Welcome to Hummus Day!

Hummus is a Levantine and Egyptian food dip or spread made from cooked, mashed chickpeas or other beans, blended with tahini, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and garlic. Today, it is popular throughout the Middle East (including Turkey), North Africa (including Morocco), and in Middle Eastern cuisine around the globe.

Many cuisine-related sources describe hummus as an ancient food or connect it to famous historical figures such as Saladin. Indeed, its basic ingredients—chickpeas, sesame, lemon, and garlic—have been eaten in the region for millennia.

But in fact, there is no specific evidence for this purported ancient history of hummus bi tahini. Though chickpeas were widely eaten in the region, and they were often cooked in stews and other hot dishes, puréed chickpeas eaten cold with tahini do not appear before the Abbasid period in Egypt and the Levant.

Who will Syracuse basketball play in ACC-Big Ten Challenge? Sizing up possibilities (PS; Waters)

One of the biggest dates on Syracuse's non-conference schedule over the past five years has been the Orange's game in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

Syracuse is 2-3 in the annual event, which features 14 games between teams in the two conferences over the course of three or four days in late November.

The Orange has beaten Indiana and Maryland, both in games at the Carrier Dome, while losing to Michigan once and Wisconsin twice.

The pairings for this year's ACC-Big Ten Challenge should be announced soon. In recent years, the matchups have been revealed in late May or early June.

Who will Syracuse face in the annual event? Let's take a look at some of the most likely scenarios with a few more intriguing possibilities.

Top candidates

Since Syracuse played Maryland at the Carrier Dome last season, it would make sense for the Orange to play this year's ACC-Big Ten Challenge game on the road.

Over the past five years, Syracuse has gone home, away, home, away and home.

Carrier Dome renovations might mean better intros for Syracuse basketball (ranking ACC's best) (PS; Waters)

On Monday, Syracuse University officials announced upcoming renovations to the Carrier Dome. Among the changes will be a permanent roof structure that will allow for a new video-scoreboard and upgrades to the building's lighting and sound systems.

These changes mean that Syracuse's pre-game player introductions could have a completely different look by 2020.

The Carrier Dome's current lighting system doesn't allow for the lights to be turned off during player introductions.

In 2020, Syracuse will be able to douse the lights and use spotlights and other features during the player introductions.

Take a look at the video from Syracuse's game against Duke in the 2013-14 season. Look at that crowd.

Now, imagine that scene in the dark with a sound system that makes it possible to hear the PA announcer. Pretty crazy, right?

For a look at the potential for what Syracuse could do during its pre-game player introductions, here is a look, and ranking, of how the rest of the ACC's schools pump up the crowd during the pre-game player intros.

Soggy weekend weather for Central New York (PS; Montreuil)

Another weekend of cloudy, cool, and sometimes wet weather will unfold across Central New York.

Overall, the weekend will be similar to last weekend, though the mechanisms at play are completely different.

A surge of moisture along the East Coast will bring several chances for rain this weekend. The best chance, however, seems to be Saturday morning. Widespread rain will be possible during this time.

Rain will move in from the south during the early morning and could linger as late as the early or mid afternoon. Behind the steady rain, scattered showers will remain possible the remainder of the day. No sunshine is expected.

With the clouds and rain, temperatures will be held below normal. After morning lows in the low 50s, afternoon highs will only add a few degrees, topping out in the upper 50s.

Scattered showers will persist overnight with another area of light rain expected to move through Sunday morning.
