National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day celebrates doughnuts of the cream-filled variety. Doughnuts, or "donuts" as they also are known, are deep-fried yeast pastries. The first doughnuts in America in fact were little "nuts" of dough, and they were brought to New England by the Pilgrims, who had learned to make them while they were in Holland from 1607-1620. The first mention of doughnuts in print was in Washington Irving's 1809 book History of New York, which talks about Dutch settlers to New Amsterdam in the 17th century. By the middle of the 19th century, doughnuts with a punched out center became the norm, and doughnut corers were even being sold by mail order catalog! By the 20th century, many variations of doughnuts became popular, including the cream-filled doughnut. Sometimes these doughnuts are known as a "cream doughnut" or "cream stick", and they can be filled with a number of different fillings such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, raspberry, and lemon. One of the most popular cream-filled doughnuts is the Boston cream doughnut, which has chocolate frosting and a vanilla cream filling. It is a miniaturized doughnut version of the Boston cream pie, and in 2003 it was made the official doughnut of Massachusetts.
Orange Watch: Interesting nuggets to the 2018-19 Syracuse basketball schedule - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: Just ahead of the effects of impending Hurricane Francis getting close to the ACC’s Greensboro home base, the conference released the 2018-19 men’s basketball schedule on Thursday, and coupled with the previous announcement of the two exhibition matchups against Div. II schools and the 13 non-league games, the Orange schedule is now complete with ACC dates/times, but not yet for all of the non-league tipoff times.
As Jim Boeheim begins preseason practice on Sept. 25 embarking on his head-shaking 43rd season, and his first-ever coaching one of his own in sharp shooting freshman Buddy Boeheim, the path to making a deeper NCAA run than last season’s surprising Sweet 16 appearance is now set.
In a best case scenario the Orange would make the NCAA Tournament and play in the East Regional in somewhat close-by Hartford, then advance the next week to the regional in Washington, D.C., site of the victory over Marquette for a 2013 Final Four berth. This year’s Final Four is at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Here are some elements that jump out to us when looking over the 31 regular season game schedule:
- It’s the earliest start to a season that we could find, with the opener Nov. 6 against Eastern Washington, and the first preseason game Oct. 25. The next earliest start of a season was Nov. 8, 2005 versus Bethune-Cookman in a 2K Sports Hoop Classic game at the Dome. Consider this; the 1992-93 seasons’ first game was played on Dec. 1, 1992.
SU men's basketball will host Duke, Virginia in ACC play | The NewsHouse (thenewshouse.com; Scott and Mazzini)
The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the conference basketball schedule for the upcoming season Thursday.
Syracuse starts the ACC portion of the schedule on the road in the New Year with a matchup versus Notre Dame on Jan. 5. The first conference game in the Carrier Dome is against Clemson on Jan. 9.
The Orange plays Duke twice in the regular season as Jim Boeheim’s squad travels to Durham on Jan. 14. The game in Syracuse is a Saturday night primetime tip-off on Feb. 23. The Blue Devils eliminated SU from the NCAA Tournament this past season in the Sweet 16. Duke brings in the top 2018 recruiting class, including the likes of 5-star prospects R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cam Reddish.
In addition to the home-and-home games with Duke, the Orange also plays Boston College, Pittsburgh and Clemson twice this upcoming season.
Syracuse plays Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Virginia, and Louisville only once this season. Those games are inside the Carrier Dome. Syracuse gets it first look at new Louisville head coach, Chris Mack, on Feb. 20, who takes the helm with the Cardinals after a successful run at Xavier.
As for road games, Syracuse travels to North Carolina, North Carolina State, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech this season for the only matchup against those schools.
Syracuse premiere set for 'Sushi Tushi,' sumo football movie shot at CNY film hub (PS; Herbert)
Another movie filmed at the Central New York film hub is getting a premiere.
"Sushi Tushi, or How Sumo Wrestlers Butted into American Pro Football" will make its big screen debut in Syracuse on Friday, Oct. 19 at the Palace Theatre in Eastwood. The film will be shown at 6 p.m., followed by a Q&A with executive producer and writer Richard Castellane and director Ziad Hamzeh.
The event will also include an 8 p.m. screening of "Irrefutable Proof," the first movie from Castellane and Hamzeh. The psychological thriller won Best Picture and Best Actress (Sheena Colette) at the Beverly Hills Film Festival in 2016; Colette also stars in "Sushi Tushi," which recently won the Audience Choice Award at the Kew Gardens Festival of Cinema in NYC.
Advance tickets are on sale via CNYTix.com for $10; tickets will also be available at the door.
"Sushi Tushi" is a comedy about sumo wrestlers playing football for a fictional pro team called The Portland Lobsters. The coach is willing to try anything after losing 32 games in a row, and recruits 600-pound lineman to protect his Heisman-winning quarterback Caleb O'Rourke (played by Turkish-American actor Chet Gole).
