Welcome to National Chocolate Chip Day!

On May 15th, we recognize a morsel of a thing. It’s National Chocolate Chip Day!

Have you ever wondered if an ingredient would work in a recipe? It is hard to imagine where we would be without the invention of chocolate chips.

In 1937, Ruth Graves Wakefield of Whitman Massachusetts must have been curious what a little bit of chocolate would add to her cookies. While working at the Toll House Inn, she added cut-up chunks of semi-sweet Nestle chocolate bar to a cookie recipe. The cookies were a huge success and in 1939 Wakefield signed an agreement with Nestle to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging. In exchange for the recipe, Wakefield received a lifetime supply of chocolate. The Nestle brand Toll House cookies were named for the Inn.

Nestle initially included a small chopping tool with the chocolate bars. Starting in 1941, Nestle and other competitors started selling the chocolate in chip or morsel form.

Syracuse University Announces Carrier Dome Renovation - Arena Digest (arenadigest.com; Editors)

Major changes are coming to the Carrier Dome, as Syracuse University has announced $118 million worth of planned improvements to the venue. A new fixed roof, a vertically hung scoreboard, state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, improved accessibility and added Wi-Fi capabilities are among the features that fans will experience beginning in fall 2020.

The $118 million investment, authorized by the Board of Trustees, will enable the University to create a new stadium experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans alike. Today’s announcement represents the next step in advancing the $255 million West Campus transformation strategy the University first announced on May 16, 2016.

“This is a great day for Syracuse University as we take a significant step in advancing the goals contained in our Campus Framework, a 20-year roadmap designed to align our vision and mission with our physical space,” says Chancellor Kent Syverud. “Creating a new stadium experience is a key element to supporting a vibrant and diverse campus community. I am excited for our students—undergraduate and graduate—who will receive their degrees in front of their families and friends, for the student-athletes who will compete in this space and for the thousands of individuals who will visit our campus for athletic events, concerts and other activities.”

The decision to move forward with this investment follows a comprehensive, multi-year review and assessment process. Over the last two years, members of the Board of Trustees, University leaders and other campus constituents have explored options for the future of an on-campus stadium, particularly as it relates to replacing the aging roof.

Since the University announced the Campus Framework in 2016, several initiatives that advance academic excellence and the student experience have been prioritized. Those priority initiatives have included more than $27 million in accessibility updates, classroom upgrades, learning technology enhancements and robust improvements to residence halls. The University has also recently begun work on two signature projects: the Barnes Center at The Arch, a new state-of-the-art student-focused health and wellness complex that is a key component of transforming the West Campus, and the National Veterans Resource Center, which will allow the University to fulfill its promise of being the best place for veterans.

“In partnership with academic leaders, in particular the deans of the schools and colleges, we have made tremendous headway on several key initiatives over the last two years,” says Amir Rahnamay-Azar, senior vice president and chief financial officer. “There is still more work to do. Our chief focus—both operationally and strategically—remains prioritizing initiatives that advance academic excellence, enhance the student experience and elevate our global research portfolio.”

Syracuse Basketball: Robert Braswell commitment provides pivotal depth (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad got some encouraging news over the weekend, as promising 2018 power forward Robert Braswell pledged his services to SU.
The Orange hoops program just got a juicy boost for its 2018 class.

Robert Braswell, an intriguing yet under-the-radar power forward, has committed to the ‘Cuse and will suit up beginning with the 2018-19 campaign.

Kudos to recruiting analyst Evan Daniels of 247Sports, who first broke the news on Sunday evening.

The 6-9 Braswell, a three-star prospect in the 2018 class, is out of Blythewood High in Blythewood, S.C. He made a visit to Central New York about a week ago, with Syracuse among his three finalists, along with Massachusetts and Oklahoma State.

Braswell appears as a late-bloomer in his class, as he’s not rated by some of the recruiting services. Nationally, 247Sports slots him as 170th in the 2018 class. Honestly, as I’ve said before on many occasions, these rankings are pretty fickle, and I wouldn’t necessarily take too much stock in them.

Head coach Jim Boeheim and his assistants seem excited about Braswell, and for good reason. Check out some excerpts from a “scout’s take” by Daniels in his article on Sunday night:

TV star Guy Fieri cheers on Syracuse University grad's creative cap (photos) (PS; Herbert)

Syracuse is Flavortown.

Guy Fieri cheered on Syracuse University graduates on Sunday, sharing a photo of a student's mortarboard during the commencement ceremony in the Carrier Dome. The cap design featured a drawing of the Food Network star on a pink background with the words "...And we're rolling out."

The phrase is used by Fieri on his TV show "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," a traveling show that celebrates restaurants across the U.S. Several episodes featured Syracuse restaurants filmed in 2012, including Eva's European Sweets, Empire Brewing Co., Pastabilities, Kitty Hoyne's Irish Pub & Restaurant, Funk 'n Waffles and Byblos Mediterranean Cafe.

"A friend took this ... creative cap at @SyracuseU!! Congrats grads!!!" the celebrity chef wrote.

Fieri didn't say who the grad is or which friend sent the photo, but he's close with local band Sophistafunk, whose keyboardist Adam Gold owns Funk 'N Waffles. Sophistafunk performed at Fieri's 45th birthday party in 2013 and wrote the theme song for another Fieri TV show, "Guy's Grocery Games"; Gold competed on "GGG" last year.
