Syracuse Basketball: Why might the Orange be dangerous in 2018-19? (bustingbrackets/com; Harkins)

Syracuse is returning a ton of talent after reaching the Sweet 16 a year ago and the hope is that the team can build around that heading into this season. There may not be a clear-cut “superstar player” on the roster but that is because of elite balance. The Orange return a superb trio of stars that will lead the roster with a few other key contributors surrounding them. And that does not even include the potential play of incoming freshman.

Jim Boeheim has proven over the years that he is a top-tier head coach and that should be evident this time around as well. The ACC is obviously going to be a gauntlet once again but the ‘Cuse is extremely difficult to gameplan for and they should be more dangerous this year due to the team’s chemistry, experience, and many more factors.

So, as the season draws closer, let’s dive into three major reasons why Syracuse could be in for a huge season.

Duke Basketball: Blue Devils hope to host Isaiah Stewart next weekend (balldurham.com; Giles)

Will five-star 2019 center Isaiah Stewart give the Duke basketball coaches reason to roll out the royal-blue carpet by using his last official visit to see what it’s like to be a Blue Devil?

All recruits can take five official visits during their senior year of high school, but they don’t have to take all of them. Duke basketball fans are crossing their fingers, though, that Isaiah Stewart, who has already taken four visits, uses his fifth.

If he does, they hope it is to Durham next weekend; according to Jake Weingarten of Stock Risers, that “could possibly” be in the works.

Back in August, Duke was the overwhelming favorite to land the five-star center from the 2019 class. At that time, 91 percent of the experts at the 247Sports Crystal Ball saw a future that included Stewart — ranked No. 5 overall and No. 3 at his position on the 247Sports Composite — suiting up next fall in a Blue Devils jersey.

But much has changed in the past couple of months. To start, at the end of August, the 6-foot-9, 245-pound native of Rochester, N.Y., who currently plays for La Lumiere School in Indiana, cut his list to six schools: Duke, Michigan State, Villanova, Syracuse, Washington, and Indiana.

Mike Bianchi: NCAA will never investigate Duke, Kansas basketball with same fervor it once investigated UCF (fltimes.com; Bianchi)

Could you imagine if the UCF Knights, or even the Florida Gators or FSU Seminoles, had star basketball players on their rosters who were named in a federal trial and suspected of accepting illicit cash payouts orchestrated by coaches and funded by shady sneaker-company reps?

NCAA investigators would converge on the state of Florida like the flying monkeys in the Wizard of Oz and do their level best to get to the bottom of the allegations and make an example of the Gators, 'Noles and Knights.

Now a question: Does anybody really think NCAA boss Mark Emmert will show the same sort of fervor in unleashing his flying monkeys to investigate basketball bluebloods and March Madness cash cows like Kansas and Duke?

Let me answer my own question in one word:

Puh-leeze!

Even though Kansas and Duke are knee-deep in the stench and sewage otherwise known as college basketball recruiting, you better believe the NCAA will find a way to hold its nose, cover its eyes and ignore the cesspool the feds have uncloaked. Especially when it comes to Duke, coached by the venerable and legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski, who is considered the NCAA's bastion of ethics and morality. We all know Coach K would never, ever look the other way while his roster is annually being stocked with McDonald's All-Americans who presumably turn down massive payouts from the cheating schools just so they can attend Duke for a couple of semesters.

Possible 2018-19 breakout players for ACC basketball – 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte (espncharlotte.com; Caruso)

Every year, new names come out of nowhere for college basketball and make a big impact. Players that didn’t receive a ton of minutes or didn’t quite develop yet, come in the next season and make a name for themselves. Last year, one of the biggest breakout players in the ACC and in the country was UNC’s Luke Maye. Who could be this year’s breakout player in the conference? Here are just a few names to watch for.

Boston College
Sophomore Steffon Mitchell
Mitchell played in 34 games, starting 27, last year for the Eagles. Averaging 33 minutes of play, Mitchell chipped in 6.4 points and led the team in rebounding with 8.3 rebounds per game. He could see those stats jump, especially if he can develop a consistent jumper from outside. Shooting just 27.5 percent from three, if he can add that outside shot with his versatility, defense, and rebounding, Mitchell could have a solid year for the Eagles.

Clemson
Sophomore Aamir Simms
A 6’7 physical specimen, Simms saw quality minutes early on down low as a forward for the Tigers last year. After averaging 4.0 points per game his freshman season, Simms brings versatility for Clemson. With his added confidence and ability to score the basketball, Simms should perform at a higher level this year.

Duke
Sophomore Alex O’Connell
O’Connell is Duke’s best outside shooter, shooting nearly 49 percent from three last year. He played in 36 games last year, averaging 10.4 minutes per game for the Blue Devils, so he has the experience. With the talent that is coming in for Duke, he may not start but he will be critical when he is on the floor.

Florida State
Sophomore Mfiondu Kabengele
The 6’10 big man averaged 7.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game in limited minutes. Now, he could be more of a focal down low for the Seminoles’ offense this season. He has a nice touch around the rim and is athletic; Kabengele could be their best low-post player this season.

What are the long-term ramifications of the UMBC loss? (streakingthelawn.com; Hobeck)

We know you’re tired of hearing about this, but we’re really just bracing you for the upcoming season. Seven months on, the Virginia Cavaliers’ stunning loss to the UMBC Retrievers in the first round of the NCAA tournament is still difficult to fully comprehend.

Even if the game was a more extreme example of UVA’s inability to make deep postseason runs, one has to wonder what the implications of that loss are in the short- and long-term. From the standpoints of recruiting and the media, we already know a decent amount. Competitively? That will be answered this season.

Recruiting

As of right now, “the shocker of all shockers,” as Jim Nantz called it, appears to have had little impact on the recruiting trail. Weeks after the game, the Hoos landed Casey Morsell out of Washington’s St. John’s College High School and the powerhouse Washington Catholic Athletic Conference for their 2019 class. In August, 2021 guard Carson McCorkle, expected to be a five-star recruit, announced his intent to play for the Cavaliers, rebuffing offers from Florida and NC State among others. On the surface, Bennett’s otherwise superb record of building and maintaining the standard for his program and his elite level of talent development are winning the day.

23. NC State Wolfpack: Kevin Keatts surprised many people last season by leading the Wolfpack to an NCAA tournament appearance — and now he has five transfers in the rotation to make it two in a row. C.J. Bryce, who played for Keatts at UNCW, is the headliner of the group, and returnee Torin Dorn is one of the most underrated players in the ACC. (ESPN)
