball (13-6, 2-4 ACC) is looking to maintain positive momentum going into its first matchup of the season against a Boston College (13-7, 3-4 ACC) squad that has surprised some this season with wins against Duke and Florida State. The Orange is coming off its first win since New Year’s Eve and a week’s rest, and the Eagles have struggled on the road this season. This is the 72nd time these two teams have met, with Syracuse holding the edge 46-25 all-time with wins in five of the last six matchups. The Orange look to go six of seven on Wednesday at 7 p.m., and our analysts tell you if Jim Boeheim’s squad can get it done.

Key to the Game: Don’t Play Down to Your Opponents

Let’s face it, that win against Pitt was sloppy. When facing an evenly matched opponent like Boston College, the key for Syracuse is to establish its style of basketball early on. Set the tone and force the Eagles to work around the 2-3 zone. Both of these teams average around 13 turnovers per game, but if the Orange can capitalize off of BC’s turnovers and not make sloppy plays of its own, there should not be much trouble in getting its second straight win.

Boston College vs. Syracuse: College basketball game preview, TV schedule (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

Two teams part of the “ACC bubble” will face off in the Carrier Dome looking for a huge win. Can the Eagles shoot over the Orange zone?

TV schedule: Wednesday, Jan. 24, 7:00 p.m. ET. ESPNU

Arena: Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York

The latest Bracketology for Busting Brackets has been released, and the ACC basketball conference received eight bids, tied for the most of any league. The ACC team that received the very last bid was Syracuse 13-6 (2-4), one of the “last four teams in.”

This team was considered “safe” a couple of weeks ago, but a four-game skid has put them in the danger zone. They were able to snap that losing streak in their only game of the week against Pittsburgh, but the Panthers represent nothing positive in terms of a win.

A team that is looking to get into the picture is Boston College 13-7 (3-4), who does have a number of losses but will always have that home win over Duke in their pocket. The Eagles split their last two games, beating Florida State at home before losing at Louisville.

Harden Furniture up for sale in foreclosure auction (PS; Moriarty)

Harden Furniture, which has been making high-end furniture in the Oneida County village of McConnellsville for 174 years, is being sold in a foreclosure auction.

Furniture Today reported Tuesday that a lender, GemCap, is selling the Harden's assets in an auction that is scheduled to be completed by the end of January.

Harden employs about 250 people at its 450,000-square-foot factory in McConnellsville, 38 miles northeast of Syracuse.

Miramar Capital Partners has held a majority ownership stake in Harden since 2016, according to the trade site. Gregory Harden, who has been Harden's CEO since 1992 and is the fifth generation of leadership at the family-owned business, holds a minority stake.

Furniture Today said Harden could lose his stake in the business unless he is among the successful bidders.

"My hope is that we wind up with a new ownership group that is willing to make the investment that needs to be made in the company so we can enjoy additional growth and another 174 years," he told the trade site. "It is a tough business these days, but the commercial business has been especially good in the last 12 months."
