Syracuse Basketball: Talented big man Osun Osunniyi to visit the Orange (itlh.com; Mlodzinski)
Osun Osunniyi, a 6-10 center out of Putnam Science Academy, is set to visit Syracuse next Thursday, as reported by Mike Waters of Syracuse.com.
After committing to play ball at La Salle, Osun Osunniyi decommitted to explore more options. Since then, he has received interest from Georgetown, Maryland, St. Bony, and the Cuse.
Osun has a lot of work to do, as he is 6-10 with only a 185 pound frame. He has only been ranked in one of the major recruiting sites, receiving a 2-star from Composite. Thus, he will be a work in progress.
The Orange must see some potential in Osunniyi.
This would be an interesting pickup for the Orange, who don’t normally go below 3-star players. However, Cuse is set to lose Paschal Chukwu after next season, who is the Orange’s only true center. As a two-star, Osunniyi is definitely not the savior for Cuse’s big man needs. However, his potential is endless, as Osunniyi has actually only been playing basketball for a few years.
One thing that really stands out is Osunniyi’s defensive capabilities. In fact, per 97.3 ESPN, in a game in 2016 while Osun was still in public school, he exploded for a triple double. His team won by over 30 points, and Osunniyi recorded 23 points, 15 boards, and 15 blocks. Yes, you read that right. 15 blocks in ONE game. Of course, this is a major testament of Osunniyi’s defensive skill, which, is always a help in the zone.
